BTW, I finally got my own studio up and running in a new house (replacing the one lost in a wildfire). I am posting new compositions on my YT channel. Now that you’ve spent some time with the S-4, how would you say the workflow is for long form ambient (especially versus a Digitakt 2 like I was asking about in our previous thread). Is it limiting that the S-4 only has 4 tracks?

The workflow for longform ambient is going to be a lot better on the S-4, since it has a very capable looper on each track, that can record very long (though I'm having some issues with setting length at the moment) recordings with a the ability to overdub and crossfade start and end points, which is crucial for really nice seamless looping. Digitakt II isn't really made for this, and seamless looping is going to be a bit tricky if not impossible I think, unless you make your loops in the DAW first and then import them. The Digitakt II makes up for this with an amazing sequencer that you can use to create complete tracks, including generative ambient completely on the device, so you don't really need to sample seamless loops, but you do need good samples to begin with (or just use the factory stuf, but I have absolutely no idea what the factory library is like and I'll probably never use those samples). S-4 is just a really nice sample playground, for recording/looping on the fly with a synth connected and just building really nice ambient that way. The included live granular device is great as are the other FX for filter, noise/drive section and delay/reverb (both pretty nice sounding). It is early firmware though and is missing features that are due to come in the future, it also has some bugs which need to be sorted. it's really hard to compare these devices, sure they're both samplers and can play back full stereo high quality samples, but they work very differently. Digitakt II should really be thought of as a synth/sampler/sequencer where you build the entire track in the machine and the S-4 more of as a live performance sampler/playground for making ambient textures/soundscsapes. There's also the Tasty Chips MegaGR coming too, which will be more similar to the S-4 in workflow I think. The 4 tracks on the S-4 didn't seem limiting to me, I was often only even using 2 tracks at a time and they were plenty dense enough, since you can overdub over tracks as much as you like, you could even just use 1 track. The way I used the S-4 here, is the same way I've done some live looping/soundscapes in the past using a synth, FX unit, and a single DittoX4 looper (it has 2 loop recorders). So if you're looking for something even more affordable, but similar workflow to the S-4 without the bells and whistles of the granular, filter etc sections, a single DittoX4 is one of my favourite ways to make this kind of music.
