@jenniferPhelps Trying to fully understand, as I have seen Orwell interpreted multiple ways. To me, Orwell's writings are a critique of the Soviet structure under Stalin, perhaps Putin, and "to me" equate to Donald Trump ... and Totalitarianism ... I hope that was a warning against Totalianarism (Putin, Trump, DeSantis, Netanyahu etc.)

Hey Jenna Great update - Thank you! Yep lost all my cukes last year from wilt due to beetles...fingers crossed so far this year all good. And Yes I discovered the same issue with the plastic rabbit proof fencing...they chew through it with vigor! I amused one of my neighbour's this morning chasing a bunny round and round the garden beating on my harvesting pan to scare him. Then I noticed someone laughing at me...my neighbour and good friend Terry. It gets even better when I am chasing down cabbage moths with an old tennis racket. Seems like I have found a purpose in life - entertainment for the neighbour's! Glad it brings a smile for them....😁 Thanks again and have a great day! Mike 🇨🇦🍁

Surround WP kaolin clay has been very effective for cucumber pests for me here in north east Ohio. Just mix in a sprayer and keep it applied to the plants and the soil adjacent to the stem. This along with a trap crop outside of the garden may help you out.

To address your problem with cucumber beetles, take Habanero Peppers and reduce them to a thin purée. Use this as a base for an organic insecticide - you can also add other plants that have an insecticidal effect. Add some vegetable oil or dish soap to help the insecticide adhere to the plants. Do not spray on flowers or buds. This worked well for me.

Great video! FYI, do your research on adding sand to clay. Sand, clay, and water are the ingredients for concrete. People use this combination to make cob for earthen houses.
@GrowfullywithJenna
@GrowfullywithJenna 3 года назад
Thanks, Jennifer. I actually advise against adding sand in the video I mentioned (the improving clay soil video) for this exact reason! I was shocked by the number of folks who said I was wrong. I have learned that there are different types of sand, and while you definitely don't want to be adding 'playground' sand to your soil, there are some types that might be ok... I'm dubious, but I just have to sate my curiosity. So I'm going to try to get a hold of 'horticultural' sand. We'll see how it goes. Worst case scenario, I'm only adding it to a small strip of my soil!
@Beaguins

Concrete needs lime and cob needs a binder like straw. Some people really do have success adding sand to clay to make softer soil

@Hosemastenbrook
@Hosemastenbrook 3 года назад
@@GrowfullywithJenna it’s surprisingly tasty. I just eat the berries raw. When they’re deep red, almost purple, straddle the stalk at the base with your forefinger and middle finger, grasp gently and slide your hand to the tip. They’ll all pop off into your hand. They taste like sweet, earthy spinach. Maybe spinach/strawberry/beet is the best way to describe it. The leaves can be used any way you would use spinach. Love the shirt. Had to subscribe for the amazing garden 💯 I left onions out with kale, no protection. They went through heavy snows n all., I had delicious kale , but the onions stayed small. They survived though

It's looking amazing! The soil amendments experiment will be interesting. I'm in the same boat with clay here in the pacific northwest. My tomatoes are catching up to yours even tho I started them as seed a month later than you. June started cooler than late May with plenty of cold rain (lost 2 melon plants and 2 cucumbers to rot) then ended with 2 days of all time record highs. Officially we got to 102 and then 115 for two days after that! My blueberries lost leaves and the bulk of the fruit shriveled up. Everything else ok. Remaining melons are loving it as I was sure to water them many times during the heat of the day. The neighbors 4 year old fig tree is also very happy and looks to produce about a gallon of fruit. All in all looks promising this year!

@GrowfullywithJenna 3 года назад
That heat is just crazy- it's shocking what you are dealing with! Glad to hear most of your stuff made it through. Your comment about the tomatoes just serves to solidify my theory that I could start them even later... I'm doing that next year! I enjoy hearing updates on your garden, thanks for sharing!

@@GrowfullywithJenna Just did a quick cell phone video of my garden. Sweet 100 cherry tomato is all over the place and I already pruned it once. Zucchini is huge and I didn't even have energy to put neem on it this year. Acorn squash lost a couple leaves to something overnight, gee what could it be after all that heat and heavy watering???

Wow, just found your channel. I am also a zone 6, very tippy top of NJ (the nice part!!! lol) Can I be your best friend? So many great things growing in your garden, and your parents also. I long for a garden that size. I live on a lake, and use every inch of my 3/4 acre property. Lots of great information in here, especially the raz mataz grapes, would love to try them in a pot. Thanks for your videos.

Hello and welcome, Trudy! I love hearing from fellow Zone 6 gardeners, and while I do feel fortunate having plenty of space to grow, I love when folks utilize every inch of their space to garden- I'm sure your property is amazing!

I really like your video. You inspire me. I live in blackburg, Virginia in the 6b zone. It was kind of hard for me to decide what to grow for my family. We are renter. I have issue with slug,earwick(I think that what they call them) I called them cockrouches of the north. 😝 infestation. They make my skin crawl 😩 😆

Try Spinosad for cucumber beetles if pyrethrin does not work. It's more "natural" too.

I’ve been plagued with 3-lined potato beetles (basically cucumber beetles) and I started spraying with Monterey Garden Insect Spray. It knocked them back really well. I’ll still see one or two but they were absolutely infested before I started spraying. And their little gooey booger larvae that was all over the place has disappeared.
