Yes my on my crappy lathe the compound is an optional extra. The tool post mounts directly on the cross slide and gets replaced by the compound which has its own fixed tool holder.

where did such a young person pick up this level of skill? one clue is the phrase "dead nuts" the last time i said that(15-18 yrs ago) i saw a blank stare... thank you Sooo much for keeping this skill alive. the compound is such an under-used asset,

Thank you for sharing the tip for increasing the resolution of the compound dial. My dad was a tool and die maker and he taught me that about 60 years ago. I use it a lot on my old Southbend lathe

The compound on the lathe is a good layout tool too. The face relief angle on most right hand lathe tools is pretty shallow, so setting the compound on a 90 or 45 can give you a good sharp scribe line. Good for crappy castings too to see if the material will clean up.

Well done! Another tip that can be handy to keep markings and compound handles in a convenient front right orientation is to setup your taper cut on the back side of the part and then, of course, run your spindle in reverse to make the cut.

Indeed. There are four orientations of the compound available to cut steep tapers, rather than just the two shown in this clip. I guess it's worth reminding people with screw-on chucks that they cannot safely use two of them (the ones which require reverse spindle rotation), unless they fit a lock of some sort.

@@TandaMadison I forgot to add: for those who can't run in reverse to take advantage of the other quadrants, think about turning the tool upside down and running in fwd. (Tool will need to be "opposite hand", though)

Excellent tips, Quinn! Another reason to set your compound at 180: your precision bench lathe has no lead screw, and your carriage/cross slide is bolted down to the bed. 😉

My old machinist teacher Ken Mayhak (50+ years of Machining), loved the compound, he'd talk about it everyday haha! even told us the 14 degree trick, which i had forgotten until now! we used a similar trick when boring out a nut for our rings! something to do with the threads and material hardness? Can't quite remember everything he told us, but I wish i took notes! Awesome Video and Thanks again for the memories of Machinist class, i need to find an apprenticeship! The 14 degree compound is ancient lore. Some of the old Cincinnati tray top lathes had a detent at 14, 29.5, and 84 degrees (at 84 degrees .001 compound =.0001 cross)

@@DonThomasjrMy retired toolmaker friend made a 1” x 1” block with a sine bar that was 84.29 degrees. Then you hold the square end on the chuck, line up the face of the compound and you nail the 10 thou =1 thou dead on. Fast easy set up and more accurate than a detent.

That was a great and highly informative tour of the compound. Happily added to to my "likes". And particularly with the hints on the reach aspects. It's not just the small lathes that can run into such issues. And consider that even if one does make a solid riser it's not like the compound cannot be swapped in and out as the situation requires. I ran into the same issue with the degree scale not being the full 360. My 12x36 size lathe angle markings only goes around to plus/minus 45 and originally came with only a single "0" hack mark. I added additional hack marks at plus and minus 45 and 90 to the cross slide top. And later on to allow swinging right around as you demonstrated I added more marks at 135 and 180 on the tail stock side. An initial light scratch mark followed by a light tappy-tap-tap with a small purpose ground cheap cold chisel and light hammer finished the very helpful job. At times the work can also be in the way of the proper zero mark too. So having the additional hack marks comes in handy in additional ways.

Well, that's probably what would happen, if Quinn would ever spend a significant amount of time with her woodworker friends. On Android in the app, RU-vid gives categories for the recommended videos. Which were "wood turning" and "wood turning lathe". The bloody axe might explain that.

Don't forget when copying an angle like the morse taper on the lathe centre you need the stylus of the dti to be on the centre height of the angle you are copying. You need to be clocking alo g the maximum diameter of the taper.

Instead of setting your compound at a crazy backwards orientation, spin your lathe backwards and feed on the opposite side you normally would, this is usually only useful for facing and easy to get to work, but it is much easier to feed. I'm somewhat surprised that I've never seen anyone use this method, bit I'm sure people do. Great videos, your steam engine looks like soo much fun.

