It’s amazing that I’m only 20 years old and Canada feels like a completely different place from what it was even 5 years ago. Im too young to be nostalgic for old Canada yet here we are.
You absorb too much right wing media/propaganda....the world isnt just fine. Its progressing and getting better all the time. Dont let them ROB you of your optimism.
You have no idea, my boy. I was in Kingston where Don coached for my first 13 years. We had the ice storm in the 90s that shut everything down. No hot water no lights no hot food for two weeks and no one could drive anywhere. We all were a community we all helped eachother we all played outside and helped the old people and helped the other kids. I want you to imagine if that happened today. Not one person would go outside to help anyone. There is no sense of community left in Western America and it has been strictly by design.
@@tomhanks2863 I don't know if NOBODY would help. But things are definitely different now. The Government is driving a wedge between us trying to destroy the Middle class. Rich or Poor is the way they want it. In 10 years home ownership for the middle class will be a thing of the past. This generation have their parents to help, the next generation will not.
His passion for our country and the war heroes that did the most for us just to live a normal life, ended his career that he loved so much. Thank you for everything Don, the sport to us younger guys will never be the same without you.
No...i applaud his support of veterans and people of service. It was his racist remarks that got him fired and he made just as shitty remarks in the past that should have had him fired YEARS ago.
My wife and i often visit the Canadian graves in the Netherlands, its about the respect and the love for every fallen soldier that gave the biggest thing you can give.
Thank you for your love and respect. My Grandfather was a Canadian WW2 veteran, I travelled with him in 2005 to Europe, we toured all over the Netherlands and went to many places he helped liberate. The people were great over there and treated us like family. My Grandfather was 17 when he joined in 1943 and it was his nightmare till he passed! His best friend, they joined together, is buried in a Canadian War Cemetery in Holland.
Thing is, you're talking about entitled ungrateful immigrants.....dont get me wrong, I know there's good new immigrants who will buy a poppy, but many are here to exploit our system....they don't give a shit about our soldiers or canada. It is what it is
As a Canadian we cannot forget that Canadian veterans didn't win freedom for anyone. The UK and US will always do all the real work while we reap too much credit as an insignificant nation.
I saw this episode and when Don talked about this, I did not even think of anyone else, but I thought to myself I could do more, I can't believe that a person in our country can get fired for supporting our troops and the memory of those that lost their lives for our country. I liked Coach's corner, but I think it is terrible that we no longer have the national voice that recognizes the people that defend our country. Hey Don, I will have a poppy every year because of the importance of the people that sacrifice for us, you made us aware of the sacrifice that was made! I heard you...
You're not wrong. O e of the most disappointing things was when the Legion threw Don under the bus by not standing up for him. Virtue signaling. After all Don did for the Legjon over the last 4 or 5 decades, he deserved better.
Don was due for retirement anyway. No loss to us because he is still with us and can and should write a few books about his knowledge a nd experiences. I have been an avid NHL hockey fan here in western Canada since the late 1950s when I was a child actively watching games on CBC TV with my family.
I have a Immigrant parents . There is absolutely nothing wrong with what Cherry said. Every cultures all say "us , our people " What's wrong with you people?? I 100% agree . We live in this beautiful country of Canada and we should all pay respect to veterans who all sacrificed for us to live here.
Absolutely. What's ironic to is he said "you people" and some idiots took it as racist. They're the racist ones because they have a specific demographic that they assumed he was offending lol
Your take so conveniently ignores the majority of what he said. It's not that he referred to them as "you people" It's that he 1) assumes the people downtown not wearing poppies were immigrants (hmm, I wonder why? Because they weren't white?) 2) He says "you people come to this country, you love our milk and honey" etc... "you should wear a poppy) Now, what the fuck does any of this have to do with hockey? That's why he got fired. Cause as much as I loved his hockey talk, I didn't give a shit about his stupid, racist, ignorant perspectives on what a "real Canadian" is.
whats wrong with 'you people'? This isnt complicated...stop and think for just a few seconds and tell me what you think he means when he says 'you people'. actually think about it. Hint : He is not referring to people in general who aren't buying a poppy. He is speaking of very specific people...who do you think that might be? Hint 2 : He actually gives you the answer if you go back and watch it again. Now...i want to be very clear in that i do not think Don is a racist. I think he is a brain addled old man who was never the brightest bulb to begin with and he is from another generation and his ideas on culture and community are antiquated. It was time for him to go because his old brain had serious problems finishing thoughts and sentences which is clearly evident in this video. He still has a weekly podcast if you want to hear him and i actually listen every week.
