Dude you are a great teacher. Thanks man. My first memories are my brothers putting this song on first thing in the morning when I was like 4 years old and this song was brand new. I would not have played guitar if I never heard this then. Now I can play it thanks to you.

Why don't any music books show the exact chords for songs as used by the professionals - how the hell do they expect us to learn. I gave up trying to learn the guitar after many many years of frustration. This may persuade me to have one last try before consigning them to the loft for ever.

Bernd, it looks like the bass note is G, on the 3rd fret of the E string (the thickest string on the guitar neck. From there, he picks the F note, 3rd Fret on the D string then picks the same string on the fret behind (or 2nd Fret) down to the 1st fret and so on. Afterwards, he adds in the open B and E strings by finger picking them at the same time as he picks the F, Fb & E notes on the D string (or fourth string). All that from just watching this for the first time and not played a guitar in over six months. Persevere!!

Last night, I saw the Monkees in concert at the Houston Arena Theatre. They opened with "Last Train to Clarksville." Peter Tork played the same lead chords you teach in your video. At the same time, Mike Nesmith alternated between G and F chords on his 12-string white Gibson guitar. It was very cool to see Nesmith play with the Monkees again after all these years!

Joe, Excellent job on your Last Train to Clarksville lesson. The original Monkees record featured Louie Shelton on lead guitar. I saw a concert video of him playing Last Train to Clarksville, and your lead break is very true to Louie's version. He said that several session guitarists wanted to play on the Monkees recording, but he got it because he created the unique intro riff and lead break.

The biggest set back I find here on YT is when I am setting here playing at night is you find so many different artist played their songs in slightly different tunings. Sometimes right on 440 tuning , other times slightly higher, some times a slight bit lower. I need about ten guitars set at different tunings. Not enough time, not enough guitars! lol

@sdcb27 I'm only picking >6th string/3rd fret to open 3rd string; then pick in order= 4th string/3rd fret, open 3rd string, open 2nd string; 4th string/2nd fret, open 3rd string, open 2nd string; open 4th string - repeat. All down picking, I personally do not pick this up and down. Hope that helps ~ Joe

Nice Joe have that ascending riff G to F maj7 sorted now thanks
@gtrjoe1901
@gtrjoe1901 11 лет назад
You're very welcome. To get the tone, you need single coils - so that means the strat you have and use the bridge pick up, If your amp has a vox type setting use that or a clean tone with a bit of reverb. That should do it, good luck ~ My Best ~ Joe
@gtrjoe1901
@gtrjoe1901 11 лет назад
I've noticed that also, but I'm not sure it's that the videos aren't tuned to 440. I think the YT player and how it converts the uploaded video or plays it back with the flash format changes the pitch slightly. I know this because it happens to my videos....just one of the quirks of YT we have to put up with ~ My Best ~ Joe

Great lesson Joe. Thanks a lot. One question though - how do you get that tone? I have a Epi Les Paul, a Rickenbacker 12 string and a cheap strat knock off and would love to get the sound you have on this clip.

Thank you for posting this. I Love the sound that is coming out of the telecaster! I have questiions, is the tele you built and shown on your others lessons? Also what kind of amp are you using. I have bad luck with the telecasters. I tried the MIM FSR Telecaster, the Squire Classic Vibe 50s tele. Maybe when I get another tele, I should upgrade the pickups. What pickups are on your tele you are using now in this video? I love the twangy sound of the tele, what kind of pickups you suggest I get to have like a Keith Richard sound and the twangy sound, that the tele is famous for? Thanks.
@gtrjoe1901
@gtrjoe1901 8 лет назад
+Angel Martinez The tele is made by Logan Guitars - really great tele's (I sold my Fender because I liked his so much and they are not real expensive). For sound I am playing through Amplitube 3 software on my Windows computer. I just set up a clean Fender type amp with some compression and that did the trick. I'll have to check out Valerie - stay tuned ~ My Very Best ~ Joe
@AngelMartinez-qs3cf
@AngelMartinez-qs3cf 8 лет назад
+gtrjoeles Hey thank for you posting this! Logan guitars, I am at there website now, is your guitar the White Blonde or the Natural Black tele. I have one other question, I know any guitar can play anything but for the Keith Richards stuff, would you play this guitar or a tele with a humbucker in the nect, like a Fender Classic Series '72? Sorry for the many questions, I am trying to buy a Tele. Thaks.
@gtrjoe1901
@gtrjoe1901 11 лет назад
Well, they are usually written with basic generalizations. I take all kinds of things into account for my lessons, guitar tabs, other lessons on YT and live artists videos. Taking all that into account I try to get an accurate lesson, Don't give it up, there are tons of good stuff on the net now & you should be able to be a good player with some hard work (that can be fun also) and time. Take a small part get that down then move to another, you'll be on your way to outplaying ME ~ My Best ~ Joe
