I originally planned to have this review up for my birthday (Nov. 10), but production took longer than I thought it would. Regardless, it's time to take a look at the latest game in the Call of Duty series and the series' return to World War II.
ESRB Rating: Mature (17+) - Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language
The game is available on Steam here: store.steampowe...
Thanks to Garuu for the score card! Also thanks to 17kyle1 for sending me a copy of the game to take a look at.

you only need one thing to enjoy the story, you just need to be 14y old and if you find the gameplay too difficult, just sprint throught the levels to the checkpoint triggers, enemies will suddenly die or retreat and all allies will regroup at your location, no need to shoot (no really that's how this shit works)

While i don't particularly hate this but the game feel incredibly dated. It a 2003 game with a skin of a 2017 game. The story and character is so boring and generic it's funny, i was bust into laughing when the French lady told the protagonist of how nazis kill her family because of how bad the the dialogue was. The only purpose the story exist is to string a bunch of levels together in a WW2 theme shooter. So that leave us with the gameplay which just bog standard military shooter so basic all the features can be done in a ps2 machine. If their intention is to replicate the feel of a 15 years old game, they are succeeded.

Well CoD's overwhelmingly underage audience is too young to really remember the early 2000s so going back to WWII may very well work on them for all I know.

Fitzy When I was experiencing that scene for the first time, my thought was "this shit is set in ww2 right?" Because this Daniel guy didn't even get hurt once ONCE. And don't even get me started with how that one poorly voiced French woman just causally walks into frame amongst all of the destruction and chaos just be like "sup". After that I just had to pause the game and reflect upon what I just experienced by talking to myself.

Honestly, I just find World War 2 shooters to be repetitive as hell and I'm sick and tired of people praising this as some kind of "change" for the franchise. I mean, _why_ couldn't they tackle the Vietnam War or even the Korean War? The game itself sucks as well. And before you ask, I happen like quite a bit of Call of Duty, just in case people accuse me of being a hater. My problem with this game in particular is the oversimplified and streamlined multiplayer loadouts, the loot packs (because of course, every FPS has to have one these days), the constant loading to start up the damn thing, the Headquarters Mode (hub area) being complete nonsense, having pointless token characters added in just to feel "inclusive" (despite not having any real screentime and making them completely one-note), the story mode is neutered so as to "not offend anybody" or some BS like that, the framerate is all over the place, the bullshit insta-death moments in the campaign, etc. For all the shit Advanced Warfare and Infinite Warfare have gotten, at least they offer something interesting. This just feels dull.

Imagine a WWII game, where you can play as a soldier from "evil" side: Italian, German, Japanese, that would be interesting. To see a war from different perspective but ultimately with same individual goal. That is, survive the goddam war and return to your family (if alive). Imagine play as female Polish medic on frontline. Or maybe as one of czechoslovak conscript, involuntarily fighting in wermacht uniform. What about Franch resistance? Better yet, imagine this like interactive war story where you can develop your character via dialogue tree, making decisions, which can kill your squadmates or a friend. Making your ways in hell always different. Cinematic third person WWII game with heavy emphasis on story and characters. That would be something. It can be created, with respect to this event and its history and without bias. But as you said... nobody will (probably) ever do that for in this day and age people are oversensitive, ignorant pussies who cant take a joke, let alone accept "fight" aginst their so called ideology. Shooting american soldier with a context in? Soo evil!! By the way happy (late) birthday.
@DWTerminator
@DWTerminator 6 лет назад
Frankly any of those ideas you mention would be infinitely more interesting than (insert American campaign here). Sadly we'll never get one.
@alerommel1
@alerommel1 6 лет назад
You know what would be interesting, regarding choices? When you carry your injured friend (Zussman ?) in Call of Duty WWII, and you have to defend him from enemies. At the end of the section, make your friend need a medkit in order to survive. If the player used all of his medkits when defending him, then your friend dies. If you spared at least one, then your friend lives. And you can have many sections like this, where your options affect the outcome. Instead everything needed to be 100% scripted.

There is actually a game that has a German/Nazi campaign however it is arma like "Iron Front" store.steampowered.com/app/91330/Iron_Front_Digital_War_Edition/ They even speak German and you can enable subtitles or just have them speak in English which is boring.

Unfortunately Nazi Germans are portrayed in media as the most evil humans in history so much that is pretty much impossible to have a Nazi campaign. Just look at the Wolfenstein games as the Germans are demonized (still love all the games though).