And we should all have a choice on how we like to express our gratitude or not. Putting a cheap fake flower on your coat or sun visor for a few weeks doesn't make you more patriotic or appreciative than someone who doesn't. That's what's great about the country, and the people who fought were fighting so we have choices.
@@krimpoo if the words “you people “ are hurtful I think you need to grow some thicker skin, he also called the people who buy poppies “you people” was that racist too? immigrants that come here can be any race even white, just like white ppl aren’t the only ones who buy poppies, don was referring to anyone immigrant or Canadian born who comes/lives here, enjoys the freedom and entitlement but doesn’t pay respect to how this country became so great and the young men who died for our privilege and freedom If the words you people are so offensive maybe they should be removed from the English language

Well, this was a difficult situation because you have to be quick to respond to his comment. But at the same time I don’t blame Ron for wanting to apologize because he values his job. It’s heartbreaking to see Don cherry being fired from it but at the same time he shouldn’t if targeted people like that. You can’t be making comments like that. Ron sold Don out. CBC, became way too politically correct. Don meant what he said only to emphasize to everyone in Canada that it’s an honour and a privilege to live here. The least we can do is buy a poppy in support of all who have served, and payed the ultimate price for all of us to be free.
You can't treat none of your family members like did to his partner.. All these years he's been a massive tool bag to him on Hockey night in Canada.. Don't expect anyone outside of blood to have your back..
Wearing a poppy on November 11th is merely symbolic. My dad fought during WW2 in France, Belgium and Holland as an heroic member of the Calgary Highlanders and thankfully he survived until his death at the age of 80 years old in early 2001. I was born in Ottawa and I do not need a poppy to pay respects to my dad's military legacy because I lived it with him.
If only our WWI and II veterans could see the "papers, please" new normalers wearing poppies these days. They have no right to wear it nor to be solemn. Those veterans didn't fight and die for this. Imagine telling them after arriving back in the Dominion, "Please respect that you are treading on unceded lands."
He used remembrance day to launch an attack on immigrants (some of which have served in the military). Remembrance day was originally supposed to be about remembering the poor kids that got gassed in the tenches in ww1 and then were treated like garbage when they came home. It was the idea to never let something like that happen again. This is a lesson completely lost on Don Cherry when he called for war in 2003 with Iraq. *Don Cherry never served in the military himself

Asking those born in Canada and those immigrating in to respect the Canadian way of life while reaping the benefits...not one thing wrong with that sentiment. Good for you Don!
His message targeted immigrants and refugees! It was completely disrespectful. Many refugees arrive here from war-torn countries barely able to speak English and have no idea what a poppy is. He views immigrants as parasites.
God forbid a man have a opinion in 2021. We are literally swelling with immigration. The same countries immigrating to Canada would not willingly become the minority in their own countries. @@hotcoffeegaming3397 110% agree. Diversity is a great thing. My parents immigrated from Europe back in the 50's. They assimilated nicely into Canadian society and contributed to the local community. The thing is, is diversity needs to happen naturally and not be forced. Many big businesses hire foreign temporary workers from 3rd world countries because it IS cheap labour. They have trouble hiring local workers because those very workers cannot afford low-paying jobs due to the cost of living in big cities like Toronto and Vancouver. It's not about diversity. A company like Telus employs customer service reps and technician support workers based mostly India instead of hiring and training local employees. Now, there are Indian people who have graciously assimilated into Canada and adapted to Canadian customs. However, there is way too many foreign workers and foreign university students from the same 3rd world nations. He told me of how his best friend fought beside him in trenches and on the way home across Canada, the legions refused his best friend alcohol at their stops, and he was in uniform. They refused him because he was a native. My gramps took a stand against the legion after that, and I heard his story after asking him why he never attended legion events. There is a degree of blind nationalism in Don that I can’t share. For example, he once said he’s a “my country right or wrong kind of person, and I think that’s far too simplistic a way of looking at the world. But Don is from another era, he’s absolutely harmless, he’s not a hate monger. When people reach a certain age the chances of them becoming even remotely PC are non-existent. The problem with a lot of the media today and the younger generation is they make no attempt to understand people of that era. They simply see them as irredeemable and worthy of cancellation. The woke crowd make life thoroughly unfun. In the end their movement is going to self-destroy itself. It’s unsustainable. When everything a person says gets analyzed for content or context, or when every tv show or movie has to make sure and be inclusive of everyone or else face the PC police, when the often unavoidable unfairness of life can’t be accepted or comprehended, the people within that society will inevitably suffocate themselves.