You do have to be very mindful of how your chuck is mounted before making the decision to run the Lathe backwards to do machining operations. Mine simply screws onto the spindle so if I'm not careful and take too big of a cut running backwards it can unscrew the chuck.

The compound plays an important role in offsetting in X for multi-start threading. After you have mastered single point threading multi-start offers a new level of challenge and entertainment. If your lathe can handle it you can make lead screws with useful pitches greater than 1 inch. Most don't have the gears for absurdly large pitches. If you want to do your own gearing anything is possible. CNC's can do any pitch, Once the pitch gets really big you need to incline the cutter. I have used 9 start lead screws.

another great tip for using the compound for tapers. Use a Boring Bar and turn in reverse on the far side of the part. I use this technique all the time for great taper finishes, and I can keep the boring bar at the same 90Deg angle to the workpiece instead of matching the taper angle. I always finish the diameter in reverse feed also, its just easier to keep it steady

I flip the tool in the holder(or use another tool)and run the spindle in reverse for chamfers. It's less awkward to me. I like to feed with the saddle instead of the crossslide, but meh. to each their own.

Roughly 5.74˚ gets you a tenth of movement (2 tenths off the diameter), which is the version of that trick that I was taught, lo those many moons ago..

Thank You, very informative. I purchased an old Atlas V42 from a gunsmith friend of mine and thought it had everything, until I tried turning a piece of 1" steel rod for a 20 ton press I was building. No Tool Holder! I got around it by using a jerry rigged adaptation but I'm new to using a lathe and you along with mrpete222 AKA tubalcain and some others are going to be very helpful.

That first tip, is quite similar to one I use setting up one side drum sanders. (On these things, the drum is only held by one side, which means you can flip te board around, and sand something twice as wide.) They have a conveyor belt on them, to give the machine a feed mechanism. This belt is a belt of sandpaper. I have to adjust the runout of this belt, to make sure it doesn't run off its settings. I lift up a side of this belt, out a piece of masking tape under it, so one edge goes under the belt at a small angle. I run the conveyor, until the seam is crossing the tape, and make a mark where they cross. (I'm only using the seam, because it won't move. Doesn't matter what the rest of that belt does [within reason] as long as I have a mark on the belt, that doesn't move.) By putting that tape under the belt at a slight angle, 1 MM becomes 10 MM on the edge of that tape. This just opens up the precision of the procedure. steve

It is funny that you expect more accuracy by the compound than the error when using the test indicator to measure it movement. The other thing is to measure an angle with a test indicator like that on a round object you have to be in the exact center for such a small diameter.

Thanks for all the ways to use the compound. I'm not a machinist! But I would hate to give up my compound. But most of the time it is just backed up to no overhang and locked. 1440 lathe. The use of trig can get you very close for angles, tapers. A DRO helps to get quite accurate #s for the trig solutions. Most DROs have trig functions, Machinery Handbook has trig tables. The tables are available online. It works just like your sine bar but with a dial indicator in place of your gage blocks. See Joe Pie's "Setting a Lathe Compound to a Nearly Perfect Angle." Why was every MT a different angle?

Well, my little Sherline doesnt have one, i guess rigidity is a number 1 priority but I will keep this tricks in mind (Or in RU-vid) for when i get a smaller lathe :D Great video as always!

Sherline does have a compound you can add to your lathe if you want it. I suspect the reason it’s not standard has more to do with cost reduction than rigidity since the compound isn’t required for many cuts. But a little extra rigidity is a nice bonus.

Or you can set the compound slide over 6 degrees (actually 5.71 degrees), which gives you a 10:1 reduction on cross-slide movement. A better way top set it up is to use a dial guage to indicate the side of the compound slide, and set the slide so that the dial guage moves 1mm for a 10mm movement of the saddle.

My compound stays on all the time: at this point by necessity because I have added a third DRO axis scale to it. I use it frequently for many of the reasons you mention, but most of the time I keep it parallel to the ways. This is my default because at least on my lathe, dialing in the compound slide lead screw is is much easier to do with precision than moving the entire carriage with a coarse rack and pinion movement.

