As a Vietnamese, I am very grateful for what Bao Dai's ancestors did for the country during 400 years. But for Bao Dai alone, he really didn't contribute anything to his country. He spent most of his time at the palace with his mistresses. And I think Nam Phuong is a very beautiful woman (even by modern Vietnamese standards).

She is the epitome of a true royal: educated, classy, extremely intelligent and firmly stuck to her beliefs (she came from an established Catholic family in southern Vietnam). Too bad she had quite a lonely and quiet life after the disposition of the monarchy and lived thousands of miles away from her homeland and subjects.

We live in an era where the practice of Polygamy has mostly died out. Most women would not toletate such a thing. I myself don't get the appeal but that doesn't change the fact that it was once a widespread cultural practice in many countries, in one form or the other. As a Vietnamese with a deep understanding of history, I would say Emperor Bao Dai - husband of Empress Nam Phuong is not as bad as most people think, he has his own adversities. As a king with good looks coupled with a pompous personality I wouldn't excuse his having many mistresses, but as the king of a weak state under domination, he had almost no power, but deep down he was still patriotic, a man who knew the times, so he made respectable efforts in regaining the entire territory of Vietnam in negotiations with the Japanese at that time. occupied after World War II and was ready to abdicate for the great cause of the country. Our country has its own circumstances, our last King and Empress also have their own choices and fates and I respect that very much.

When Bao Dai was removed from power, he was living in exile with his concubine in France. He fell into depression and often "ran away" from home for days. That's why no one knew where he was to inform him when Nam Phuong passed away. This made him very sad and upset with the concubine. Bao Dai died in poverty and loneliness; even his children didn't show up at his funeral. The fate of Vietnam's last royal family is, in a way, a real tragedy.

The dethroned emperor did not deserve such a woman and she could have lived a happier life if she was more cautious of a man with so much power (with an ego to match I presume.) But God rewards those who suffer but still loves. Her children might have been the greatest joy in her life. (Safely assuming, I hope.) What caused her husband to totally shun her was probably the fact that she was smart, logical and patient while his mistresses probably boosts his ego by viewing him as a forever emperor with diamonds spewing out of his mouth while talking. He totally deserved those women.

Her father was one of the richest merchants in vietnam at that time. Some people hypothesized that Bao Dai married Nam Phuong just for her family’s money. Yes, as a daughter of richest man in vietnam and having good relationships with french authority, the empress easily bought a palace in france and lived luxuriously

Nam Phuong was the most devoted, most beautiful, loving, kind hearted Vietnam Empress. She gave her faithfulness, her heart and love to the wrong man. Bao Dai had a change of heart, spent most of his time chasing after his mistresses, one after another. Bao Dai couldn't live without women, many women certainly. Bao Dai did nothing great for Vietnam, he enjoyed the royal lifestyle of a King with lots of WOMEN. He was not a good King/Husband/Father. Nam Phuong died from broken hearted, from her loneliness in her very last moment of life. Nam Phuong will forever be remembered and stay in the hearts of the Vietnamese people. Haven't seen a single vietnamese that says anything negative about her. She was the ONE and Only.

How sad! Had she lebt him for good, her whole home country, which she highly was endeared too, would have despised her. She followed the highest unspoken Asian rule to 'Save Face'

Actually Nam Phu'o'ng is pronounced similarly to, or rather translated as, 南风/封. When French occupied Vietnamese, the Chu' Nom traditional handwritten Chinese was completely eliminated and left with alphabetical transliteration which is now the standard & modern Vietnamese language. Chinese is very rare and still studied within Buddhist scriptures in some temples there. Vietnamese are Chinese migrants Southwards of China~

all we can do is suspect why they drifted apart. My guess is deep down he was ashamed for not being able to be the man for her. People do strange things when they are crushed of their spirit and I think Bao Dai was that. He was a smart man, many people confirmed this including North and South gov. officials. But he couldn’t win the change of the century: so many monarchs fell and people wanted democracy; we cannot blame the fall of Nguyen dynasty on him. I pity them both and also appreciate them for the life they have lived, both the good and bad part; we don’t need to trash either of them (I’m looking at all the Viets in this comment section😂, you are the hardest critics of the King and Queen without enough research and study of their lives)

Not really. By that point they’re no longer in any position of respectable power, other than with a family name and inherited wealth. That’s like saying Harry and Megan leaving the UK as being the same of them “abandoning” their people.

They were born into french rule. The previous emperors did try to revolt but were sent in exile to algeria or africa. Wtf were they supposed to do?

@@LucielStarz123 they didn’t have any “royal wealth”. Her side of the family was wealthy. His family was not. The French had already stolen most of Vietnam’s wealth before he even became king. All he had was a stipend.
