This week I wanted to do an updated walk-around of my Woodland Scenics Grand Valley Layout since it's been a while, and I've been doing a lot of side jobs and not really focusing on the layout itself. I also wanted to give a brief channel overview of what we're all about and the direction we're going with the channel. Basically, we're focusing on the smaller layout, we go through mods, operations, weathering rolling stock, adding electronics and all of the incidentals that come up when building, updating and modifying, and especially having FUN with smaller layouts.
Thanks to everyone for buying their DGVRR merch! Want some too? Get it right here:

As always thanks for sharing. I wife teases me about having back stories about the figures, and buildings on the layout. I see I'm not alone in that.

You've come quite far with your model railroad. I hope I am just as lucky with mine. For now, all I have is the basic components for building my (future) Carolina Central.

Thank you very much Donnie! I bet yours is coming along super well! I look forward to seeing it possibly in the future when you get further along. Thank you so much for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it.

@@DansGrandValley I haven't built anything yet sadly - not even the benches work. Space is limited as I'm temporarily staying with a friend. I'm just waiting on terminal rail joiners for my NCE Power Cab to test out sound system pre-installed in my EMD GP9. After I make a little video of that, I'll start super-detailing the locomotive.

Hey Dan.....really good video. You've been an inspiration ever since I started building my GVR. Sometimes I get envious of looking at other videos of bigger layouts but as a newbie I'm quite content to putz around and learn from people like yourself. Comments that you've made in your older videos have made me pay more attention to track details and have had to do some replacements due to lack of attention.....live and learn! Boils down to just having fun at your own leisure......thanks again!

Thanks Dunk! Yes I’ve felt envious at times as well looking at some of these grand layouts that people have. But I decided to just embrace what I have and make the most out of my small layout. To be honest with you, it keeps me very busy and I don’t think I could handle a great big layout. Thanks as always for watching my friend and commenting, it is always much appreciated.

Awesome video, Dan. The views around the layout are looking great. You covered everything I could really think of for a really complete layout. I've been playing with my new camera a little bit but I will probably try to put together something like your "starting from scratch" video since I've mostly just taken pictures along the way with my GV build. You are always an inspiration with your layout details, so keep em coming!

Thank you as always Tom! You and the other faithful subscribers are the inspiration that keeps me going. I’m looking forward to your photos and video when it comes. I do enjoy the ones you post on Facebook, your layout is looking tremendous! Your attention to detail is mind blowing, and your GVL is going to be amazing when you get done. Thanks again for watching and commenting, it is very much appreciated sir!

I'm half tempted to get this layout kit and build it for N scale instead of HO.
@DansGrandValley
@DansGrandValley Год назад
Oh that would be really cool! You’d have a lot of leeway to modify it and customize it any way you wanted to. 👍🏼

@@DansGrandValley Ye. As I mentioned on your much more recent 'what I would have done differently' style video, N's smaller trains alleviate a lot of issues in the track plan just by virtue of being so much smaller. I'm thinking my build might not have much civilization in it at all. Very rural, almost like a noteworthy chunk of main line between cities. But I'm not sure yet. A 4x8 plan affords a LOT of real estate for N scale, after all. I was already thinking about flattening some of the grades a bit. Looking at it on WS's website I noticed they include 4% risers for that. With N scale trains being so much shorter 2% risers would be more fitting anyway, and that would also help the locomotives themselves with having to climb the hills with longer trains on.

Hi David, I used Atlas Code 83 manual 18” radius Left #542 and Right #543 switches.

Hey Dan! Question about laying the track before you plaster… My track isn’t really lining up properly on my risers and whatnot…some spots the track goes to the very edge of them. Sometimes I have to use different pieces in spots where I’m getting to the point where the track is ending and meeting up with the “end” of the track. Did you have these issues as well? The first time I set it up I had to extra pieces of track left. This time there were 2. I’m going bananas here…😓😓
@DansGrandValley
@DansGrandValley 2 года назад
Hi John, yes I did have similar issues. My solution was to get a package of assorted small Atlas code 83 track pieces, from 3/4 “ to 2 1/2”. I experimented in areas adding and taking away, and rearranging small sections (especially near and between the two crosses) until I got the track to lay mostly straight between the risers. I didn’t get it perfect but I was able to straighten it out a bit. I’m not sure why that occurs with the kit, but I did have that issue also. Here is a link to Trainworld, the package of assorted pieces that I’m talking about. www.trainworld.com/atlas-524-code-83-straight-track-assortment-2-pieces-each-of-the-following-sections-3-4-1-1-4-1-1-2-2-and-2-1-2-atlas-524.html Hope that helps.

@@DansGrandValley thanks man! Did you start at the bridge and go towards the tunnels or the other way? Or does that even matter?
@DansGrandValley
@DansGrandValley 2 года назад
@@blackthidot I just laid it all out and then adjusted. It doesn’t matter where you start until later, when you lay it down permanently. Then, since the tunnels are done before you close it in, you start from the tunnels and work outward.

How long does this take to set up?
@DansGrandValley
@DansGrandValley 2 года назад
If you have a base ready to go for it, from the time you open the box until you have tracks laid and trains running can be just a matter of a few days depending on how much time you have to spend on it. I took a few months to get to the “finished” stage where I could start adding details and buildings, lights etc. but I was taking it slow and working on it a few days per week. It’s the type thing of thing that is really never finished. You can just keep adding and modifying forever, so it’s a great hobby to keep your interest up for the long haul. Thanks for watching and reaching out. 👍🏼