Ahhh United Offensive, still the best CoD ever made in my eyes. Edit: Also about the PPSh, the Germans did use them in pretty high numbers (for what they could capture) and Mauser pistol caliber ammo did work with the gun but again that was ONLY on the eastern front. So yeah they fucked up. Plus the PPSh DOESN'T have a mag well from the PPS42/43.

I was never really hyped for this game, anyway. I was honestly more interested in the stand-alone remaster of the original Modern Warfare.
@hestiacranel326
@hestiacranel326 6 лет назад
Honestly, I find this game pretty underwhelming. I mean, for all the vitriol Infinite Warfare got, it at least offered something different. (Well, different for CoD, at least) WWII just checks all the boxes of World War 2 shooter clichés, therefore offering nothing interesting or original whatsoever, apart from the neutered vague references to Nazis in an attempt to "not offend anyone," which is ironic given how insulting the campaign really is to the history of World War II. It also doesn't help that the campaign has lazy difficulty curves, such as bullet-sponge enemies and out-of-nowhere instadeath moments that happen throughout. The multiplayer is also a letdown, with streamlined customization, simplified map layout, baffling amount of anachronistic/out-of-region firearms included, the inclusion of loot boxes, etc. The Zombies Mode might've been the one saving grace of this game, but why would I bother when it's been done so much better in the Black Ops games. I dunno, it just didn't satisfy me in the long run. I'm not a big Call of Duty fan, but I did enjoy a lot of entries in the franchise. This is not one of them. This game let me down in a lot of ways. I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed. And that's the worst possible feeling I could get out of a game.

Finally someone that mentions how weapons reload animations are garbage. I don't care how nitpicking it could be but see a 5 clip string inserted in the rifle when you still got 2 shots it's just utterly awful. Not to mention the reload with a scoped rifle I mean the thing it's simple: why Treyarch did it good 10 years ago but Sledgy Games seems like they can't really figure it out how to proper depict WWII weapons...

I feel like the game already stumbles into the Clean Wehrmacht fallacy because of its attempts to appeal to German audiences. Having the player play as the Wermacht in the campaign could be interesting if they presented their war crimes in a mature, intelligent way or reveled in the meth-infused insanity that was the Third Reich's infrastructure, but that kind of subtlety is miles ahead of anything Call of Duty's writers are capable of. Also playing as the Wermacht gives this generation's edgy, nazi teen demographic another game besides Warthunder or Red Orchestra to roleplay in. Regardless, there are definitely settings in World War 2 that have never been touched before if there isn't a famous, highly recognized World War 2 movie like Saving Private Ryan, Enemy at the Gates or Band of Brothers made out of them. Playing as the Chinese, Filipinos, any number of European resistance groups, Korean independence fighters, or the Finns would all be novel and interesting, and there's also still a ton that can be done with the Russian front. The problem is all these developers watch the same, couple WW2 movies and HBO series and thus get trapped in the same cliches and tired, old gameplay motifs. Far be it for someone to actually read one of the millions of unique, fascinating stories from that time period and make a game out of that.
@DWTerminator
@DWTerminator 6 лет назад
The Winter War would be amusing. You'd end up with a lot of people complaining that it's completely over the top or Finnish propaganda... and then it turns out that Finland actually *did* smack the Russians around that badly and those people complaining suddenly find their jaws on the floor.

I'm with you on the fatigue of World War 2 titles. I mean, seriously I've seen dozens upon _hundreds_ of World War 2 games (even more when you add stealth games, RTS titles, third-person shooters, etc) and I find them a lot more repetitive and tiresome than "Call of Duty in space." (despite the fact there are like 5 games with that setting) Hell, even Battlefield V is revealed to set in World War 2, but I honestly don't want to open up that can of worms... Bottom Line, World War 2 games to me are about as repetitive and tiresome as zombie games. But at least those offer up some semblance of variety to them, World War 2 games basically play out the same way.
@zuufettegt133

I am the opposite. I am that person that owns every WWII game, regardless of quality, every tv show, book, movie, and everything else, and still can't get enough. I don't know what it is about WWII, but something about it just grabs my attention. I have spent years of life studying various aspects of it, and I still find and learn new things all of the time. Where this game may lack in some areas, I find an outlet to dig through the development of the game and the game itself to find some scraps of information that send me on another research binge to learn more. That is just me, though, and I am the exception to the rule. Many bad games can still be good for a single afternoon, and they can be important to seeing what does work, doesn't work, or just needs different/better execution.

