Lathe gouge holders and cheap Cu wire riveting

Another attempt to prove that anything can be made from PVC pipe and copper wiring! This process is mostly useful for Craftsman lathes, but it should work for any lathe that has a metal bar or post in lieu of a flat bed. You could certainly still adapt these tool clips to that style of bed, so please keep that in mind before complaining about how useless this is. Remember: the ideas I present were never meant to be universal; they were only ever intended to help you consider new ways to approach your own problems. This was just a demonstration to help you get ideas ;)

The following is an explanation of the still frame, since I blatantly favor the literate: it's the island from 'Broken Saints.' You probably have not heard of it, but if you're in the mood for a relaxed, musical, and somewhat creepy contemplative visual experience, you should investigate it. Brooke Burgess, the creator, has a RU-vid channel where you can sample it. However, I would suggest just buying the DVD set since its obscurity keeps the price so abnormally low (Ollie's has it for $4). Without hesitation I'm recommending it, especially to those in search of less trite media. To me, it captures the feel of that time right after the turn of the millennium, where and when we were so uncertain about the newly severed connection to American exceptionalism. I started to become an adult there, and Burgess' work captures that confusion in a way that was somber, smart, poetic, and careful. Watch it in the dark. v=JxE9EODS588

This is a fantastic method for making rivets! I often struggle with a way to fasten two thin pieces of material when screws won't work

Thanks! You can use this idea for all sorts of materials: leather, plastic, fabric, metals, et cetera.

I love the copper wire rivet method! One thing that I've done with great success - add a bit of a countersink, and then a groove (or any pattern of channel) coming off the hole. When you thread the copper wire through the hole, thread enough to also fill the groove. It makes incredible ornamental joinery.

the live center cap is an awesome idea, I've lost count of the number of times I've caught my elbow while bowl turning!

Ouch. I've always been careful with that. Pulling off a stuck chuck could put you in emergency surgery.

If there was ever a good reason to have a single tube lathe, those holders would certainly be it! I'll have to see if I can adapt this idea to a lathe bed with two ways... I love the copper rivet idea. So simple, and equally effective! (not to mention aesthetically pleasing)

This is something i've done before, not just with copper wire, but with aluminium rod, if you want a stronger joint, countersink the holes first, the rod will have a place to expand.

83 is also the atomic number of bismuth, which is possibly the coolest element. It has some really interesting properties, like being able to form perfectly square crystals (in rainbow colours!) if you do it right, and is the heaviest non-radioactive element.

The copper wire trick is nice... copper work hardens too, so it probably holds even better than just the little forming would make you think.

Hi pocket, try filing the ends of the wire flat first, it only takes a few seconds and it would make for rivet heads closer to a circular rather than irregular shape. Then place the wire in a vise sticking out 1/16 or so, and with a hammer form the head of the rivet ahead of time, you'll have more control over it. Then use it normally as you do in the video, with the head at the bottom against your steel cylinder.

Keep your PVC cement stored upside down. Works well. Irrigation friend told me that tip.

a small countersink in the steel rod might help with the initial hammer strikes.
@kleinjahr

Much the same can be done with a nail, good for heavier stuff. If you drill a divot, depth of the drill point in the backer, it will help form the end of the rivet.

You can also a small ballpeen hammer to rivet over the ends of the wire. One less tool, might be easier.

I wish I had a ballpeen hammer. I do have some hammers that are so old I've rounded them, so I get away without having one.

pvc cement is basically pvc in a solvent, usually a ketone like acetone or butanone (more expensive but works best) - just ad new liquid and let it sit overnight works with abs cement too, here you can even use the cheap acetone with no worries

Very awesome! Thanks for sharing Mr Pockets! I was wondering, would a small countersink in the holes (very small I admit, considering the thickness of the pvc pipe once sanded flat) give a nice area for the rivets to mushroom into? Maybe it's not needed though, it already seems like a very robust system without.
@pocket83
@pocket83 7 лет назад

Awesome video, Pocket! You consistently blow my mind with your creativity and ingenuity. Thank you for sharing! Has any silly troll calculated the cost per rivet since it's Cu (assuming you don't have spare Romex in your shop)? ;P
@pocket83
@pocket83 7 лет назад
250' is 60$. Three strands makes it 750' per roll. 60/750= 0.08 per foot. 24 rivets per foot means 0.00333... per rivet ;)

do you heat these clips and allow them to cool around the tools or is it just a case of finding the right diameter pipe?

pocket83 but that'd be like hammering in a finishing nail. It'd keep going down until you lose it.
@pocket83
@pocket83 7 лет назад
Not exactly. I mean, it could- but the hole is undersized, and copper wire is very soft. Thus, it starts to flatten out a little right as it starts to go down. With practice, it works well.
