Dreams really do come true. From the imagination of Edgar Wright, #LastNightInSoho is only in theaters October 29.
In acclaimed director Edgar Wright’s psychological thriller, Eloise, an aspiring fashion designer, is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters a dazzling wannabe singer, Sandie. But the glamour is not all it appears to be and the dreams of the past start to crack and splinter into something far darker.

Eloise starts out as a very enthusiastic / optimistic young person then has a hellish experience into a darker place. The cinematography and effects and composition of the scenes were great. I think it had a good plot ideea, good hook good actors, but it lacked bringing together, I can see that from edgar wright who has only directed comercial films, but this had that theatrical aspect (musical dance vibe, especially before the end) and he didn't manage to make that embrace the rest of the movie, it lacks the touch that would have bring together those parts, it seems "plastered on", I think this is the reason critics on IMDB didn't give it a better score. You look at the movie and say if this would have been done in a better way, this would've been so much better, maybe worthy of an 8, but..., so many movies now have boring everything and this really isn't like that, it was worth watching :))

@sylviaherle4835

yes because sadly charisma/ movie star aura is more appealing to the masses than the pure raw otherworldly acting talent that thomasin has. anya is the bigger movie star but thomasin is the greater actress.
@BetterWithBob
@BetterWithBob Год назад
also their roles in this are quite distinct. Thomasin is playing the audience surrogate who's vanilla in terms of personality, there to experience a more colourful and fantastical world, but she has the harder job because she also has to make sure we like Ellie and relate to her. She's very subtly compelling. Anya meanwhile has the more exciting role, as the glamorous 60s starlet, so obviously she commands the attention. But funnily enough, she was the first choice for Ellie until Edgar Wright realised she'd played that kind of character loads of times before, so she was cast against type as Sandie.
@EatMyTardis

I totally agree!! I feel without Thomasin Mckenzie this movie might have fallen flat...or at the very least it would be a lesser film without her. She honestly made the movie for me (Matt Smith helped a bit too buy he played second fiddle to her) Terence Stamp, as always, was epic.

During the end credits shots of a deserted, empty, central London flash on screen. All of these shots were completed during the COVID-19 global pandemic. The desertedness of the streets is real as England at the time was in a national lockdown. Final performance of Diana Rigg, who passed away on September 10, 2020. The film is dedicated in her memory. Thomasin McKenzie dropped out of Top Gun: Maverick (2022) to star in this movie. To achieve the shots of the students walking down the night-time Soho streets, the crew hid a Steadicam within a Bicycle Rickshaw taxi, commonly seen around the Soho area. The road was not closed off and the 'Extras' in the shot were unaware they were in a movie. The title comes from a song by pop band Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, "Last Night In Soho" released in 1968. This is the song that is played during the end credits. This movie was inspired by Don't Look Now (1973) and Repulsion (1965). The drink ordered by Sandie early on in the film is a vesper created by Ian Fleming in the 1953 James Bond novel Casino Royale. Author Stephen King had the opportunity to see this movie at an advanced screening, and he was so impressed by what he saw, he tweeted "I hardly ever re-watch - there's so many good things out there - but this one is special." Diana Rigg, Terence Stamp, Rita Tushingham and Margaret Nolan were all big names in British film, TV and theatre in the 1960s, when a great deal of the story in this movie takes place. The first Edgar Wright film to have a female protagonist. This is one of two Anya Taylor-Joy films delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the other movie was The New Mutants (2020). Both Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy have previously worked with director M. Night Shyamalan; the former in Old (2021) and the latter in both Split (2016) and Glass (2019). Foreshadowing: When looking for Sandy's missing persons case in the library, Eloise is passing by lots of missing persons cases regarding men. These men are later found out to be Sandie's victims. At the Halloween party Ellie and John attend, Ellie's former roommate Jocasta and her girl friends are dressed as the main characters in the 1996 witch movie The Craft (1996). Fittingly, Jocasta is dressed as Nancy, the film's villain. Foreshadowing: The landlady, later found out to be a serial killer states to Eloise, regarding the bathroom, that she will need to keep the plugs in during summer as the smells will rise, refering to the drains. This is more likely refering to the countless bodies of men hidden within the walls and floorboards. This is one of two Matt Smith films delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the other movie was Morbius (2022). Stars Matt Smith and Diana Rigg both appeared alongside each other in a 2013 episode of Doctor Who. Edgar Wright mentioned in an Instagram comment that the Director of Photography Chung-hoon Chung also shot The Handmaiden (2016) for Korean director Park Chan-Wook. According to Edgar Wright, after George Miller saw an early cut of the film, he was so impressed by Anya Taylor-Joy's performance that he met her immediately. He then offered her the leading role for his next film, Furiosa (2024).

This movie is brilliant. I watched it on a flight. I love how they portrayed that how captivating, mesmerising and tantalising a performer or an entertainer is, can actually succeed in making the viewer almost believes that they are also an entertainer themselves! Maybe because the concept of a ‘beautiful celebrity’ is in and by itself an extremely entertaining dream to the human brain! I also love how they showed that there is indeed a dark and gruesome background behind the glamorous world of entertainers, whether they are singers, dancers or both. And I loved the plot twist at the end it honestly was both crazy and unexpected! Really liked this movie and I definitely want to watch it again!

This movie is a masterpiece that works on so many levels. I felt like it was first and foremost a metaphorical freudian/lacanian drama about discovering ones' self and the relations with superego in the context of trauma and much much more. Also, apart from obvious nods to numerous classics from psycho through various film noir to mulholland drive, I couldn't help but think about the joker, another recent psychoanalitical-esque chef d'oeuvre made by a director from the comedic spectrum of the industry. All in all, best movie of the last year for my money.
