This is very quickly becoming my favourite series on youtube. I know it will probably be ages but I can't wait to see tom talk about ds9, everything from the wacky s1 episodes to episodes like in the pale moonlight
Despite Tom saying "Of course he's alive" about the end of Best of Both worlds (Part 1), they were actually considering having Riker take over the show since they hadn't confirmed Stewart's contract going forward. So it was a real possibility that he would have been killed off.
Honestly the episode where Picard was literally tortured and given ptsd was way better acted. Was also funny that he's completely fine like 3 minutes later
The O'Brien episode in DS9 was infinitely better than the flute man. O'Brien actually goes crazy and thinks he's a horrible monster even though it was all a computer simulation of him being in prison for 20 years. Of course it gets ignored in later episodes, but at least it tries...
I was thinking about that one (the one were they gaslight him) it is funny how he got very seriously mental fucked, maybe even being compromised, but the next episode doesn’t even address it
I love that episode especially because Riker is such a little dick head and the replacement captain totally calls him on it. Although I do hate it that when they totally do need Riker he's just a smug asshole all over again.
I think something a lot of fans of older sci fi like Star Trek struggle to accept is that while they had a lot of great episodes and introduced the average person to a lot of interesting concepts it’s almost inevitable that those concepts have been done better since then
That's called the Seinfeld effect. At the time it was a pioneer concept, blazing the trail. But since it's been further refined modern watchers see it as a cliche or underwhelming. A lot of modern sitcoms owe a lot to the Seinfeld show, but since the concepts have been iterated on so much, it doesn't feel original anymore.
@@dermathze700 I'm curious what you think did a better job with those ideas than Dune? I don't necessarily disagree I just can't think of anything myself
@@lilyeves892 I haven't read the books, so I can only speak for the original and the new Dune movie, but I personally prefer the Force in Star Wars to the powers in Dune, and the Empire in Warhammer 40k to the one in Dune. Again, only from what I've seen in the movies, and I know a lot more about Star Wars then Dune. I generally don't like chosen ones at all, but if have to pick, probably Avatar? Since being the Avatar isn't tied to a specific prophecy, but one single person still has a grand duty and get's granted the powers to follow it, in their own way. All in all, maybe it's just that people hyped up Dune for years online, but when I saw the movies I just thought "Yeah, it's ok.", but I don't know.
One of my favourite episodes is where a less developed civilization thinks Picard is a god. Because Picards reaction is the best when he really gets cross with the people seeing him as a god.
I love most of TNG and I also really appreciate Tom's breakdown of the episodes, when I next rewatch it will definitely have me laughing when this commentary will pop into my head.
To be fair, Tom did the flute episode quite a disservice by how he summed it up to barry. It's a nice episode, both in the concept and in it's execution, and "yeah he just plays a flute the entire time" is quite unfair. But also to be fair, it's not the best of star trek, nor the best of TV, so comments overreacted a lot there. On another note: I liked the premise of measure of a man, but not the execution. The episode very much frustrated and infuriated me even when I watched it as a kid, because it was inconceivable that any system of justice could be that dysfunctional and arbitrary (I only learned about what courts are like in the US many years later, and was even more disheartened than by this episode) ESPECIALLY given that the federation is supposedly a futuristic utopia.
Ye it's one of my favorite episodes but I always found it odd, data was always treated as a sentient being in the show prior to that episode. Especially given the fact he's got a pretty high rank in starfleet
@@lilyeves892 yeah, that would be like giving the ships computer a rank, they gave him a rank so it's already sort of implied that he should have the same rights (including human rights) as any other with that rank.
I'd love to see his reaction to Ship in a Bottle. That one is actually my favorite. I recognize that that's at least partially nostalgia. But it's just fun. Also I really enjoyed Cause and Effect. I haven't seen the Red Dwarf episode though. Also, I feel like Ben would love Redshirts by John Scalzi. And Tom would love making fun of Redshirts by John Scalzi
I'd love to see Tom tackle Stargate SG-1. It's so Star Trek'y in overall design(Exploration, cultures, commentary on shit), but set in modern times so we also get things like government dickbags/etc. Plus guaranteed action~
I hate these obnoxious Star Trek fans ruining it for Tom, the ENTIRE POINT of Star Trek is how inclusive it is to everyone, and anyone can find something they like about it, there’s no such thing as a perfect episode of anything
After listening to them talk about the holodeck episode with Data. I was just thinking well Tom sure needs watch The Orville episode with the virus that is downloaded from porn on the holodeck.
Eureka, Farscape, Warehouse 13, Stargate SG-1 All pretty fun shows. Librarians too, has a similar feel to Warehouse 13. Leverage if you love Heist movies and also social commentary.
Them talking about their clothes fitting perfectly while literally looking at an image of them all wearing completely oversized clothes... okay so the picture isn't great but you can clearly see Ro's sleeves are massively too long
Inner Light is in my top 5 TNG episodes, but it's definitely nowhere near the best episode (In my opinion, either 'I, Borg' or 'The Measure of A Man'.) or the best episode of all of television.
If the transporter auto tailors for you it really does make Garak more of a tragic character, all he's got is his tailors shop and he doesn't even really like it
I'm with him. I saw that episode early this year and was SURE that had to be one of the worst rated episodes of all time. Was speechless when I saw the reviews of it.
Flute episode PALES in comparison to Chain of Command 1 & 2. Patrick Stewart sells being tortured by the Cardassian’s and also it really shows you the nitty gritty of the politics Star Fleet has do deal with.
i mean, love these guys, and this "series" especially, but it is a bit weird to shit on pioneering innovators pretty much mostly just because they've been imitated so many times and influenced art so pervasively that the original premise feels overdone to you decades later.....) but at least they def still appreciate plenty of them, and it's always beautiful to watch a complete virgin explore such a fundamental masterpiece for the first time and see such wildly removed perspectives.....)
Thank fuck Tom did not cave and held his ground on the most overrated Episode in Star trek, perhaps the most overrated Episode of all of television. Ben nailed it with saying it's a good episode, but it's not even the best TNG episode.
You know it's funny, for the first segment I think both of them are just off the mark completely, best episode of tv is not a good leg to stand on.... But there is also the fact that Tom is a self confessed emotionless golem and so the buildup for it is more gradual, whereas he likes the upfront in your faceness of the Rick and Morty version while most enjoy the more subtle realization and somber air that Picard gives Tl Dr, Comments overblow thing but Tom also has the emotion comprehension of a potted plant
