Gday, Im waiting on parts to arrive for a cylinder repair im doing, My lathe is 3 years old now and it's due for it 12 month oil change so I get this done, I hope you enjoy the video and really appreciate your support, Cheers...
Hafco It’s great to see someone do maintenance on their machine. So many lathe owners don’t,and it shows. Take care of your equipment and it will take care of you. Good luck with your treatments. I’ve been dealing with cancer for about five years now. After several surgeries (my treatment didn’t work) and just having checkup ,everything is fine. Thanks for your devotion to this trade and sharing.
Gday James, Im a believer that if you look after your machine the machine will look after you, Preventive maintenance is the key, Im really hoping the chemo works and its all trail and error with the cancer I have, Time will tell, I wish you all the best mate, Good luck in the draw, Cheers
Preventive maintenance is by far the best insurance policy one can have. Your attention to detail, and knowing that machine like the back if your hand is essential. I was actually a bit surprised just how clean the oil coming out looked... it was beautiful and almost as clean as the day it went in I would imagine. I am very grateful to see you keeping busy and working as hard as ever. I am very much looking forward to the upcoming series of the rod build and re-sealing. You and your family are continually in my prayers daily. I pray that all are well, and you keep up the amazing work. Much live n prayers.🙏💜
Gday, Im believe if you look after a machine it will look after you, the oil was almost as good as the day it went in but its cheap insurance, Appreciate you watching and commenting, Cheers
Matty! that's a nice Hafco lathe and as the saying goes "You take care of your tools, They take care of you!" Wishing you the best in the coming months.
Gday, Im working on a good yarn now😂, I couldn't think of a good word and I was looking at the lathe and thought that'll do, Thanks for watching and good luck, Cheers
Hay Matty if you put a vacuum cleaner on fill hole on top you can remove the pug with no oil running out and you can make a spout to screw in. best wishes Robert
Several years ago I installed a dro on my 1944 Logan lathe worth every penny. It makes I so much easier no more constant measuring and checking. I´ll be waiting to see your cylinder rebuild video. Kurtis better watch out you might be the new youtube heavy equipment rebuilding expert.
Gfay, Im about to order the DRO, The cylinder repair is hopefully next weeks video, I dont think Kurtis has anything to worry about mate, I dont think id fit some of them big cylinders in my workshop, Cheers
Matty… DRO ? Abso-bloody-lately mate. I fitted one to my old 1997 960B, and I’m over the moon. My eyes ain’t what they used to be, and the DRO is giving back what advancing years have … ‘reduced’. I was so impressed that I ordered my new mill/drill fitted with one. They are so-o-o-o convenient… and speed up the work IMHO. Do it mate… you won’t regret it 👍 Regards Robert
Gday Robert, it’s going to be a game changer I think but going to take some getting used to not looking at the dial alm the time, one day when I get another mill it will be fitted with a dro, appreciate your support mate, cheers
Hafco Howdy sir! If I could afford a lathe like yours, I wouldn’t hesitate. That machine puts out some awesome finishes with you at the wheel. I got a decent deal on my old atlas/craftsman lathe and that’ll probably be my last lathe. At least according to my financial coordinator 😉 I appreciate how you’re still carrying on. Way to be a better role model than most of the overpaid athletes in this world. I wish they had even a fraction of the grit you’ve got. Keep up the great videos sir.
It's definitely a go with the DRO, it would be a spend well worth the upgrade to the Hafco lathe, maybe your wife and mine could get together over a cuppa and discuss ways to manage husbands who are inflicted with tools and machining. You keep well Matty. 😄
Hafco ;keep the faith on your cancer I was diagnosed with plasmastic lymphoma in 2016 they give me 4 months to live without treatment 5 months with treatment. I'm still kickin.
G'day Matty. That Hafco Lathe has certainly performed over the years. By the way, you're looking great and I wish you all the very best with the rust issues and a speedy recovery. Yes for the DRO, doesn't have to be an expensive one, but you will certainly appreciate it once installed. Cheers.
