Last Shot at Redemption... Will We Succeed? Sega Game Gear Repair-a-thon, Round 3.

In the final episode of the Game Gear Repair-a-thon, I attempt to repair the third unit in a batch of three faulty Sega Game Gears that were donated to the channel.
If you missed Episode 1 or 2, links below:
🎮 Episode 1: • Sega Game Gear Repair-...
🎮 Episode 2: • Can a Faulty Sega Game...
This unit happened to be in near-mint cosmetic condition, which as I've come to learn with Game Gears, doesn't necessarily mean much. Like the previous two units this one powers up, but there is no sound from the speaker. It appears to have issues with the screen in the form of horizontal lines and vertical artifacts.
Like the previous two episodes, we have to recap this unit. There is no point diagnosing a faulty Game Gear without recapping it first. Its capacitors are known to leak, the boards almost always have corrosion from capacitor juices, and a thorough cleaning and recap usually resolves most issues that these units tend to have.
As promised, I plan to give away one of these Game Gears when I manage to repair one, so stay tuned for an upcoming video announced on how you can enter the Game Gear giveaway ;)

Once again, thanks for donating the Game Gears! Was a fun series and enjoyed getting to know the internals of the system. Kind of relieved this one is working so I can do the giveaway as promised. In future I'd love to repair both a stock unit for myself and own a modded one too. Anyway plan to tackle a few other systems in the backlog that I'm pretty excited to start working on, but hopefully you'll see the Episode 1 Game Gear live on as an LCD modded unit in the not-too-distant future. Cheers.

I remember as a kid wanted a Game gear so bad, but my parents couldn't afford even a Sega haha and when I finally manage to get one year later, the screen didn't last long, unfortunately I sold it to a friend as I didn't know I could change the capacitors, I stump up with your videos remembering that haha, and now you are doing a full series on it, glad you manage to fix it, and thanks for the memories :D

One thing to note: after you snip the legs of the through hole components, always re-solder the joint. The act of snipping the legs can create micro-fractures in the solder which may lead to failure down the line. Note sure if you did this, but it wasn't shown in the video. This inspired me to pull my Game Gear apart just to check for any corrosion . Seems all good but might order some replacement caps anyway! Keep up the great work!

FYI, there's a community project to build a game gear from "all new" parts. it's a new main board (with zero electrolytic caps), compatible with modern IPS upgrade screens and the enhanced sound / Li-On battery board. Basically, you're just moving the original ASIC and cartridge slot and stuff over from the corroded dead board, to the good new one. As far as cleaning rubber membranes go, you can boil them for a short amount of time to restore the feel to them. There are tutorials online with temps and times. Also, IMO that screen was pretty scratched up. I personally would consider polishing the acrylic if you're not going to replace the bezel.
