Lathe restoration. Simple lathe stand.

Continuing to develop my skills, I decided to buy a small lathe for metal work.
I was lucky, this turning machine (TV-4 model) I found on internet and
the location was not far from my home.
This lathe was produced in Soviet union in 1974 and it still works.
I'll do some restoration work.
Thanks for watching.

Most comments seemed to slam this guy pretty hard but had you read the description, he is working on his skills. This lathe is not an antique. All it needed was some cleaning up, maybe some new wiring and a little new paint. He said was working on the stand, not so much the lathe. There was no need to take it all the way down and get extensive with it for what he was intending to do with it. So, lighten up. It's a working machine. It didn't have to be fully restored to 'like new' condition.

Agree with you. He doesn't restore an old rare car. It's a tool. Just a tool.

A fantastic restoration and the casting of the handle with epoxy was sheer genius. I cannot wait to see what you produce on your new lathe. The work was done to your usual very high standards. A HUGE thumbs up.

Handle repair was essentially jerry rigged mold casting setup, though using pen ink as color was pretty clever idea, same as adding storage space under the lathe, that in this case can create tripping hazard. How ever what hell are you talking about high standards? I know these things depend on perspective, but camoon?! He didnt even replace slide cleaner pads, check slider for straightness and who know what he over looked. Also this not a restoration, more like "amateur fix it in working condition and paint it". But at least he did try to make it better, rather than fucking it up by lack of maintenance. I suggest you pool over how to maintain your lathe and do bit more thorough job next time.

WTF is with all these DB's who come on RU-vid and belittle people's work? This clown has 41 videos showing him running around playing combat games with pretend guns. Make something or fix something before you trash somebody who does.

Although you say you are "developing" your skills they are far in advance of mine, I want to go out and break something so I can fix it using your method. An absolutely brilliant find and a great size for a home workshop, I’m totally envious as I only have a small wood lathe.

I suspect that the gearbox and apron gears need liquid oil rather than grease. Nice work.
@rolandcraggs348
@rolandcraggs348 5 лет назад
Nah. He did right in both cases. The gearbox (clue in the name) needs gearbox oil, any automotive grade will do in a hobby lathe, I'd go for something more specific in an industrial environment. The oil is thrown around inside by the high speed shaft and gears, lubricating the whole assembly. The apron is low speed, oil wouldn't get thrown around so grease is the word there. The bigger the glob the better the job.

Looks like normal human restoration that you and I can do. Within budget and time frame. Fixing worn parts, fixing broken parts. Not the crazy down to the last screw restoration one apparently nowadays needs to do to not attract butthurt perfectionists. That said, I cannot agree on your pick of the color scheme, gray is just.. too gray, you know. Some nice colorful hammer paint finish would have been just perfect. Your skill with the roller is second to none, though, I can never get this to work, brush for me all the way :) Also would have probably replaced the slotted screws with nice socket screws, but that's just me kinda like that hexagon look. Aside from that, the handle fix. Very very well done, who needs 2k mold silicone when you can use regular caulking one ;) And where that pens which paint you blew into the epoxy? Genius! Gonna remember that for whenever I need to do something similar.

I would be concerned about out of tolerance gears,bearings,sliding surfaces and of course the electric motor. Having said that I can't wait to run across one of these and get knee deep in gears and grease and nuts and bolts. I'll overcome my concerns about wear and tear as I work through the project. I would have used a paint brush instead of roller. Nice move on the wheel repair. Got some pointers. Thanks and nice job.

Good job fixing up the late. Ignore negative comments :) My only thought seeing this is about the bottom stand, while a great idea to have a drawer to stor stuff, is that stand not too deep? I would imagine you having to stand just a tad too far away from the lathe for comfortable use, especially if you stand for more than say 20 minutes working manually.
