I'm 62 now. I remember when those tracks were all active. Look up, Google the train wreck just past the Broad Street trestle. Heading east away from Glen Ridge station it flipped over and 3-4 cars ended up in backyards. One of the girls in class had a box car in her yard.
I remember when this line was active like crazy I also remember the accident that you're talking about do you remember what year it was thinking it was the 70s. I've always tried to Google it but never had much luck finding any information on it.
The abandoned railroad at 40:40 is the old Norfolk Southern Orange Branch. It was a freight spur that serviced some factories in Bloomfield which were later demolished and replaced with apartments. The last train that ran on those tracks was sometime between 2007 or 2008.
Belleville Ave bridge took a shot from a double decker bus and a person was killed when the top level was almost scraped off by the bridge. Story I heard was it was on the way to Atlantic City NJ and the driver was trying to get to the Garden State Parkway.
This isn't the Boonton Line. It's the remnant of the Erie Greenwood Lake Branch. It was joined by the Erie Newark Branch in the Meadows. The Boonton Line still exists as the Main Line to South Paterson. The line through Paterson was sold to the state for I-80. The Boonton Line is joined by the Greenwood Lake Branch at Mountain View, and the Boonton Line is then used to Denville, where it joins the Morris & Essex Line to Dover and beyond.
It will be expensive to repair or replace the bridges over the Passaic and Hackensack Rivers. The current bridges need extensive repairs. Plus the cost of bridgetenders if there is maritime traffic.
NJ Transit illegally discontinued service on this line without ASKING the Public. The Montclair connection and extending electrification is good, but no replacement for tbe old New York and Greenwwood Lake branch (NJT Boonton Line)... They should just leave this line alone and when funds are obtain, the line could be brought back.
Originally, this line ran to the shore of Greenwood Lake. It was cut back to Wanaque-Midvale, which was 32.1 miles from Jersey City. The Caldwell Branch left the Greenwood Lake Branch 15:14
