Honestly I think Last Epoch is a great example of what I call "Depth through simplicity." The game has really great build variety because the systems surrounding your character are simple and easy to understand. Affixes and ability scaling are simple and clearly explained. There's nothing like "deal 5% more damage to a stunned enemy, but only if it's a lunar eclipse on Friday the 13th during a year ending in an even number." If a skill has the scaling tags int, fire, spell, AoE, those are the stats I'm looking for. Grim Dawn is my favorite ARPG out there, for a multitude of reasons. PoE is a close second, but I honestly sometimes get a little burnt out on all the brain power it takes to put a build together. Sometimes I just want to turn my brain off, kill things, and get better loot, and I want to do it in new and interesting ways. Last Epoch fills that niche where most things are simple enough that they just work.

Yeah, I'm a relatively casual player (though for sure have put hundreds of hours into various ARPGs and almost souly play Hardcore after getting my bearings in them) but love the fact it feels I can just make a build work. Especially after a little tweaking. I just started a few days ago and really loving it (just started monoliths).

I think the circle of fortune is something I would love from POE. It doesn't disable party play, but simply replaces the auction house/trading with more opportunities to get the gear you want on your own. Last 2 leagues I've played SSF and I love so much about it more than I do trade, but wish there were some alternatives to replace trading, rather than SSF being only a handicap.

issue with PoE is not that it's a lot more complex. I love what you described for end game and complexity at the top level definitely appeals to many people I think. PoE has the issue that it is complex out of the gate, and also just punishes people for not having played for the last 10 years. I love ARPGs. I hear praises of PoE all over. I have attempted to give it a fair try many times. It is just like Yu Gi Oh!. The introduction is so painful you get disillusioned really fast before you can even see what is fun about the game

i think for 1.0 this is probably the best ARPG at that version of the game. its now on them to keep expanding and fix some small issues to then compete with likes of PoE and PoE2 which well its a bit unfair to compare to cause they both have 10+ years of experience in their development(and we havnt seen how big poe2's endgame will be on launch yet) LE has a great foundation though so you can only hope the success money wise helps them keep building.

1000% is a pretty bold claim. Easier does not mean better. The fun in SSF PoE is in the mastery of its complex mechanics. There are no gifts in PoE, only hard-fought victories, and that is a very satisfying experience

@@dirtydard4870 I’m talking about your ability to craft and target-farm gear in LE. PoE is a gambling simulator and overall has objectively the worst SSF experience. Depends on perspective. I like poe ssf because item drops are very exciting. If you get just the right item, your entire gameplay can feel so much better. In last epoch, those items drop like candy, and there are heaps of alternatives or other ways to get the build going. So the excitement for individual items is nowhere near as much. Even the best 4LP unique doesn't come close to a mageblood, it might be rarer but it doesn't have that same excitement factor because all you're gaining is some stats. It doesn't change gameplay enough. The flip side is that in PoE if you hyper focus on a single item, you can burn out. It may never drop. PoE has extremely large variance for item drops. Last epoch makes it very easy to drop what you want as there are deterministic ways to focus all item types both unique and exalted.

