Its funny how Enemies can be the people you live with to the death. In this case RMS Olympic and RMS Mauritania started out life being rivals but through time and tragedy on both sides, they become both the last of there class and both bowed out together, in the end not as enemies but as friends. (in a sense)

Markus, Olympic was dismantled in two stages, the superstructure was dismantled at Jarrow and the hull was dismantled at Inverkeithing, In Fife. Harland and Wolff were her builders. Mauretania (1907) was also dismantled at Jarrow at the same time and were both purchased by a man named John Jarvis to bring jobs and an income to the area that was severely effected by the great depression. The other ship in this video is the RMS Queen Mary and she is now a hotel in Long Beach, CA, my wife and I spent our honeymoon aboard her.

Mauretania was demolished at Rosyth, not Jarrow. It was the Berengeria that was brought by John Jarwis and later scrapped at Jarrow.

You wanna know what’s even more sad about the Olympic? Olympic was the only surviving Sister of the 3 Olympic Sisters Originally White Star built Olympic with 2 other sister ships, The Britannic (Launched 1914,) and more famously, The Titanic (Launched 1911) Almost everyone knows the Story of the Titanic, She sank after striking an iceberg on her maiden voyage on April 5th 1912, and 1500 People died in her sinking. And The Britannic Never served as an ocean liner, when she was launched, the Royal navy converted her into a Hospital ship, On November 21st 1916 She Struck a mine layed by U-37 of the coast of Kea, an island south of Greece, she sank in under an hour, Unlike on the Titanic, only 57 people died of the 1000+ Crew that were aboard her. But still Olympic remained the sole survivor of all 3, until 1935 when she was scrapped. But yet again, that doesn’t mean that “Old Reliable” Wasn’t as famous as her younger sisters, on the contrary she had Quite the Story Behind her. She was Launched on October 30th 1910 From the Harland and Wolff Shipyard in Belfast, And had her maiden voyage on May 31st 1911, She had the title of “Largest ship in the world” at the time, and the crowds cheered as she made her trips from Southampton to New York, But on her 5th return trip on September 20th 1911, she collided with the HMS Hawke, The olympic had sustained significant damage but she stayed afloat, but the hawke had its bow completely flattened, but yet it stayed afloat, (Dispite having the Naval equivalent to a Broken Nose) They Olympic Class liners were labeled as “Unsinkable.” In the press because of its new Watertight compartments and Double bottoms in her hull, and the collision with the hawke only improved the claim, After repairs the Olympic returned to service, on April 5th 1912 Olympic Received the SOS Calls from the Titanic and had attempted to Race towards the Coordinates of her ill-fated Sister to attempt a rescue but the crew realized that they had a couple problems, They wouldn’t make it in time to help Because they were too far away, and that the Olympic was the first of her class while Titanic was the second, and that they’ll probably just accidentally scare the survivors of the Titanic when a mirror image of the ship they were on and had just sank comes along side and asks the survivors to board. So they canceled their attempt and kept on heading back to Southampton. When WW1 Started The Olympic was Requisitioned as a Troop Transport by the British admiralty, while her newly launched Sister, The Britannic, was Requisitioned as a Hospital ship, During her time as a troop transport, she had been given both guns and a new coat of “Dazzle” Paint, so she wouldn’t be spotted by U-Boats, but she was Spotted by 1 U-Boat on May 12th 1918), U-103, they thought that she’d be “Easy Pickings”, They were FAR From right, the had Olympic spotted them, opened fire on them, and turned to ram them before they could launched torpedoes, causing the crew to panic and forced them into a crash dive to try and avoid, they succeeded at avoiding the main hull, but they got clipped by her propeller and they had to abandon ship, all 31 Survivors were picked up by the USS Davis. (It’s quite amusing actually, imagine the crew of U-103 admitting to their higher ups that they were sunk by an Ocean liner, A U-BOAT Top of the Line purpose-Built Ship of War that could DIVE Under Ocean, Keep that thought in mind, Was Sunk by an Ocean liner that had been converted into a Troop Transport! Ridiculous But True!) During the War Olympic Made Quite a few stops in Halifax, Nova Scotia. and she had been pretty popular there having a few Public areas named after her, ie “The Olympic Gardens” After the War she was restored back to her ocean liner glory and had returned to ferrying passengers instead of troops across the Atlantic, she has even had a few high profile passengers during her 1920’s run, like Famous Actor Charlie Chaplain. In 1930 the UK merged White Star with Cunard, so the Olympic went from being a White Star Line ship into (Technically) A Cunard Ship. On October 29th 1932 Olympic finally lost her title of “Largest ship in the World” To the Newly launched SS Normandie operated by … a name that’ll take me about an hour to spell, So In 1935 after traveling over 20 million nautical miles and Ferrying Tens of Thousands of passengers, her final chapter comes to a close, Everyone waved goodbye to the Olympic as she departed New York on her way back to Southampton for the last time, and then made her trip to the scrappers along side her old rival now Fleetmate, the Mauretania. The Olympic has had a long and full career, and if Olympic was a person, She’d have the greatest story to tell, A Story of Sadness, a Story of Joy, a Story of Pride, and a story of Luck.