Gday, The lathe has been a great machine and its done everything ive thrown at it, I have to go for chemo next week so ill be crook again for a week or so but thats life mate, Good luck🤞🏼
I live in the USA and have an old south Ben lathe. Ive never seen one of the Hafco lathes in person but from the use that you get out of yours they certainly look like a real good lathe. Its good to see that your doing well. Beat the hell out of that cancer and keep putting one foot in front of the other Matty.
Gday, The brand is very common here in Australia, Im really happy with the lathe and it last me for years, I'll put up the best fight I can to beat it mate, Cheers
Hi Matty, You are coorect Hafco lathes are great. We have had 2 of them and they have done an enormous amount of work. All the best for your treatments.
Gday, my first Hare and Forbes lathe was Chinese made and wasn't a good machine at all, The AL960B is Taiwanese and the difference in quality is amazing, I really can't fault mine, Its been a great lathe, Good luck mate. Cheers
I think one of the very good signs of this illness is, you do not look ill, in fact you look very healthy. And that's great! DRO, absolutely yes, should have done it last year. You'll never go back without one. 20K sub congrats
Hafco - but I'd be happy with just the hat, as I collect hats. Thanks again, you still showed something educational and I enjoyed. Much appreciate you and your videos.
Hi Matty. You are looking great!! Has your HAFCO lathe got a 900mm bed? Metric or imperial lead screw? Definetely fit a DRO to the lathe. You will wonder what you did without it. Also I would not worry about extending the oil change period to 2 to 3 years as long as you have plenty of magnets to catch floating metal particles. A trick I did when fitting magnetic drain plugs to connect the vacuum cleaner to the breather hole. When you do this the drain plug can be removed without loosing any oil. I bought spare drain plugs and epoxied cylinder magnets to them so I could do a quick swap. Cheers
Gday John, Hope you and your wife are going well, Im feeling ok atm but another round of chemo next week will knock me around for a week or so, My lathe (AL960b) has 900 between centres and has an imperial lead screw, Ive got magnets in the headstock but I might do what you did and put one in the drain plug, Really appreciate you watching and commenting and good luck in the giveaway, Cheers
I have the same system oiling the main bearings of my lathe. I believe the oil splashes up to the concave cover plate then runs down into the gallery just under the cover plate, finally making its way to the oiler holes over the bearings. If the lathe is not used for a few weeks, I suspect the bearings start dry and then run for some time before they are properly lubricated. A cheap aquarium pump was installed with some clear hose to the mid point of the oil channel, it is held in place by neodymium magnets. I ran 2X 0.8mm phone cable to a small transformer for power through a 2mm hole into the gearbox. Scotch locks, (phone crimps) are used to join the wires, (they don't mind being submerged). ATF is used to lubricate that gearbox but I will try the Penrite on my next change. The pump goes on before I start and while working. The lathe runs quieter. A DRO is a great mod, especially on the cross slide. Saw a motorbike disc brake rotor and caliper mounted behind the chuck on a lathe on youtube recently. P.S. Hey Hafco, send Matty a DRO kit !
Gday, The pump is a good idea, My lathe normally gets used everyday hence why I do a service every 12 months, Appreciate you watching and commenting and good luck mate, Cheers
Your a good husband, father and mate... if you want a DRO go for it... with all the crap that life has thrown your way you truly deserve it.. and yes Hafco i would love to have something you built it would be well used.... Thank you Matty....
G'day Matty. Good idea keeping the lathe serviced 👍Definite yes on the DRO (I'm about to install one on mine too). And yes - my allen keys get hung up on the floor sometimes too. PS: Hafco !
I’ll start by saying I’m sad for your health condition and pray for a speedy recovery. Another great video with excellent explanations as to why maintenance in our machine tools is important, thanks. HEFCO.
Gday, Ive always believed that if you look after you machines they will look after you for many years, appreciate you watching and good luck, P.S. please edit the E far an A, the random comment generator will pick up your comment then mate, Cheers
Hi Matt. Well I brought a Hafco in Feb this year from a 85 year old engineer who used it to restore a 250 BMW motor bike. I need to service the machine with new oil but it came without a manual. Your video has given me the process to complete this service. Many Thanks. All the best for up coming treatment.