Crafting in poe is t crafting, it’s more comparable to gambling on a slot machine, it’s the worst crafting system in any aRPG, to the point where most people just craft the most deterministic items you can make and that’s just bad design when everyone is just either crafting the same things or just mirroring other peoples items.
@user-xy1ru4zy2t
@user-xy1ru4zy2t 2 месяца назад
"everyone is just mirroring other peoples items" Are you deliberately saying stupid things? Is this trolling? everyone? just mirroring? This is a super endgame opportunity for the 0.001% of players. Poe has the best crafting system. Poe has both deterministic crafting (bench crafts) and random crafting (for items above average strength). And even these random crafts are to some extent controlled by an experienced player. Simple deterministic crafting is boring. He doesn't give emotions. Just like deterministic loot. The game should have a balance of random and guaranteed. Poe does this very well.
@Rawlingm
@Rawlingm 2 месяца назад
@@user-xy1ru4zy2t lol the .001% of players mirroring items? Are you trolling? Last league, where there wasn’t wisp farming belton, a non tft mirror service guy, had made over 450 mirror services for his bow. Captainlance, another non tft mirror service guy, had made over 100 mirrored copies of both his shield and helm each for his trickster. This doesn’t even come close to how many people used the mirrored wand for str stackers and the int stackers. You are living under a rock if you don’t know at least 10% of the top avg players are using at least one mirrored item. And literally in my first couple sentences I talked about people doing the same deterministic crafting. So basically everyone is using the same rares, the same fractured bases as everyone else that uses essence until they hit the second mod then go to meta crafting til the item is dumb. Outside of those two things everything else in poe is a slot machine slog fest of crafting. You use thousands of alts and hope for a decent regal, or spend count prefix/suffix can’t be changed and hope for the slam or harvest roll, ladi dadi da. It’s so bad that by day 4 of fresh league I literally have every single piece of rare/white/magic item hidden on my loot filter. Because I’m most likely can just buy my base for 10c item level 85, and then spend anywhere from 4 divs to 15 divs trying to craft it depending on how lucky I get. For example, let say it takes me 15 Div to make a +1 power charge helm because I got a bit unlucky, and I settle for a +1PC 180 ES helm and it cost me 15d. I’m mostly likely not going to upgrade that helm ever, but in last epoch I enjoy upgrading here and there little by little, you fail some you win some, but at least it’s not an hour crafting session for one item which I’ve seen countless and countless crafters do on stream and RU-vid In the 8 years I been playing poe I always hated the crafting system in the game. I’ve always just dealt with it. And I’m the end you end up just making the same deterministic items each league but sometimes you come across an item that isn’t so deterministic and you know it’s gonna be a long crafting session and it’s just miserable thinking about it each time

@@Rawlingm I made a mistake with the percentage; I wrote something that was not what I meant. Had in mind 1 out of 1000 - 0.1% The current league is broken. This is the first league of its kind and probably the last. In the current league, a newcomer can get a mirror simply by farming. Forget about the current league. In other leagues, yes, a tiny number of people use mirror services. The number of services is not equal to the number of players, it is less. Those who use them do this more than once. >>when everyone is just either crafting the same things or just mirroring other peoples items. There is no "everyone". A tiny number of players use Mirror services. For most players (not beginners, average players) affording to buy t0 unique items like hh or mb is the limit of possibilities. I don't have statistics, but I think that 95%+ of players have never had a mirror at all (not counting this league). And most of the remaining 5% sold it without even thinking about mirroring any items. >>So basically everyone is using the same rares, the same fractured bases as everyone This is called meta. Do you know an ARPG where this wouldn't happen? There will always be items/mods that are more popular than others. I don't understand the essence of the complaint. You are given a choice of thousands of items and mods. Don't like meta? Use others. GGG brings variety to the meta every league. In this league they made 100+ alternative skills. Who is to blame for not using them and copying others? >>I literally have every single piece of rare/white/magic item hidden on my loot filter. Because I’m most likely can just buy my base for 10c item level 85 Play ssf or Ruthless. The problem with rare items is known, its only solution is a radically smaller amount of loot. It will be in Poe 2, and now it is in Ruthless. This problem exists in d4. Available in LE (which is also solved by the loot filter). What else do you want? This is literally what a loot filter is for - hiding what you don’t want to see. It’s easier for you to buy - but I don’t like to trade, and I don’t exclude good bases from showing. Why did you decide that the game should adapt specifically to you? >>but in last epoch I enjoy upgrading The gist of your story based on what you wrote is that you enjoy it because it’s easier. Crafting cool items in poe is difficult, but thanks to this, there are always goals in the game. You can't have everything in the game. You always have room to move and things to improve. How long will LE last if everything in it can be obtained deterministically? My opinion is that in a game of this genre there must be randomness. It's more interesting, it prolongs the life of the game. And no offense, but I’m sure that after some time you will return to POE.