You're the first reviewer to ever even mention the idea of playing as the Germans, as far as I know. Tip to the hat. I am extremely impressed by your work but cannot fathom why you have "only" 11K subscribers. I guess it's your critical approach, a glossy, nice & rosy review surely attracted a larger crowd. Nonetheless, I imagine that you critique the games out "of love", to really better them and to make gaming an enjoyable experience according to your taste which is perfectly fine.

I picked up this game on Steam, and imo the Zombies is the best part. It's the most fun I had. Online multiplayer is dead except for TDM. It may be simplistic, but it's honestly more fun and satisfying than the newer games since 2019. Nothing special or new there. Well there was War mode when it was populated, but even that is underwhelming so I didn't miss much. Campaign very much feels like trying to ape the familiar tropes of WW2 games but without understanding why they worked. The graphics, writing, and voice acting are all top notch, but some things just don't work. The medkits don't feel like medkits because you don't walk into them and instantly use them; rather they feel like regenerating health, but you have to remember to press the "regenerate health" key and the "give me a medpack, buddy" key constantly which break up the pacing of gameplay. Then they have no crosshairs but they do have hit markers on every difficulty besides Veteran. What's worse is you can disable it in settings, but disabling it doesn't even do anything. It's a feature but completely broken. The guns look so good, but feel very historically inaccurate with Russian PPSH's on Omaha Beach during D-Day, and the way the M1 Garand reloads is wrong. The game just feels too much like a movie, and I find myself feeling like the older games this one is recreating just did it better.

The only thing that a WWII game hasn’t done before, is a Black Ops style WWII game, where it doesn’t take it serious. Instead of going to the beach in Omaha, we go to some other missions from the OSS. They should have Treyarch to develop the game to make it a Black Ops game, especially the fact that they add the zombie mode. What we have here instead is basically a reboot of a Medal of Honor game.

I disagree that a World War 2 game can't feel fresh or have an identity apart from other World War 2 shooters, but I agree that this one failed... MISERABLY at that. Even the title knows it. They couldn't even think of a more creative name to fool people into thinking this was a somewhat original game. The game is so focused on being a WW2 shooter that it doesn't allow itself to have an identity apart from that, and can't help but shove WW2 cliches in our face at every turn. If you have played any WW2 shooters before this, this game will likely teach you nothing, or provide any distinct or memorable experiences. Gee, sure is great to storm the beaches of Normandy for the hundredth fucking time. This game lacks respect for the war itself and feels way more fantasy esque and Hollywood than any of the previous WW2 Call of Duty games, and is nothing but a greatest hits pack of generic WW2 cliches. I was really excited for this game. I'm a huge fan and defender of the WW2 setting. This game could have been great. But it wasn't, and you highlighted why pretty well in this video. Good work.

The Wehrmacht actually did capture loads of Russian weapons, rechamberedr them in 9mm parabellum, and used them on the western front. There’s historical precedence for that. Idk about the waffe 28 tho, I thought that was a law enforcement weapons

So if it's Sledgehammer and Treyarch making COD games...what happened to Infinity Ward?!?!?!
@DWTerminator
@DWTerminator 6 лет назад
They're still in the rotation. Their last game was Infinite Warfare, and with Treyarch doing this year's CoD game, their next one will be next year's CoD.

Yeah, I've read in a magazine that Activision switches between Infinity Ward/Treyarch/Sledgehammer in sequential years.

There are other games are insulting to WWII before CoD WWII came out. According to DWTerminator's MTO video, he said that Company of Heroes 2 is insulting to the Eastern Front. I had some fun playing CoH 2 multiplayer and bits of the camapign.

So the story is basically a Michael Bay movie. Btw any good WWII shooters that have great stories?
@DWTerminator

That have great stories? No. But Call of Duty 1, United Offensive, and 2 all tried (successfully) to treat WWII with respect while still being really good FPS's.

It's not just the older games not being as pretty, recall that a lot of gamers playing this will be 12-14 years old and thus won't have been overexposed to the subgenre. Us gamers who are older tend to neglect younger generations in that regard, for whom a PS4 or XBox One may be their first console.
@DWTerminator
@DWTerminator 6 лет назад
And as I've said several times... there's really nothing stopping people from picking up older games and playing them.
@jakerockznoodles
@jakerockznoodles 6 лет назад
DWTerminator That's not the point. The point is that these games are new to somebody, which gives them a reason to exist.

