I'm from Europe and come often to the States. Every time again I'm shocked about the state of your infrastructure. This bridge with a 70s design, without modern updates like protection is not a thing on it's own. All over the country it's rusty bridges, roads full of potholes, badly patched roads with more bad patches over them, uneven side walks, overgrown sidewalks, fading road markings, wonky and missing signs, broken lights, etc. The States is decades behind on maintenance and updating it's infrastructure to modern standards will probably cost a few trillion dollar, if just rebuilding one bridge is going to cost 1B. And then we're not even talking about the design of the road infrastructure, like junctions or highways, even that is still done like in the 70s.

@@rickymeadows5176 The use of ferries when a bridge has been destroyed, has been done before. In 1975 in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, a ship called the _"Lake Illawarra"_ brought down a section of the bridge over the Derwent River. The offending ship sank, taking many lives with it - not just her crew, but car drivers who were innocently driving over the bridge at the time. My point is, is that the Tasmanian government rounded up ferries from anywhere they could get them, to carry both passengers and road vehicles, with one ferry being the then new _Lady Wakehurst_ from Sydney - nearly 600 miles north of Hobart! Why could the same not be done now? People and goods must get through!

I know what I heard this past week. There are many conflicting reports but your thought that the diesel engines may of had clogged fuel filters is utter nonsense. The ship was having serious electrical problems while docked. Initial reports stated the freezers were tripping the circuit breakers. Why would anyone let this ship destined for a 27 day voyage halfway around the world( SriLanka) if a safety checklist was not followed? What is protocol for ships coming or going out of US ports? What is the responsibility of the harbormaster pilot? Many conflicting questions and points of view. The ship lost all electrical power coincidentally shortly after tugboats'pulled away'... Mayday distress call was made. Bridge was cleared(almost) then ship struck supporting post. Bridge collapsed and was completely fallen in less than a minute. Please explain to me these basic yet conflicting reports I've heard this past week? Where is the extensive investigative report? Ship logs? Black box? Was the pilot impaired?

Do you mean the construction workers who died when the bridge dropped from under them? Sure, every construction worker could wear a super-suit, costing thousands of dollars and causing a heat stroke problem that kills many. It's not that human life is disposable, it's just very hard to do something realistic without causing worse problems, especially for an extreme and rare situation. You're creative. You don't need to protect the whole body, but you could reduce harm to vital organs with a lot less risk of causing worse problems. It starts with identifying common causes of death/injury to workers. Remember, it has to be something they'd be willing to wear, so it has to be practical.

When you say "they", who exactly? The local taxpayers? Americans don't vote for higher taxes. The politicians? The do what what people vote for. The insurance company that's not on the hook for fixing it? Not the way insurance works.

At the moment, the broken pieces of the fallen bridge are more like a cross between a jenga puzzle and a game of 'pick up sticks' where one false move while cutting out a damaged bridge section could result in a further collapse of the already overstressed bridge components! It is without a doubt, a nightmare scenario to tackle even with the help of some of the largest floating cranes available with up to 1000 tons lifting capacity. The weight of each section being removed, must be assessed and a safety margin applied. After all it wouldn't do to have one of the rescue effort cranes be involved in a disaster of it's own during these works. As a Carpenter of 40 years, I can say that building things carries risks, but demolition works is even more risky. You might think that you know how something was built, but then you discover a site specific solution to a construction problem which makes your demolition job even harder. In the case of this bridge, the weather and sea state conditions have been benign, but that won't last for ever, so be prepared for times of little or no progress and pray that everything goes safely. The government will not flip for the bill, Liability will come later. Lost revenue is priority. So many millions of dollars lost. Insurance and or the shipping company will have to be responsible for the cost. Biden made the correct decision to fund the rebuild ASAP..

When a new bridge is constructed surround each pier between which ships pass with what is tantamount to an oval-shaped island of rock and soil about 200 feet long in the direction of travel and 100 feet wide. A coffer dam on the perimeter eases placement and facilitates consolidation of material. A few piles driven into the seabed extending into each mass provides even greater stability. Material for each island dredged from the seabed benefits the channel. Relative to the cost of the bridge this is an inexpensive and effective solution that will prevent piers from being dislodged when bumped by the largest of container ships. The fastest and cheapest way to repair this bridge is to manufacture and replace the collapsed trusses. All of the plans are available. The procedure known. Of course, what results is new, old stock, a fifty year old bridge verging on obsolesce with respect to container ships ability to navigate beneath it.