@@user-xy1ru4zy2t I am not here trying to argue who is right or who is wrong here lol, yes there is more depth to crafting right now in PoE, but youre comparing a game that is in patch 3.23, while last epoch is in 1.0, and i prefer how crafting is in LE, it doesnt feel like a slot machine and its not that easy, yes easier to make base items with mods you want, but i still have been chasing LP3+ items and exalted items i can slam on them. PoE has years and years to get where it is today, LE just came out, I have been playing PoE for 8 years and I will never like the crafting system in the game, you either try to craft undeterministic items which can take hours if not days and thousands of crafting mats, or you just save up the currency and buy it. Yes there is SSF mode but I am already comparing the LE experience as SSF since I dont play online. playing SSF isnt just the answer just because the crafting feels bad in the game. Yeah of course i understand what meta is, its why they are meta, because they are powerful without much investment in time and resources to make powerful. PoE is far from being balanced while LE is very balanced where every skill and build is more than viable to push far corruption and do all content in the game even in SSF mode. LE just came out and give them 8 years and I guaranteee it will be a major competition for PoE 2. They understand their audience and I have nothing but faith in them making a very very good product in the years to come.

My armblade strikes gain tornado stacks, and the tornado is a flaming inferno that shoots lightning at nearby enemies.My dives gain maelstrom stacks, which does cold damage over a decent area around me. At 6 stacks, I gain frenzy, haste, and I shoot lightning at nearby enemies, and I'm typically at 8 stacks. Gonna run with this to see how deep into endgame I can go before I feel the need to tweak things.

Great video! I have about 200 houelrs in PoE, and it's definitely a love/hate relationship for me. Crafting is way too expensive and requires an insane level of commitment to understand how it works IMO. LE is a great middle ground and is immediately fun to play. I didn't need to get to the end before I felt like a mad scientist, and that's lacking in D4.
@MyNameIsSalo

LE crafting is definitely the best of the genre. Exalted items are always valuable to someone somewhere, whether its craftable on a good base or if it's craftable to merge with a unique. Even a single exalted mod, slam it 4 times into a 1LP unique, and you'll get that mod on average. And the LP system makes it so uniques can always be valuable even at 1LP it can be worth a lot. Making it so item drops always have value (equally so in trade and ssf leagues) is extremely important to arpgs so you constantly feel that progression. PoE items are bad, I stopped picking up all items last league and only went for currency and unique leather/heavy belts and unique gold rings, that's it. PoE item progression is "pickup some lucky drops and/or Rog, then buy the rest". And endgame crafting is super tedious. I think an ingame market for instant trading stackable items like crafting materials will go a long way to break down that barrier and enable players to craft.

I like LE because of the simplicity. You can pick up just random stuff from the floor and go through most of the game (excluding maybe t4 dungeons and very high corruption). Uniques are not mandatory but build enablers and if you struggle you can 'fix' your char pretty easily. And I get that LE will one day have to become like PoE with builds reaching thousands shapers per second dps but foundation is pretty good.
@bobbysnobby
@bobbysnobby 2 месяца назад
The biggest issue I have had with last epoch has been the amount of blockers that I find on builds and the lack of support for ideas within their limited tools. I also went in blind and wanted to do a MoM build because I saw sorcerer got more damage based on the mana cost of the spell. Looked through the spells and saw that meteor had 100% crit at more than 400 mana, saw a helm with 20-50% damage to mana before life and 120% crit multi seems like a match made in heaven. Turns out the direct support for recovering mana was just non-existent even with investment (if you were going to be throwing huge meteors) and so if I got overwhelmed or didnt 1 shot the content taking damage to mana puts me below 400 mana meaning no crit and now a death spiral. Swapping my build from meteor to just mana strike changed my dps potential from 600k range to 12 million range which is just an absurd delta in build performance. The lack of mana recovery support gutted the build and the system mechanics in LE dont support slow hard hitting abilities there is no proc-coefficient so fast hitting spells are just strictly better than slower more heavily invested ones meaning there was no reasonable way to pivot outside of dropping the idea of MoM which was the point of the character. So, I felt tricked by the game systems and the skill trees into doing something bad and had to totally pivot out of the idea in the "late" game (100+ corruption). I dont think the game needs to be as deep as POE but it only has 3 primary resources Ward Health and Mana and from what I could tell they arent really pushed design wise. LE overall has very conservative design which will limit freedom going forward and making skills reference skills directly in trees limits freedom a year from now, 2 years from now etc. More generic uniques that We can find ways to break is also better than being like "I wanna do spark charges, lets run a search on every unique with spark charges to try and find combos" I like it conceptually but I think it is under baked.