Ignorance is no excuse.
@jakerockznoodles
@jakerockznoodles 6 лет назад
What on earth are you on about? The point is: company announces WW2 game. Casual kid gamer knows these games have existed before, but are they going to go out of their way to buy an old console and games? No, they'll think "Oh, that's cool. I can play a WW2 game on that thing that I own." Again, not everyone is an adult "hardcore" gamer. Casual gamers, especially those who are children, are going to buy (or really get their parents to buy) things for the things they own. It's basically almost the ENTIRE idea behind why remasters exist.
@DWTerminator
@DWTerminator 6 лет назад
Most younger people have absolutely no interest in WWII (or just history in general, for that matter) so I'm not really sure where you're getting that. They just see "Call of Duty" on the box and by association want "the big game for the year." Casual gamers are pretty much the same way. That said... go out of your way to buy an old console and games? With the internet, the entirety of gaming a Google search away. You can buy a used PS2 for $50 (usually less), then snag a couple of the old console Medal of Honor or Call of Duty games for about $5 a piece or less, and you're still more cost-effective than what you get if you buy a new copy of Call of Duty: WWII at $60 US. Hell you're even playing better games than this piece of trash while you're at it. Despite what many think, video games really aren't "disposable." They don't have an "expiration date" unless you're talking about multiplayer games whose communities die out or online-only games whose servers are shut down. Hence, ignorance is no excuse. There's really nothing stopping people from going out and playing most older games anymore. There are certainly a few exceptions here and there (ie. particularly rare or expensive games or stuff on faulty hardware like the Jaguar CD), but for WWII games in particular there are simply so many out there and that are so readily available that there's really no way you can claim ignorance of older games. To not know about the WWII Call of Duty or Medal of Honor games is basically saying you're either so young you probably shouldn't be playing those kinds of games in the first place (the last WWII MoH game was released in 2007... that would make those people are 11 or under), or you've been living under a rock for the past nearly 20 years.

To have a WWII campaign that feels different without playing axis (personally I couldn't care less), they could simply let us play in some other theater aside from north-western Europe - it's actually as simple as that. Imagine an American campaign starting in Salerno (or during the bloody battle of Rapido river, if you need an obligatory D-Day massacre style level) and ending in Rome; a British campaign set in Burma - the desperate retreats in 1942, then the Wingate expeditions, the battles of Imphal and Kohima...you would also be able to interact with Gurkhas, Chinese and Indians; and a soviet campaign set in...well, whichever battle you want aside from Stalingrad and Berlin. You could be playing as one of the 800.000 women that ACTUALLY served in the Red Army - a sniper, like in a older Call of Duty, or a tanker? How good would be that, to have a game that ticking all the obligatory boxes without sacrificing historical accuracy, set in a WWII scenery that feels fresh. And these are just three examples. Anyway, happy birthday man. You destroyed most of my favourite games, but it's good fun the hear you do that. Still waiting for that Hidden and Dangerous 2 review, anyway. That is a WWII game with a pretty original and varied campaign, by the way.

How are they getting these Russian weapons? There's no way they should have access to those. And what is that Thompson model?! The US Army did not use the original production model of the Thompson, they used the streamlined M1 and M1A1 models, because the originals were too heavy and had reliability issues.

I would argue non-regenerating health and one hit kills have their place in a "serious" war game (not to give this game too much credit), because that's more or less what happens in real life. It can be used as a rhetorical device to physically demonstrate to the players the insanity of the situation, a humbling gameplay motif that makes one appreciate that real people survived these situations. That's part of why I really appreciate the original Call of Duty (and UO) on Veteran. Now the problem as mentioned is that the levels are designed like every other bumblefuck modern COD campaign and not with these mechanics in mind. A game where you switch through the perspectives of your squad members and have them permanently die a la Rainbow Six 3 or that one level in BF1 with these mechanics would be much more effective.

What really kills this game for me is how disingenuous it feels. This game felt more like feedback to the negative reaction to Infinite Warfare (which wasn't that bad, in my opinion. But I digress), and basically made this to pander to the the old-school crowd, by being as derivative as possible, with no real identity whatsoever. Even the title feels generic and homagenized.
