Lathe Compound Mods for Multifix Tool Post

I'll share how to properly modify a lathe compound slide for mounting a PeWE Tools Multifix type tool post. According to the inventors of this style of tool post, you need to have the post body pulled down to a solid surface, not over a gap like you typically seen with the wedge styles.

I’ve been a machinist for 18 years and I still love it. That KBC is a really good little mill. Love the videos sir!

Did the KBC sound a little loose somewhere? The piece got tight putting it into the key slot. Think there was movement of the vice?
@Frankodilla
@Frankodilla Год назад
@@rogerscottcathey no it’s not loose just the machine might be slightly tilting with the weight shifting as the table moves if the gibs have any slack. But that machine sounded good. I’d chock it up to the compound having a slight taper in the t slot.

Adam, I found out that my Multifix size E couldn’t stop rotating until I put the dowel pin. I used a M6 stud bolt as a dowel pin, as the fit was really tight and made it removable, which turned out years later to be the salvation for mounting my recently acquired toolpost grinder. Your work quality makes me feel ashamed of mine’s!

Well before decking the top surface of that compound and T- Nut, I would set that compound on your AA Starrett surface plate and run an indicator all over the top side to see if it's parallel with the base.

@patrickl6866 Год назад
Appreciate the good/detailed videos. I went to Walter's site to look at the external threading tool style you were using (vertical insert) and they don't show it as an item they carry. Maybe I just can't find it. Do you have a link for the external threading holder and inserts?

Great video! Interesting point about the 0.003" off parallel. I wonder if the dovetail slides are also off parallel, or if they are true to the bottom. I would have checked that before deciding how to do the top with the new tee nut. I also wonder if this technique might be advantageous when mounting other types of tool posts. I designed my own with a broad, circular base that straddles the slot in the compound but now I am wondering if this mounting technique might make it more rigid.
@chemech
@chemech Год назад
I'm suspecting that the 0.003" [0.0762mm] was well within the manufacturing tolerance for the compound slide housing. that's seldom a truly precision ground surface. I'd be checking the bottom surface of the rotating base first a little bit more for parallelism and flatness, as that's a machined surface and can be slightly out since it wasn't ground. Only after I was sure about the base would I go after the top, checking my setup as I go along. Tolerances stck up (add up) so a couple of items being off by a few 0.0002" or so, plus some gapping, can add up to a couple of mils (thousandths of an inch). Basically, it boils down to how close do you want / need the final result to be, and how much careful attention to detail you are willing to spend to get there.

Hi Adam, great video as per usual. Have you seen these fractal vices? It seems to me this tool would be in demand if someone was making them at a very high level of quality. Adam Savage recently showed one on his channel from China. I thought of your exacting practices with machining and you would be perfect to make one of these thing of the old patent and it make for some great videos.

@@SteveColluns-hm2xx Hi Steve, he actually accomplished what the owner wanted him to do. he fitted a multifix toolpost to the guy's compound. The run out is his problem, maybe the owner should have been notified as to the .003" error, but thats another point, cheers 🙂
@daveharriman2756
@daveharriman2756 Год назад
@@SteveColluns-hm2xx Ok Steve, I'm a retired machine tool fitter, worked for 50 years, If this was my lathe, I would certainly have corrected that error by scraping or whatever. I agree, if I had this job to do, I would have contacted the owner and asked if he wanted it correcting before I proceeded. So I do get you, should have just fixed it to the surface of the compound as it was, now I've had a long think about it. I've only just seen this channel, it came up on my feed, so don't know of his historical work practices, cheers, Dave

Nice video. I'm going to need to do that for a new lathe soon. What size Multifix tool post do you have on that PM 1660-TL lathe you used in the video? I'm about to order the 1640-TL, and it should take the same size. (Unfortunately, PM doesn't have the measurements I need in their manual or on the web site, and I'd like to order the toolpost when I order the lathe rather than waiting until I can measure it.)
