Hi Sir, you said if the major axis is designed as moment connection, when we consider the longitudinal force, we can only design it as pin connection at the minor axis side, I.e. only axial force will be transferred to the bracing. Could we also design it as moment connection in the minor axis side or we don't do it just because it is not effective for taking the moment in minor axis? Thank you!
@TonmoyMaity
@TonmoyMaity Год назад
You are right. About Minor axis, member has very nominal moment carrying capacity. Thus we ignore it.

Can you have a braced frame system in both directions (transverse and longitudinal)?
@TonmoyMaity
@TonmoyMaity 4 месяца назад
why not
@Civillivic
@Civillivic Год назад
Sir when we assign a rod section for bracing members so then why we are assign only as a compression not a tension members ??
@TonmoyMaity
@TonmoyMaity Год назад
I think you have reverse it..we design to carry tension not compression..simply because of the buckling failure of rod under compressive load.

Tonmoy - the lateral action would go along the strut (which is purposely designed for the comp force) to the very last column then the force would engage the vertical diagonal bracing as a tensile component (which is good in tension). Don't think it would be as efficient to have the vertical bracing in compression as you explained .... and technically it's not a right of doing things. Same deal with the struts in the roof plane, where the lateral force would travel along the struts in comp and then engage the bracing in tension until it gets to the corner of the building then again travels along the vertical bracing in the form of tensile force then resolved at the footing level.

How the lateral loads will be transferred if there is no plan bracing?

Sir i have asked for Ly, unt, unb etc., Parameters long back ago... kindly do a video on that please
@Civillivic
@Civillivic Год назад
Ly which means longitudinal length of minor axis of specified element's like columns Say If you have a column of 10 m length in both directions like major and minor axis .. So then your lz is 10m and ly is 10m

@TonmoyMaity

That's for sake of discussion..you can arrange bracing in such a way to transfer the lateral load properly 🙏

Your description of lateral load transfer around timestamp (5:48) is not correct. If you consider a cross bracing (X-brace), the predominant force transfer would be the tensile behavior. Please do correct it. And once again, please do make videos only on your area of expertise. Kindly check the structural behavior with a proper analysis model, before you teach someone else.
@TonmoyMaity
@TonmoyMaity Год назад
Right You are correct. Now construct an x bracing and make tensile member by cotton thread and compressive member by steel section. I hope still tensile force is predominant 😊
@parishithjayan
@parishithjayan Год назад
@@TonmoyMaity If this is a sarcastic reply, then in no building we r going to use a rod bracing for tensile member and tubular steel member for compressive member.. U better try using two tubular bracing member and see, which member is taking more load.. Then u might come to a conclusion.
@TonmoyMaity
@TonmoyMaity Год назад
@@parishithjayan Dear , for analysis purpose we assume it take only tension as x bracing is indeterminate structure. But it doesn't mean tensile force is predominant. From classroom to every book this assumption is taught. But in reality compression force is equally predominant provided it is not slender. Now , as a practitioner I have shared my view only. You are completely free to use your judgement too. But , kindly don't lebel anything as incorrect in engineering as this is a subject where we are still baby😜

Dear @@TonmoyMaity , As you have rightfully mentioned, i apologize for labelling the concept that u explained as incorrect. My only concern is to support each of our understanding with a proper analysis report. So that, the content which we are sharing would benefit the user for the best. I have seen most of ur videos.. they are really good and sharing knowledge.. And i could spot small misconceptions here and there.. If my comments or criticism hurts ur feelings . Really sorry for that.. Take it in a good way. There has to be someone who is pointing out our mistakes.. I would be glad if u could do the same for me.. And nice having a conversation with you Mr. Tonmoy Maity
