its something i love about houses character he is cold and calculating and sees things in black and while without letting emotions get in the way every year thousands of people suffer painfull and slow deaths because dr's and protestors think its too inhumane to kill someone its inhumane to let them take there own live yet its humane to allow them to suffer in pain and agony so they can enjoy those final few monthes or years of there life thats so precious because they have so much to live for so many things left to expirance there first fall where they cant get up realising they cant get in and out of the tub and need someone to lift them out not making it to the bathroom in time and having to wear a diaper and soil yourself which of course you cant change so now you have to suffer the indignity of being changed combined with the crushing guilt and shame of subjecting someone to having to do that for you the day when you find you cant even stand on your own your left laying in your bed staring at 4 walls nothing to do nothing to think of but the pain people coming to visit you isnt the joy it once was because you see it in there eyes you see the look of sadness the fear in there eyes of loosing you you sense how they treat you different now your not there loved one the way you once was they dont joke with you how they used to for fear of upsetting you they handle you like your made of china scared to even hug you no your dying you know that they know that and it just crushes you but hey its inhumane to let someone fall asleep and stop there heart subjecting them to at most 30 minutes of pain much more humane to extend there suffering its admirable that house cuts through the crap and the feelings and the kind words and gets direct to the point your dying you wont survive your move oh and final thought most countrys allow a person to choose to end there life they just have to refuse medical attention and refuse food and water it takes 8-14 days to die from starvation and dehydration and is the most aggonizing 8 days imaginable and by refusing medical aid they must do this without pain medication house is perhaps the most human person allive

Me too.... I started crying. The things we are willing to go through for the ones we love can be a true sign of our humanity.

He missed most of his son's life and had no real clue what kind of person his son was other than the knowledge that he was a guilt-ridden drunk. He lost his wife and more than a decade of his life trying to fix a mistake his son made, and despite all of that, he was willing to suffer and give up everything to save a person he barely even knows just because he was the kid's father. There have been fathers on this show that wouldn't even give blood to save their son's life, and this made decided to trade his knowing he won't even get the chance to say goodbye. This episode straight fucked me up.

I got tears when he yelled "I failed to keep my family safe! I failed to save my wife! Now I have to watch my son as he-..."

You'd have to be a father to really understand this. If my daughter needed a heart, I'd be ok if doctors cut it out of my chest alive and with no medicine to ease the pain. Just as long as she gets it.

He knew his life was over anyway and even if the drugs kept me awake until his end what’s the point. Giving up his life so his son could have his heart gave his son a chance at a full life. Sacrifice is the most human thing.

Frankly, the most honest dialogue I can think of. What can he say; his son's "clumsiness" did factually cause the fire that put the dad into a PVS, and killed his mother. It's NOT your fault would mean his father spent his last moments thinking about what caused the accident. I forgive you would pretty much have the same effect. I love you unconditionally, would probably saddle his kid with an unbelievable weight of guilt. House's "You were right" actually covers the FACTS. The tray WAS too heavy for him. He was just a kid. He is sorry. The "You were Right; you did the right thing." comment covers everything. And it will baffle the kid, shifting his mind from the incredible guilt he may have felt over his father giving up his life for his son. Brilliant House episode. We learn WHY House has to be the guy with the answers that NOBODY else could come up with. Because no matter how he dressed, how he acted, what his station in life is, how messed up his personal life is, people will STOP and LISTEN to what he has to say (medically) because THEY HAVE TO!

I think what House did was right in two ways, first of all he tells the son a cryptic "you were right, you did the right thing" which given the son doesn't know know what that means is perfect, because he can take it and believe it means whatever he needs to, which will make him feel better. Secondly in some way it kinda was what the father would have said if he could think of it, the father wanted to say something that would make things better and make his son feel better, but he just didn't know what those words might be, so House just helped the father along.

I think it's cause the kid seemingly wanted a message from his dad so bad, that it might have hurt that his dad didn't have any final words for him. Not even a I love you or anything. I know that'd sting if my dad didn't say anything to me if he knew he was gonna die. Imagine most people would feel pretty shitty if their dad didn't have any final words for them. Even House. Which is why House passed on what he wanted his father to say to him to the son.

The best way to reply would've been either "Just... tell him I love him" or, even better, "He gave you his heart. I think that WAS the message."

I think the heart donation says I love u pretty well. But House did the right thing.

The kid probably lived his life as an guilt ridden empty husk, filling himself up with alcohol, constantly telling himself "I killed my own mother and hospitalized my father, how could I do such a thing.." "You did the right thing" - Dad. In my mind it's kinda fucked up.

There isn't anything a good father wouldn't do for his children. It's how we're wired.

I hated his character at the beginning. He basically acted like an ass and basically used House and Wilson. I'll be damned if he didn't fully redeem himself. The end was just heartbreaking. I've never respected a character more on this show than this father

As an 18 year old dad, the moment I heard my baby boy take his first breath in then let his first cry out, I felt something like my soul literally melting inside my chest...i knew at that moment I would defend him with my life or die in his place

@@sleepynoodles6425 well he was going to go into coma again, not die. He would have needed to essentially sign an agreement to be euthanized rather than supported in coma. And euthanasia isn't legal in the US. If he had to be on life support, he could likely have signed an agreement to not be put on life support/a DNR (do not resuscitate), but he was in good health despite the coma, so didn't need life support so that wasn't an option either.

And the look she gives at the end to me it says "i am so glad i don't have to live with this heavy decision like House does"

Doctors help people die pretty often, I think. We just don't get to hear about it much because it is (wrongly) against the law in a lot of places.

My grandmother did that. All her friends were gone and she missed her husband. So she was able to persuade us to leave, told the doctors to do nothing and then pulled all her wires and tubes out...she was a strong little lady.

