We are pretty sure that this was the last train across the Western Maryland's Keystone bridge. It was taken out of service, and is now a bike trail. It was aproaching evening, and thats why the video is on the dark side. CSX 5757 and C&O 6850 goes down to pick up a cut of loaded hoppers at the mine. It returns, and goes up the connection toward the top of the grade near the summit of Sand Patch. Video was taken June 14, 1990. Thanks for watching. Jackmp294...

CSX was using this remaining section of track from the shot location to west end of Meyersdale, where there was a branch north from the WM at the east end of the Salisbury Viaduct to the Blue Lick mine complex. This was one of only two sections left intact west of Frostburg to service mines after the Connellsville sub abandonment. The other one was at Rockwood. All other sections had track removed by 1978 except Bowest yard itself where most tracks were left down until after 2000.

In case anyone is wondering, when the Western Maryland was absorbed into the Chessie System and abandoned the majority of the line that paralleled the B&O, Chessie left several sections of the railroad intact, such as the section from Cumberland to Frostburg. An occasional train would go to different customers that serviced the railroad. This particular one was the Blue Lick Industrial Track. It left the B&O near the Glade City Road crossing on a former Western Maryland transfer track, and would reach the old WM mainline near the Flaugherty Creek bridge that can be seen from Glade City Road on the approach to Keystone Crossing. It crossed the Keystone Viaduct, passed the Meyersdale WM station, and left the WM main near the Salisbury Viaduct on a former WM branch line to service the Blue Lick Mine. That was why it was called the Blue Lick Industrial Track. It outlasted other movements on the old WM line, and was abandoned in 1993. Go watch the Pentrex video or DVD about Sand Patch Grade from 1989 to see the full movement in action on another coal train movement to the Blue Lick Mine.

I railfanned this same train too (Keystone VIaduct and up the Bluelick track) both directions this same day. However CSX did run more train the following year in 1991, and that was the end of it.

I miss the Western Maryland days as well as the original Chessie System paint scheme, I grew up in York Pennsylvania in which was serviced by the late Western Maryland and Cheese! R.I.P.

Things would be very different today if the WM was merged into the N&W, the way it probably should have been.

@ba82paulus Good deal! Thanks for the info on 1991. We knew the end was very near. I think this clip he was coming out with a cut , and going back light for another string. Thanks for watching...

Hard to believe that was once the WM's mainline to Connellsville. Had the WM gone to the N&W instead of Chessie, the way it should have, the line would probably still be in use today by NS.

The line to Connellsville was killed off by the Flood of 1972, long before CSX and Chessie got into the act. I love the WM, and got a chance to see much of the old lines in the 1976-86 period. When "heavy" traffic dropped in the Pittsburgh area due to mill closures etc, well- the WM was doomed. Add to that mines playing out and the WM had no long term survival chance.

It's really a shame that when WM was merged into the Chessie System they eliminated paralleling lines! But apparently this section was one of the last to be eliminated. I've passed beneath this viaduct so many times but never got to see a train! Do you, by any chance, have anything shot at onetime Bowest Jct in Ohiopyle? One of my favorite spots in western PA! I've got vid but no train-and the connector was already long gone.

IS the line gone now, or just used by another company? What state and area is this located in?

The WM line is mostly now a trail. The B&O line still exists today but the 3rd main track that was from Folly to somewhere around Meyersdale is gone. It is one of CSX'es most important lines.

@DJMightyRaton Yes the line is gone, and was the Western Maryland Railway, It is now a bike trail. It is in southern Pennsylvania, about 5 miles east of Meyersdale, PA. Thanks for watching. Jackmp294...
