From a french fan of US Naval aviation : Great movies. I have Speed and Angels at home. It's one of the best aviation movie's I have saw. God bless these pilot's and her family. Best regards from France. Fred. "Fight's on !"
Had the pleasure of spending time at Fallon back in the sixties when the Navy used it to practice nuclear weapons delivery (loft bombing). I was an Aviation Electronics Technician and Plane Captain. The mosquitoes were nasty there. They were so big that one day we accidently refueled one thinking it was an A4-D Skyhawk. The pilots were Gods and I wanted to be one.
As a former Saint flying the A-4F Super Fox out of Miramar I had a blast and thought it was one of the greatest squadrons I have ever been in. I would have loved to have flown the F-5. “Biff”.
Do you happen to have this in a higher resolution? It's great, but 360p takes away from its greatness. In the Mooch interview I think you said it was on 8mm. So the resolution is in the original, but the digitization may be costly.
Man I love this. A lot of the people from Speed and Angels I really enjoyed seeing more of you all. I hope that, as there seems to be a resurgence of interest in aviation, you might be able to get a full length documentary funded and done. The Saints have such a rich history it deserves to be told.
@@pacoch Hey Paco. Had to pull this video up again today after seeing you on Mooch’s channel That was great. SPEED AND ANGELS was awesome. Bought the DVD as soon as it came out. Also bought SHOOT EM IF YOU GOT EM Direct from the Squadron on G W in Japan. Thank you for your service PACO. 👍🍺🍺🍺🍺🇺🇸
Gen. Yeager was said to have claimed there was no such thing as "the right stuff," or that he couldn't define it. But consider this...from my limited flying experience, and watching flying and talking to professional pilots (my father included) and listening to these guys, it seems to me that "the right stuff" is simply the ability to strap on a machine like the F-5 and become one with the machine. If you have the right stuff, the gap in achieving this oneness closes to a certain point. These guys exhibit this quality, and to a degree, race car drivers have it too, but they don't operate in a three-axis world. As one who very much respects professional pilots, and envy's them too, it's good to see the respect they have for their profession, and those who have gone before them. Godspeed, Gentlemen!
Paco thanks for this man!…I was just on Ward’s channel and came here when you mentioned it. I wanted to fly for the Navy when I was a kid but my parents put the kybach on that. So I live it through you, Ward, C.W. Lamoine and others. You guys are the greatest of all time. Thanks again. Ps - Im a huge Tomcat fan and got to see an A model up close (A- according to you lol) wish I had a chance to sit in one.
@@SPFLDAnglerNot all museums have ones you can sit in. At the Boeing Museum of Flight in Renton, WA for example there is an A model (I forgot the squadron number) but it was a Jolly Roger used in The Final Countdown. That one is sectioned off and there’s no real way to get a good look at the empennage. Still a beautiful jet and holy cow I was surprised how BIG it was even in full 68 degree sweep.
I’ve been listening to a few ‘Speed and Angels’ reunion podcasts of late and have rewatched the documentary and it’s still awesome. ‘Lions of the Sky’ is a great read and I normally don’t do fiction . One final question, how does a pilot end up with the call sign ‘Sir Buckethead’ ?!😂
Yellow13 thanks, man! So glad you liked it. More to come.

These boys & girls are lucky to do what they ever dreamed about and at the same time cursed by being used for our pity humanity that can't live in decent harmony & peace. But by the things that are and is by today's world society I'm glad they fight for the freedom we all have and I respect their sacrifice. 👍✌️
Last of the dog fighters is correct. Was with VFA-94 at Lemoore and the pilots would tell about the training. Our pilots would tell us both ways if they won of course they would tell first thing. They would tell if they lost but had to ask them.
Paco. Is there any chance you remember the 2000 c/o Lumpy? I know this is the wrong venue, but I'm his eldest son, and as I get older I've been trying to find people who knew him and have stories to share. He passed from cancer at 41 in 2001. I would like to preserve his legacy for the grandchildren he never got to meet. Thanks in advance. I'll leave you with one of the last things he said......."check your 6"
im gonna be honest, when most people want to become fighter pilots they want to do this sort of thing, but whats sad is that it never happens anymore, I miss the days when it actually took skill for a fighter pilot to survive an encounter with another plane instead of nowadays where all people do is press a few buttons on their dashboard and then fly away, may the saints live on through the lessons they give to the rest of the tech savvy creampuffs who fly the fighter jets of today
Just ordered Speed and Angels from Ebay looking forward to getting it, May I ask did ever get to fly with any of our Aussie (RAAF) pilots? as you may know that we fly the F/A-18+, F and the G's, from talking to crew of a Growler they they have been to the State's a number of times even did the Death Valley Star Wars canyon run. All the best from Australia.
He's a legand! Operation Bolo in Vietnam was simply outstanding. He INSISTED his pilots be trained to dogfight. I would like to think it was his actions that let to red flag and top gun!