It’s part of the reason why assisted suicide is so controversial. There are states where if your illness is deemed terminal by 3 different doctors you are allowed to be prescribed some drugs that will end your life in a peaceful manner by those doctors, that way you go out on your own terms. It is what my uncle did.

I noticed it, but was wondering why. I even went back a few seconds to make sure I saw him take it. I was also wondering why he called the guy House, but when it slipped him the money it all clicked into place. Wilson can now produce one or more witnesses that would say House was in the casino with him at the time of the guy's death.

It says a lot about Wilson's character and his relationship with House that he didn't even need to be asked, or to know what he was giving House an alibi for (though I'm sure he suspected).

I wouldn't blame him if he left House. Everyone has their breaking point and Wilson is not willing to break his ethical code. He may be an accomplice, but will never step on House's shoes. It's too much for him. Almost everytime when something big happen, their friendship is tested, but at some point, it breaks... and repairing that is almost impossible.

There's actually a theory I heard that the show isn't about House at all - Wilson is the main character, it's just told from House's point of view.

This show was an absolute masterpiece and it's so disappointing when people miss some of the biggest parts. They intentionally showed the sandwich not being eaten FOR A REASON. The sandwich was EVEN IN THE CENTER OF THE SHOT, for like a whole 2 seconds so obviously they were trying to MAKE YOU REALIZE HE DIDN'T EAT THE SANDWICH. When you realize that they forced you to notice the sandwich, you then think critically as to why. I quickly realized that at the start of this episode, when this patient was woken up and being told the news. If you watch and analyze when Cuddy tells him that his son could be dying too. He AVOIDS eye contact with CUDDY by closing his eye and clenching his jaw (almost like he's trying to deal with the bad news but can't so he ignores them) then immediately jumps to HOUSES eyes bringing up a topic that OBVIOUSLY has nothing to do with the importance of his DYING SON. The directors were trying to call to attention the lack of understanding we all have of HOW PEOPLE DEAL WITH TRAUMA. This mans reaction, along with MANY MANY other men, was to have an escape, AKA (the bar, the pub, etc.) The whole point was that, while when he first woke up he REALLY DID want a steak, after he got hit the the HORRIBLE NEWS of (kid dying, and he's only going to be alive for a day anyways) he had no time to deal with that trauma, so his immediate reaction was to escape to a safe place where he can deal with those feelings. That brings us to where they end up, with the exact kind of Sandwich he wanted and probably could've eaten since he was still more than likely starving, but he didn't. You know why? It's because the REAL issue was finally coming to light, now that he felt he was in a place comfortable enough to let it show. Also just like the Father is okay with enduring pain for his son, his father is probably also okay with forcing himself to starve (by not eating a sandwich he would probably love to it) it shows a strong sense of moral priority, where the father understands the importance of his sons death, and is valuing that over the momentary pleasure of satiating his hunger. That shows because when he could be eating a perfectly good sandwich, he chooses not to and instead opens up about how much he loves his family. Literally the directors did an incredible job with this episode and it might be on of the best episodes of House to date. Stinks though, because in a cinematography sense, this was one of the MOST BLATANT puzzles they INTENTIONALLY tried to force us all to solve. Apparently some people just like to watch House in the background and not really analyze it, which is hilariously contradictory.

That's a reasonable understanding you have. When I was a kid, my dad got sick on a friday and died the next night...out of the blue. I couldn't be there bc I was too young. Besides, he was intubated and could not speak. I'm not sure there are words for that time or moment, from him to me. But I wonder.

House's wanting his dad to tell him he did the right thing (but still never hearing those words) pretty much sums up the whole show and his character. He struggles mightily the find the right answers, and will do pretty much anything if he believes it's the right thing, even if others don't agree. He yearns for that approval but has had to learn the hard lesson of living without it. His off-putting manner, what seems gruff and cold, is of course the mechanism he uses to live with that painful dichotomy.

An utilitarian philosophy has it's flaws, but luckily this is one such show that more often than not reveals a decent means to an end approach.

Bmanritchie, in my opinion, I think house is an optimistic pessimist. In that he sees and recognizes all the sadness, evil and heartbreaking things that take place in the world but he still tries to use what he knows to help people even if it makes him appear as an amoral jackass to those around him.

In real life, there are machines used to help prevent muscle atrophy, called sequential compression devices (SCD's). Used in patient that are bed bound and help the muscles to simulate walking, thus preventing atrophy

I can hear your pain and desperation in your words and I am familiar with that level of torment, frustration and anger at my body. It holds us both hostage and the misery both physical and mental is off the scale. See if you can get a referral to a multidisciplinary pain clinic. I have had laser nerve surgery to burn the nerves that carry the message to the brain to think Pain. It’s not an easy procedure but after recovery it provides a great deal of relief. It’s done by a neurologist and radiologist who are guided by scans of my spine as I lay face down under the radiation instrument. It has to be done about every 9 months for me. At the pain clinic I was also prescribed pain and muscle relaxants and a physiotherapist taught me specific exercises to help with the pain. A psychologist helps me with relaxation techniques so when my back, and legs go into spasm, I can relax enough to not make it worse. Please seek out help from a multidisciplinary pain clinic or sports pain clinic. I wish you the best, and you are so in my thoughts.

As doctors, we do NOT end the lives of fully conscious living people, pure and simple. Not for anything, even a life-saving heart transplant. In fact, medical ethics instantly considers alive, fully conscious people who ask that their lives be taken on the spot for whatever reason, as medically incompetent. Realise that the father should not have been awake in the first place. Yes, it's a TV show, but one that portrays a lot of realism in medicine, so you can't ask for too much.
