That new motor is really cool. However, I think you're concentrating on the wrong problem. A hovercraft needs a segmented skirt. That eliminates all the air underneath from spilling out all in one place.
@stephenfoster2532
@stephenfoster2532 7 месяцев назад
It doesnt have to be segmented. Segmentation just makes it more amenable to rough terrain. Nonsegmented skirts are fine on smoother surfaces.

As a model hovercraft enthusiast, I really like this project. But essential for a hovercraft is a well designed skirt, and that is what I'm missing.
@FlyMIfYouGotM
@FlyMIfYouGotM 7 месяцев назад
💯 I have a good friend who has spent several years designing and building a hovercraf that is about this size. The skirt was also a big issue for him. He uses a 25hp Kohler gas engine that is shaft coupled to 3 hydraulic pumps that feed 3 hydraulic motors. He has had it on the lake this summer and verified speeds over water of at least 25mph. I can post pictures and get info on the skirt if interested.

My number 1 observation there is that you need a shrapnel shield around that fan. That scares the crap out of me - breakage or FOD could become lethal to anyone close to the vehicle.

@@bartsshorts meh... A lifetime around aircraft and engineering (military and commercial tells me otherwise). After seeing a low velocity bird ingestion fly into a turbo fan and get thrown through both the wall of the engine and the fuselage, my respect for the risks around engines and really fast spinny sharp things is right up there. Having the humans in the plane of the props is hugely risky.

Not only is your skirt limiting performance it takes away from the amazing paint job. I would suggest making your own skirt in a similar method to the guy who made the realistic hovering Halo Ghost. He used a transparent material and copied an existing skirt design. The result is a functional skirt that looks like the craft is floating half a foot to a foot off of the ground.

The sound of those turbines spooling really is awesome. I hope the left and right nacelles will have variable pitch turbines, for differential, and reverse thrust capability. Same for the high turbine. Wouldn't hurt to have a few mini-thrusters in the nose, and tail for yaw control, when not being thrust fore/aft. Thanks for sharing this.

If you really want to create the illusion of flying you will need to install a support ring around the craft and fit downward angled (45o) mirrors, like they did in the film. The segmented skirt sections were usually fitted at the front and rear to reduce the risk of tearing the skirt on a rock etc. I was lucky enough to travel on an SRN4 hovercraft in the 70s, it carried 55 cars and 300 passengers at up to 85mph! across the English channel, it was a huge awesome machine!

The tiny hovercraft don't have the variable ground issue to overcome so your large vehicle skirt has to make up for gaps around the edges if you aren't going to use it on an indoor basketball court.

2:05 as cool as this technique is, I think what would make this more realistic, and less costly on tape, is make the metal texture the base paint below the final color, use small strips and cut outs of tape to place them in a chipped pattern, Paint it with the final color, then pull off the tape. Now it really looks like it's chipped paint with the chipped areas being lower than the outer paint.

Without a segmented skirt, it will only work on smooth ground. You are also wasting lift thrust. You need to add a reverse venturi so that you don't have negative pressure escaping through the fans. It must compress the air to lift. The skirt is also too small. I guess you can get around it by throwing a ton of power at it. With A proper lift fan and venturi, you would only need one small fan to lift both of you. You have too much blowback with the props just blowing straight down and no way to compress the air. MORE POWER I GUESS, lol.