PoE 2 gameplay will be drastically different from the current PoE and a lot more slow paced but the general systems like crafting and skills should remain roughly the same so i would say if you are looking forward to PoE 2 there is no harm in trying to get accustomed to the basics of PoE now, like mapping basic gearing etc. But i would recommend following a build guide since refunding your skill tree is very limited early on and if you make bad choices you will struggle in the campaign. Also by now there are 10 years of content in the game which will be very overwhelming for new players with some many mechanics to choose from so following what the guide recommends to do after the campaign helps with that. you can go to maxroll for guides, they are usually very good for beginners and usually explain the whole leveling and gearing progress step by step (first link in the description is a link to the maxroll crafting section, just go and select "Build Guides" and then "League Starter") not sure if i can put a link. If you do not like those builds then theres a lot of league starter build guides on youtube but they might not be as detailed.

Second, difference in crafting methods and how the gear is going to look like. We have no idea about essence, harvest and synthesis. There are no alt or scour orbs. Chaos orbs are exalt and annul combined. Truly great gear is going to be hard to get and that's less damage for everyone, chaos spam is going to be tier 7 affix dogshit fiesta, chaos' better use in that case is main trading currency. Imagine LE crafting but every time you add an affix it can be tier 5 straight away, but you delete another affix. You'll just be picking up everything and then sorting that, vendoring it and maybe crafting it, basically playing like a first time poe player would, wasting time. Basic way to get gear right now is essence slam a fractured item. That's most likely not possible in poe 2. Also remember Legion and clusters jewels and annoints. Instilling orbs for flasks??? That's slower because you press 2-4 ability buttons in poe 2, there's 4 more for flasks. Third, support gems and awakened versions, current uniques that will be gone, except a few, and replaced for god knows what. Fourth, there will be not 1-2 six-linked items, but possibly all the items except jewelry, that's like 6 six-links. That's a lot of damage potential so health of everything will be cranked. What I have in mind is that the area is balanced around you having a certain damage and that damage comes from links, just like right now. But, in poe 1 they have to balance between you having 3 link or possibly 4 link. In poe 2 you could have 3-4 4-links in an area balanced around 2 3-links or you setup could be worse therefore slower. Basically, it's harder to balanced areas because it's harder to predict potential power players should have at that stage. They will most likely overshoot and every boss will feel like Elden Ring encounter when you didn't power level. Just look at boss presentations at exilecon and the most recent mercenary or whatever showcase. Finally, different or significantly reworked skill tree. No masteries means less specific power early on when you don't have a lot of points, of which there's probably not even 123 anymore.

Biggest diff in poe crafting is you dont wanna risk it. It takes way too long to gather all currency needed to craft an item and even then its probably not enough. The feeling i get before going into crafting in poe is like "oh boi😢" even though i know everything i need to know. And in last epoch im more like "ok its time😂😮"

I really wish I could get into POE but I think LE is the most complex I'm willing to get into. I hate needing to dive deep into online guides for things and I haven't been able to get out of the first few zones in POE without being too overwhelmed. LE has been a perfect balance between the chill vibes of Diablo and complexity of POE without being so complex the fun leaves the game (for me).