Matty, good to see you looking a bit better mate. Anything that keeps you looking forward is a plus, so get the DRO and stick it on your fantastic lathe. Regards to you and family 👍
Gday, Im feeling really good this week, I have another round of chemo in a few day so ill be crook for a week or so, Thanks for watching and good luck, Cheers
Watch your videos all the way from the isle of tiree on the west coast of Scotland. Good to sevice your hafco lathe regularly. Hope you're keeping well.
Gday, Appreciate you watching, Bec my wife and I really enjoy looking at the analytics seeing which countries the viewers are from, It really interesting, cheers mate
Gday, I always have a cuppa going in the workshop, As soon as it empty I make another one and just sip away at it over an hour or so, Appreciate you watching and commenting mate, Cheers
Hafco Definitely get the DRO. I've been watching and enjoying your videos for a long time and praying for your full recovery. Thank you for the great videos.
Gday Steve, There has been a lot of viewers saying this has reminded them to do a service on there lathe, Appreciate you watching and commenting, Cheers
A DRO is incredibly useful on any machine. I highly recommend TouchDRO. It's an adapter board that interfaces with the scales on the machine, and connects to an app on a tablet via bluetooth. The UI is leaps and bounds better than the import DRO displays. I've found that the import glass scales are very accurate and repeatable. They're cheap, too... A TouchDRO board, a cheap tablet (and something to hold it), and the import scales, will get you a powerful setup for not a lot of coin. I'd also recommend putting a scale on the tailstock quill. Makes drilling to an accurate depth super easy. The TouchDRO board has 4 inputs, and they can be summed, so I've also added an additional read head to the Z-axis scale, and attached it to the tailstock body. This allows me to pull the whole tailstock back to clear chips, without losing my measurement.
Gday, I have a TouchDRO on the Cincinnati mill, It a great unit and never had any trouble with it, Ive decided to go with the conventional type DRO for the lathe for something different, I dont need all the function the TouchDRO offers on the lathe, Appreciate you watching and commenting, Cheers
Matty you can get to 1.75 with a 28 top and 32 bottom change gear if needed. The Norton gearbox on your lathe can reach almost any metric thread pitch but you may need to source a couple of change gears. Hope you are doing better
Yep, for 1.75 you just need to get a 28T gear then run 28-127/120-32 with the gearbox in the B6 position. The A6 position will allow you to cut 3.50 pitch as well. There was a run of these gears organised through the Australian metalworking forum back in 2010 for a group of us 960 owners.
Thanks for that info. Have a '70's Taiwanese lathe with the same limitation. I'l get one of the kids to 3D print me a 28 T gear and we can give it a shot. M12x1.75 is pretty common in my world .
G'day Matty, glad you're keeping on the up, my friend Get the bloody dro you're worth it 😂 Keep on keeping you beauty, have a great one 👍 big love to you and yours Hafco 👍
Gday Ralfy, I'm about to place the order for the DRO and I didn't get a black eye or a divorce😂, Im going in for chemo this week so ill be up the shit for a week id say, Big love to you to mate and good luck in the draw, Cheers
It does look like a well made lathe you have. I have pondered over fitting a dro to my lathe many times. It would be a great addition. Creeping up on a certain size always takes me a while to do. With a dro it would be a breeze. Take care Sir & see you on the next video. Steve.
hafco Your vid reminds me that it's been a few years since I changed oil in my headstock and gave it an inspection. Doesn't get near the use yours does, but still should be done. Thanks for the reminder! Andrew
Those HAFCO machines are nice. I have a freind who has a different model but loves it. Cheers and keep the content coming. Wish I had a larger lathe. Maybe someday.
Hi Matty, I brought a Hafco lathe based on your feedback, and I too have had no issues, and it has performed well. This is not a lame video mate. It has reminded me that I need to change the oil in my lath at some point soon as well. I do have a foot brake so just let me know if you need any photos or video of it. My new Hafco did come with a DRO, but my smaller lath did not come with one. The best thing I did to the smaller lathe was to install a DRO, so I recommend that you go ahead and add one.
Gday John, I can't fault the lathe I have now, Its done everything ive asked it to with zero issues, Preventative maintenance is the key to a long lasting machine in my opinion, Im about to order the DRO and with no divorce thankfully😂, I'll let you know if I needs some photos and thanks for offering, Cheers mate