Hey, good on you guys. I'll say it every chance I get....Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps pilots.....thank you, thank you, thank you....and JTAC's. Appreciated all the support, y'all putting steel on target, and hanging your assess out there. God knows I've seen/heard Haji's firing manpads at you guys. Keep doing good things.
This short film just doesn’t get enough credit! It encapsulates the desire to pursue high performance aviation so well!! I’ve watched it so many times and every time I’m only sad when the video ends. I wish there was more! S&A is wonderful but this is something truly special even more so in todays world of virtual training. At the end of the day, there is no replacing the man in the machine! Keep writing Paco!! I can’t wait for your next book!
It would be absolutely amazing to just be present at a fighter pilots end of career ceremony. Understanding such a minuscule amount of dog fighting pilots, would still be a huge life experience to witness the passing of the torch and see the experience he has had throughout his life’s work decorating his character and uniform. Thank you very much for risking it all for all of us!!! Be safe and stay healthy!!! Cheers 🙇🏻♂️🙇🏻♂️
CDR Chierici, Sir, I came across you and Meagan on the Tomcast, episode 20. What a terrific episode! It was from there that I wound up here. I learned a lot just listening to, and watching this entirely too short clip. I am a proud F-14A maintainer who was in the fleet from '82-'86, then two years reserve. I have carried the lessons I learned in those days well into my professional career post-navy. I want to thank you, and all of the people I've ever served with, for teaching me so many very valuable things, and to remind me of where I came from professionally. I appreciate it.
In the 80’s at Oceana we had VF-43 Challengers as aggressors. They didn’t have F-5’s but they had Israeli F-21 KFIR’s. Souped up light A-4’s, F-16N’s and T2 Buckeyes for training. I have been to Fallon probably 15x on DET in various F-14 Squadrons I’ve been in. I miss it a lot, because now I’m literally a FROG 😂 Great job men!
Not a flier, just an enthusiast from the UK here. Watched "Speed & Angels" a couple of nights ago because I heard your interview about the F-5 on FPP. Awesome documentary. This is like the cherry on the cake. Great work.
I am a fan - nothing more. But this is the best fighter pilot video I have ever seen. I can't believe it isn't in a top RU-vid viewing matrix with a few hundred thousand views and thousands of comments but I am glad to be able to have this treat to myself today!
I am trying to set up an Agressor Squadron in DCS just to keep my mates in our Air Wing on the edge and well trained. Any source about the tactics you guys were using in the F-5 ? Some kind of book or any documents available ? Thanks Paco, you lived our dream !!!
John Gisbourne we used a manual called MCM 3-1 to reference foreign tactics and set our maneuvers for BVR presentations. For the engaged maneuvering, we just used cunning, experience, and guile to fight as hard as we could. I put a bunch of unclassified tactics in the book, Lions of the Sky if you want to read up. goo.gl/iD5a9D
All good things must come to an end and the days of the fighter pilot are quickly drawing to a close. Thanks to technology war is becoming more and more impersonal and therefore more and more likely. To quote Curt Jurgens in "the Enemy Below' " They've taken human error out of war. They've taken human out of war!"
Basically it's like being on a roller coaster that wants to shove you through the seat. You start to get tunnel vision, but once your body gets used to the g's you don't feel as bad, and the tunnel vision fades away
It’s really amazing - everyone of those dudes was wearing a Top Gun patch. As a reserve squadron they can hire who they want. Same for the Omars at Oceana. I think I read that when the Hunters VFA201 went on their historic cruise in 2003 all but three of the pilots were FWS grads. That’s nuts. It’s really not an exaggeration when that one guy says these are the best fighter pilots in the world.
Old school pilots...they wear the parachute out to the aircraft. For the CO as a Captain kind of a sad day. Giving up a profession that is carved in blood, training, and experience. Your stuck with either staff desk jobs, possibly Airwing or Aircraft Carrier CO. Whatever job it is the day to day flying is gone. You might get some time for currency and training but for the most part everyday flying is gone. Hope he had fun and moves on to flag rank or retires as they say....going out on top. Fair Winds and Following Seas!!
We made the movie Speed and Angels. (www.amazon.com/Speed-Angels-DVD-Game-n/dp/B001B187CU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410282457&sr=8-1&keywords=speed+and+angels)
Getting older and advanced in your career can kinda suck. Even as an enlisted Tomcat maintainer, I truly miss the flight deck, flight line, and hanging with the best people I've ever met. Kudos to all you adversary types, you make the fleet squadrons the best in the world, & help them make it back home!
Wait... You are *the* "Paco" Chierici?? Dude!! You and Guido are absolute legends in naval aviation! You guys rank up there with Heater Heatley and Hoser Satrapa. I'm so glad this wandered into my RU-vid suggested videos.