I think that balance for crafting in PoE could be done by putting some sort of forging potential to the crafting, and then going closer to a Harvest style of crafting. What I mean is that if Harvest crafting (original) also implemented forging potential, it means you can still brick items or have sub-par, but at least you can deterministically craft.

At around the 11min mark you talk about someone like me. I played PoE, I liked it enough to spend like $35 on the store buying tabs and such, but I don't know if it was the saboteur build I was running or what, but I didn't feel like I could progress into another spec or build without being punished hard. Whereas in Last Epoch right now I'm playing an Intelligence-based Ward Sentinel Dual Wield build that I made on my own and I'm holding my own in 100+ corruption. This normally wouldn't be possible as almost everyone goes Sentinel for the shield, but with just two unique items and a third set of gloves I crafted, I was able to transition to a Ward-based build. Such a thing wouldn't have been possible in PoE. Now, all that said, do I regret spending money on PoE? Absolutely not. I got to have fun and learned a lot while there, even if I didn't really get into the end game crafting that much. I also appreciate what PoE has done for the genre and I'm glad to have contributed. But I still probably prefer Last Epoch in the end. Being able to skip the campaign stuff with alternate characters is awesome. Having an easier and less RNG-based crafting system is awesome. Being able to try out different builds and not being punished is awesome. The Idol system makes handling resistances for endgame testing a lot easier, too. EDIT: I don't feel like GGG hates having an easy game, but I think they've forgotten that casual gamers don't really have the time to grind crafting nor do they have the patience to learn such a punishing crafting system. I don't think PoE should change to be easier, if anything, I think LE probably needs to make their end game a little bit more grindy, but I do think that trying a league where making OP crafted uniques would be OK. In PoE I can play for two weeks and not feel like my character is "done" as a casual player. In LE I can play for 3-4 days and feel like I've made it to end game for that character. I think the sweet spot is going to be somewhere in between.

Content is still kind of lacking, but it's very understandable considering they just released. And the base game has really cool systems. Crafting system is the best in the genre by miles, it got even better with experimental items and glyphs of insight, the trading/ssf faction stuff is great, and the way classes are set up is great too. They have so many different knobs to tweak to change stuff up, and they can obviously add more dungeons and different layers to mono. I'm not sure how to make arena interesting outside of stress testing your build and competing on the leaderboards, but that might be enough.

But POE is more fun all together just because i like blasting monster, LE monolith needs a lot more monster, levelling after level 70 is just pure pain, some echos has so less monster and some have so many, just feels weird.

I played PoE for a long time, off and on after the second or third league. I've played Last epoch off and on since they had beta's, and been playing it steadily since release. Here's my general take: if you like running spreadsheets and long intensive guides and lots of time invested in crafting and trading in order to succeed then play PoE. If you want the same enjoyment but without needing the spreadsheets and trading and all the rest, play LE. It's pretty much as simple as that. I always enjoyed PoE until I got to late game and had to trade/craft until my eyes bled, then I'd quit. LE is a simpler approach, but still involving work, and I enjoy that much more.

My pain point with poe crafting is that even though it's fun and gives a lot of sense of accomplishment to craft end game items, the accessibility is an issue. like you have to trade for the items most of the time , like essences, orbs n etc, and second layer of pain point comes in, the trade, where ppl not responding, only trade in bulks. all those shit
@PowerfulVillain
@PowerfulVillain 2 месяца назад
I can relate with the trade part and people not responding etc. But really you'd only craft so much that you're able to clear the content smoothly. After that crafting is just for profit tbh. If you play on ssf, you'd not depend on trade so maybe gives a lot more sense of accomplishment.

I didn't go in completely blind, but I made my own build. My dps was terrible at first. But I finally was able to itemize a few of my items and my dps skyrocketed passed what my friends have who are running build guides. I think you can actually take almost any idea you have to empowered monoliths. Maybe not super high corruption. But you should be able to make it if you just pat attention to scaling and the different defensive layers.