Cherry and Trump, et al: "from another era" -- misunderstood, absolutely harmless, not hate mongers. Right... Grumpy gramps on the front porch in his rocking chair, absolutely harmless -- old demagogues with national platforms from which to spew anachronistic racist venom, anything but harmless. Especially for "all you kids out there."
@@James-zw6wb The IQ enables people to distinguish between free speech and racism. All you americans are racists, only the ones like you say they aren't but that doesn't automatically mean they are not. Trump may seem a racist but my IQ allows me to know he is not.
He honors the veterans and pays his respects to the young hockey players that have passed on and yet he is a bad guy for telling the truth. Miss you Cherry 🇨🇦
We as hockey fans, we all need to start an internet petition for the CDC to give Don Cherry his job back. He is a coaching legend and a patriot. To fire him is a blatant insult to the world of hockey. As long as people are being stupid, why not fire Karen Newman for singing the National Anthem at every Wings game ?
Don is not wrong. When this happend it was a chance for all of us to wake up to the fact that we wer full out speeding toward a socialist society full of half truths and self entitled cancel culture. With an entire generation that wants it all and knows it all without ever having anything to really actually b*tch about or doing much to earn it. To be Canadian is a privilege not a right. My wife’s family is from the South Pacific her father being first generation . I have never met anyone with more pride and sense of accomplishment and the feeling of acceptance true happiness just because he had finally been given citizenship. I quote “that was one of the best days of my life, just knowing I never would have to go back.” His story would make any person tear up. Most Canadians have no clue as to how truly great they actually have it. Just being born here sets you ahead in many ways that other countries could never do for their citizens
You are correct, but CBC should of gave him a chance to own up to it and apologize. Anyone else would have been given that opportunity, that is why Maclean should of fought for and he didn’t. CBC had an underlying agenda all the way. Ron Maclean would have been nothing without Cherry. He should of stood up like a real man. CBC is the biggest culprit here, they have crushed the reputations of many people with a lot of news not based on fact. I just cancelled my cable because of all the fake news, but I cancelled more for the fact of how they are promoting gambling that will ruin many households in Canada. They even advertise the odds, REALLY. Don’t think for a minute they care about anyone. I will get my hockey updates on RU-vid. P.S. when was the last time you saw a beer commercial?
@@keyanuka 100% I totally agree with cbc having an agenda from the on set. They wanted Don gone for a long time and as I remember the public demand was the only reason they kept him. They certainly captured their opportunity and spun it into the narrative that suited them. Don should be memorialized for his contributions to not only hockey but Canadian culture in general. To me regardless of who’s right who’s wrong , I respect anyone for telling it how it is rather then being sneaky and saying one thing to the public and another in private or hidden behind internet anonymity. Don Cherry always, day in day out always told it how it is and never hid behind anyone or anything. I’ll always love the man for that! While I’m going on here I’ll say this too. lol. The liberals need to go have to go or we will all have to Pusey foot around every issue and never really get anything done. That’s as simple as I can put it.
Here we are a couple of years after all the fuss. What Don stood for and stands for all Canadians should be standing for with him. Having a grand father and several uncles fight in WWll and a father who spent 25 years in the Canadian Armed Forces we were raised to be respectful of all veterans and to remember the sacrifices made. Don was and is right, all Canadians should buy and wear a poppy. We have veterans to thank for the freedoms and way of life we have today.
I feel you on that regard but when you mention "milk and honey", it takes the whole concept of the poppy out the window. Cherry was indirectly mentioning immigrants and this is the end result.
@@SenorAspie And?.. Hey, I have an idea. I'm not in Canada, but why doesn't Canada just treat these immigrants that you mention, just like Canadians get treated in the immigrant's home country?. Oh wait.. there is likely a reason that they left their home country to come to Canada.. Could it be because of the "milk and honey" that you mention?.. Or is it because they get treated worse in Canada?. If we treated people the same way in our Country, that we would get treated in their's, they would not be here. Period.