Neat bit of work on the way cover bunching up problem! Also, if you need to cut a tapir, something like "You have a stupid look on your stupid tapir face" is perhaps inelegant but concise.

I'm too stupid for the math. I use cut and try on my tapers. I should set up my Dremel for grinding them. I too have a crappy Chinese lathe, 9x19 but mine is dirty. Dremel tool holder is my next project. Thanks for the lesson.

In most cases my compound is locked, using most of adjustment skrews together. (Almost all skrews are tightened, except of those which press the thin steel plate to the air.) ; )))

The compound on my small lathe 13x40 is too handy most days to warrant it's removal. Of course I have a bigger heavy lathe if I need to hog off massive amounts of stock. Some people do not have that option. I never thought about that last bit on using the compound ti extend reach. I simply use a left hand boring bar. But I will keep that in mind. Cheers

Just tighten the screws on the side of the compound to eliminate play to get more rigidity. (Best to buy a decent lathe!)

Hey Quinn, have you had any luck in getting the compound on the PM lathe to like, not suck? I have the same lathe as you and love everything about it, except the compound as it's nearly unusable. I haven't looked too far into it, but it seems to be a combination of the gibb and dovetails. Depending on where you are in travel it's either impossible to move, or it's so loose that it wobbles all over the place. I've spent hours trying to adjust it into a sweet spot that unfortunately just doesn't exist. I'm betting you know exactly what I'm talking about. Anyway, I'm gonna tear into soon and would welcome if you had any sage advice. Thanks as always for an awesome video, and all of the things you've taught me in general.

@@Blondihacks yeah that's what I was thinking too. I've never done any scraping before but I did find a scraping tool at the flee market and grabbed it with this in mind. I've also ordered some lapping compound and was thinking that might be a start at smoothing things out a bit at least. I was also wondering if maybe a brass gibb would be a good idea if I'm replacing the gibb anyway. I'll do some work on it soon-"ish" and see where it goes I guess. Thanks again!

Why do compounds have two handles? it's not even a specific brand it just seems to be the way compounds are made. both my lathes (logan and clausing) have it. I don't think it would be that way without a reason I just don't know what it is.

Very large lathes may have a standard single-throw (single handle) crank, as there is room for it and mass/rigidity to resist the side forces when cranked. Smaller lathes don't have the clearance for a large throw, and make up for it with two throws so you can pinch between our fingers and rotate about the center of the screw without side force. On my smallest lathe, I use a two throw crank for the cross slide for this reason.

another trick ive seen is to remove the hole thing rotathe it so it goes up and down and your lathe is now a mill

Just want to chime in as one more machinist that does not understand the fad of removing your compound. It seems nuts to me. Granted I don't have a lightweight Chinese machine, but it is small. But giving up being able to cut tapers? Giving up the 10x accuracy? To me it's like opting to amputate an arm. In all fairness, I have never run one of the harbor freight mini lathes that this is so popular on

Sometimes you'll speak of being able to "intuit" something. As a newbie, my intuition is often wrong, even 180° wrong. Watching you work, hearing the explainations, absorbing your reasoning is developing my intuition. Am beginning to 'see' the next step, or visualize a process, even before ever doing it myself. I know that watching isn't doing, but watching is learning (and often laughing; you've a great sense of humor. Utterly lacking in other videos & much appreciated), and so I wanted to tell you that you are building in us new folk that sense of intuition which appears a valuable tool to have in this lathe quagmire. Good info, well presented as usual. Two more: 1. A variation on the scaling setup is to deal with the imperial-to-metric thingy with appropriate compound slide angles, and 2. Mounting your compound slide on your milling table in various orientations (think angle plates) and the part in the spindle can open possibilities.

@@Henning_S. No way to avoid the calculations... Setting your compound to precisely 11degrees and 18minutes only introduces more calculations.. Don't get that right then 0.01mm per thou on the compound dial goes out the window.

@@Henning_S. Setting by eye is far from "precisely hitting a metric diameter for a bearing"... 12 micron... Is 12 micron. Eye, have a feeling eye could creep up on your metric diameter before you set your compound