I really like playing PoE, like it FEELS good to move and cast skills, etc. But as a very casual player, I've literally never made it as far as maps in a league. I always fall off it because I get tired of having to reference PoB or external websites to see what's good or not. I really hope they kinda iron that stuff out a bit for PoE2, because I think the classes and pace look AMAZING. But LE really does make that sort of stuff accessible and intuitive. Complexity is awesome for a game, but in PoE I feel like there's no way to ramp into that complexity in-game. Always gotta pick a build ahead of time, yada yada yada. Overall, can't deny that PoE is a better game once you understand enough about it to dig deep, but LE certainly has the foundation to start adding complexity in a way that's much more inviting than PoE. What a good time to be an ARPG fan though, huh?

Great video! I'm new to ARPG's (coming from mainly first person looter shooters). I started with Diablo IV and have been really upset that the community has complained so hard about the game that the devs have made it easier and less rewarding over the seasons (was a grind to get to 100 and beat Uber Lilith pre-season but now any casual gamer will hit 100 in no time and anyone can follow a build guide to one shot Uber Lilith). I've since played Diablo II (loved it!), Grim Dawn (also loved it!), Diablo III and even Diablo Immortal (great MMO but evil monetization) but whilst all those games clicked with me I've failed to even get through the main story campaign of POE 4 times now. I'm 73hrs into Last Epoch right now and loving it. It's a fun game, but I feel it's too easy. In all 73 hrs I've only died 3 times (I die a lot when pushing high tier sigils in Diablo IV). I'd argue that without using a build guide Diablo IV actually has more build complexity than Last Epoch, but that said I'm hungry for more complexity and I'm 100% I'd find it in POE. I just need to get past the main story for starters (and after playing Last Epoch I'm more inspired than ever to give POE another go).

For me, having played atleast 6k hours of poe over the years aswell as owning LE since 2019 playing it on and off, the two most notable differences between the two is the satisfaction from loot drops as well as the satisfaction of when a build comes together. Poe just does loot sooo much better, I dont think I have ever had that feeling you get from a divine drops etc from LE. Also putting a build together in poe feels like completing a rubix cube with loads of mechanics all meshing together to create something special, LE builds are way more pigeon wholed and the synergies are just way too obvious. Just my opinion though
@peacefindersimply5001
@peacefindersimply5001 2 месяца назад
Interesting, have opposite opinion. Loot in Poe just annoys me because it completely revolves around skill gem slots and just makes a good drop pointless if it doesn’t have the gem slots you need. Endgame yes you can change these much easier but as for leveling up it ruined my excitement.

Poe is definitely quite difficult to pick up...I only put 400 hours into it but still thought like I had soooo much more to learn especially with crafting. Also not being able to respec a build easily really turned me off. I followed a build guide but realised too late that the build really wasn't for me but by then it was too late and hard to respec so I started a new character. Also the one shots off screen or the dead enemies exploding and killing you was just insanely dumb.

Keeping masteries locked is good. Keeps people experimenting with that mastery with all the skills at hand. I hope LE doesn’t cave in and make it respec-able. Besides the alt leveling to mastery is quick and there’s campaign skips. My main problem with POE is that there is no choice in builds. Cool tons of skills but a lot of them fall off and it’s not easy to respec as much as you make it sound. It’s straightforward brick. You have start over again with a new character. And the campaign, over and over again. That’s not fun at all.

I think it's a bit unfair to say "yellow maps is the start of end game" in PoE, and then say that Corruption is just repetitively doing the same thing. I think you make a lot of good points... but honestly I would compare normal monoliths to white maps, Empowered monoliths to Yellow maps, and getting 2-300 corruption (not even that much) to be more red map/end game... I can understand the feeling of monoliths getting stale after a bit... but maps feel the same way Either way LE needs more content and I do think they're taking it the right direction, overall good points! just wanted to point this one thing out