It was a poor choice of words, and he had a opportunity to clarify but didnt. Instead of "you people come here" he should have said "Canadians" he singled out immigrants while there are many Canadians who really dont gaf about the poppy of history of this country.
After Peter Mansbridge retired, the canceling of Don Cherry was officially the death of the CBC of the old days. A CBC that was still a respectable institution that represented Canadian values and patriotism.
he's right though. All those young Canadians died for freedom. Canada is getting 500,000 immigrants a year and they get freedom and expenses paid and subsidies. but really it's because we help Britain and the Monarchy. So if anything Queen Elizabeth should have called CBC and told them to keep Don Cherry.🍒
@@ryans413 the thing is, they decide what they can roll with and what they cant roll with. Even though, Don did nothing wrong. We really ought to start cancelling perverted leftist tv shows.
@@krimpoo Once the ways of that era are completely forgotten you will be overrun , your generation for the most part is weak and gutless .But hey maybe you can hide behind my children and grandchildren when that time comes .
I went to Richmond, British Columbia a week prior to Remembrance Day. Me and another person were the only ones that wore a poppy. So love him or hate him, this is about our country.
I'm watching this years later and I still fail to understand why he was let go. We all know Don speaks from the heart and his passion for the subject got the better of him at that moment. For that passion he pays the price of being out cast by an overly sensitive and vocal group of people whom I'm not even sure watched the show on a regular basis. I didn't always agree with what Don was saying or how he said it, I was even myself a bit insulted at times and yet I respected that it was his point of view and I don't always have to agree.
Cherry was removed because he hijacked Remembrance Day to launch an attack on immigrants. He’s a guy who’s never served but likes to dress up like a veteran in a Legion blazer. More people should wear poppies and remember the sacrifices of veterans, yes. But it’s just not true to claim (as he did) that visible minorities are less likely than white people to wear a poppy. The biggest drop-off in poppy wearing is generational - young Canadians of all races think that wearing a poppy is a marker of being a xenophobic redneck, and Cherry was just reinforcing that. I agree with the people who say Ron Maclean was weak- he should have called out Cherry’s racist bs live on air instead of waiting until the next day like he did.
5:44 he said something like "you people" but he was only talking about dickheads that dont support our nations history and wont wear poppies for remembrance day. They just "cancelled" him cuz hes old fashioned. My friend and i were watching, and as soon as he said it we both knew it was over.
He was let go by pressure from the private company Sportsnet. They caved to the pressure, when CBC had Coach's Corner, Don was untouchable. CBC always protected Don's freedom of speech. As you know if ya watched Coach's Corner over the years, he's said worse things.
Yup this is so true. People got to cry cuz they got their feeling hurt. If I were CBC I would prevent these things from happening by simply telling who ever works at intermissions to stick to hockey.
@@tomshea8382 Yeah. When he 1st started he was talking about hockey & he knew a lot of things about it. Also when he talks on his yourube channel he is just talking about hockey & he's more calm so he knows what he's saying.
Hard to believe when you think about it, how Don Cherry's famous rant (which resulted in his firing from CBC) all started with news about the death of two young kids who went way too soon. That's probably the trigger which sent him off. It's a difficult thing to talk about on air, and it led to negative energy in the end. I'll miss him. Ron McLean sucks and is a puppet. The only thing I can say is that Cherry should have chosen better words in that situation, but this is a difficult life. You go on one passionate rant, and it could end up being inconsistent with the values of the company you work for, and then you're Toast. There's little forgiveness these days, regardless of the amount of value people have provided a company with leading up to a conflict. I know in my heart that Don Cherry is a much better person that what his comments would have you believe, and I loved tuning in to Coach's corner from 2003-2019. Team Cherry all the way.
After all these years still standing with ya Don, all he wanted was for people to respect the fallen and vets that gave their lives hearts and souls for this country so we can all have a better enjoyable life #LONGLIVETHELEGEND
You know I miss this guy. He was not always right, he was a little rough around the edges , yet he told it straight. God bless Mr Donald S Cherry. Love ya
"Free speech for all" would include CBC and their freedom to not have his views expressed on their network, no? Or does that suddenly not fit your narrative?