Does??? She is long gone.. We need to understand the situation of those times. Though these liners were famous and sentiments were joined with them, the people out there of that era were not Titanic buffs or Ocean Liner Enthusiasts. It was same as we treat old mode of transport today, old, outdated, rusted. They treated them as a thing belonging to their grandma time. Also the 1930s was a time of great depression and these old liners were not generating any income to the shipping line. Maintenance cost was also become a burden. The world was also changing rapidly and people looked up to new things. These vessels were only some tons of steel. New liners like Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, Rex, Normandie were on the horizon. The interest in Titanic disaster dimished somewhere after the first world war. It again started anew only after Walter Lord brought out his magnum opus 'A Night to Remember' during the 1950s. For the earlier generation Titanic was something of a failure and embarassment. People seldom talked openly about it except during one of her anniversaries. They would have laughed when someone would have called Titanic the ship of dreams then. It was only a ship of death to them. So there is no use for us to mourn the demise of the old liners and think if it would have been good to preserve the Oly and Maury from destruction..

The cost is astronomical too, it’s not like you can strip an ocean liner of its innards and park it in a shed or hangar somewhere. It has to be kept largely intact to ensure it maintains stability, and every single fixture and fitting requires constant maintenance. Just look at the state of the Queen Mary or even worse the SS United States. Other than the Titanic connection, both of those liners were far more noteworthy than Olympic and still they don’t generate enough money to preserve them properly.

Mauretania's structure was a bit more pronounced than Lusitania's. But yes, both were very similar and had the exact same colors when they first entered service. It wasn't until World War I when that changed.

Markus Olympic was sold for scrap in 1935 she sailed to Jarrow along with Mauretania where she was gutted to hull only then towed to Scotland and totally scraped in 1937 .Harland and Wolff had nothing to do with her scraping what so ever Olympic was also owned by Cunard by then not W S L. If you care to look at "The White Swan Hotel" you will see Olympic's 1st class lounge her windows wood panels and grand stair case not as we know it but its there her legacy so to speak .

Totally scraped of what? Her paint? Really changes the context of what you are trying to say with an extra letter correctly placed. Yes, they were both 'scrapped' and I dare say a lot of 'scraped' metal ensued as well during the scrapping process!

Always sad but a ship was built for 30/40 years of lifespan. President Roosevelt has wrote a letter to Cunard management begging for the salvation of Mauretania sadly without results. The merger of Cunard and White Star combinated with the diminution of passengers has forced the shipping lines to scrap lot of the oldest units of their fleets.

Hmm.... To be honest the famous R.M.S Olympic was in a war Design when it was her last voyage, a reminder R.M.S Olympic did not sink, but was so called "Murderd" when She got to Harland & Wolff Shipyard, socalled scrapped! :( If it just would stand at the Harland & Wolff shipyard, then It would be great! But White Star Line think'ed to put it back to sea the "Curse of Olympic-class Liners" Would end by sinkin it too!

At least Queen Mary was lucky, but Mauretania and her rival, Olympic were not, they were literally broken up and mûrdërd, WHY, JUST FREAKING WHY, they should’ve been either been sunk, making RMS Olympic and her sisters aka Titanic and britannic even, Or they should’ve been turned into either a museum ships or floating hotels
