Dr. Rizal wrote this poem in prison located in a Spanish Fort called Intramuros. The night before his execution, his family was allowed to visit him. He wrote this poem in a small paper and inserted it inside a lamp. He whispered to his sister in english as he handed the lamp saying "There is something inside." He made sure the Spanish guards did not understand. His sister then went home and found the poem inside the lamp. It is currently displayed in Intramuros which is now a museum.

I’ve heard many people say that Dr. José Rizal is overrated as a hero. I don’t think that’s true at all. I think he’s a total badass! He wrote two novels that woke the Philippines up, and sparked the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonialism. He fully knew that his novels, his other writings, and strong beliefs would get him into deep trouble, and he was willing to suffer the consequences. When he was in prison and sentenced to death, apparently he was very calm, almost as if he accepted his fate. He wrote “Mi Ultimo Adios” the night before he execution, and hid the poem inside an oil lamp which was then given to his grieving sister. She found and read the poem after he died. He calmly walked to his execution site with a smile on his face. Jose requested that he face his executioners as they shoot him, but that was denied as those who are seen as “traitors” to Spain must be shot in the back. When he heard the guns firing in his direction, he made a quick effort to turn his body and face the sun to prevent from being shot in the back because he knew he was not a traitor. Years prior, he wrote in a letter to his friend that he wanted to die bravely and prove to the Spaniards that Filipinos aren’t “cowards” and are willing to die for their country. That’s what he did! His death only angered Filipino Revolutionaries who looked up to him, and fueled the fire even more to fight for freedom. He was truly a brave hero who only fought the Spaniards with his pen and paper, and the title “National Hero” is well deserved.

well the main reason that he was treated as an overrated hero is that The Philippines did not declare him as the hero, it was the Americans during the American occupation. And it was said that the Americans chose him because they want the Philippines only to be strong in mind but still be a pushover so they would not rebel against US like what they did with Spain. That is how I was told during my grade school days

He was declared Pride of the Malay Race. Not just Filipinos, the whole Malay race including Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. He was the one who said "The pen is mightier than the sword. When you said the poem in Spanish and proceeded to explain it in English, I felt the pain. This is why Filipinos like me must relearn the language because a lot of good Spanish Literary pieces was penned in the Philippines during the Colonization era. And I do believe that translations does not usually give justice to the true sense of the piece. I saw that in Filipino to English translation. Somehow you will get the meaning but it has no soul... not the truest sense of the words.

@@TheALWAHAT you must be a fan of ghandi well he was killed by his own people a Hindu nationalist , I admire rizal not as revolutionary but sea visionary since you asked me to revisit history may I suggest that you read Jose rizal by zaide this book is a good account of who rizal as a person the touch me not and the filibuster were books not to inspire a revolution but to serve as eye opener to the Spaniards. Those books were dedicated not for the natives but for the Spaniards the harsh mother . In my school it’s to memorized “ultimo adios” for random recitation to passed the required units to graduate four years course “Bachelor of Science in Education, Arts, Commerce, Nursing” even the vocational course Spanish subject was required that year 1978! Pity now they stick in English.

I remember when I had my nivel 3 Spanish studies at Instituto Cervantes de Manila, we celebrated the "Dia del E", a celebration of the role of the Espanol language in the Filpino culture and how the two countries, Spain and Philippines, are forever tied by our history. We recited this poem as part of the program entitled "Homenaje a Rizal". It was very touching and emotional. I may not be able to grasp the full intensity of this beautiful poem but, as a Filipino who loves my country dearly, I was deeply moved and rendered teary-eyed halfway through the poem. I had to stay quiet for a little while after we are done with the reading to ponder and pay my respect.

It's required during my high school, we either recite it in front of the class complete with passinate convictions or take the final exam (I forgot the content of the exam). And so I did, I went in front and delivered the best speech in my entire human existence. My classmates were clapping on my performance. I cannot figure out until now why I still end up taking the final exam.

He translated a spanish book to Tagalog so that the Filipinos will understand that when spain coloniaed us, we were already civilised and has our own government. He found the book ina library in England that’s why he stayed there to translate the book.

Dr. Jose Rizal, Blumentritt, Robertson, and Stangl said that Ophir was Luzon in part or in whole. Rizal identified "Pulilu" as Bo-ol or Bohol. Nobody disputed Dr. Jose Rizal. So there are only three possible places in the Philippines that could be identified as Ophir, they are Luzon, Mindoro, and Bohol. I don't have much details yet on how deep Rizal knew about the land of Ophir. But interestingly the first part of his last poem he wrote before his execution tickles one's curiosity of how much Rizal know about our ancient identity. Spanish Version (original language used by Rizal for this poem): Adiós, Patria adorada, región del sol querida, Perla del mar de oriente, nuestro perdido Edén! A darte voy alegre la triste mustia vida, Y fuera más brillante, más fresca, más florida, También por ti la diera, la diera por tu bien. English Version: Farewell, my adored Land, region of the sun caressed, Pearl of the Orient Sea, our Eden lost, With gladness I give you my life, sad and repressed; And were it more brilliant, more fresh and at its best, I would still give it to you for your welfare at most. Tagalog Version: Paalam, sinta kong Lupang Tinubuan Bayang sinagana ng sikat ng araw Marikit na mutya ng dagat silangan Edeng maligayang sa ami’y pumanaw. He wrote it in prison before he was executed. According to history books, On the day of his execution, he was made to turn his back towards the sun to signify his being a traitor to the spanish crown. But upon hearing "fuego", he turned to ensure that he died facing the sun.

Perla del Mar de Orient….Pearl of the Orient Seas. I love how Dr Jose P. Rizal describes our country the Philippines. We were made to memorise “Mi Ultimo Adios” in my College Days and in order to pass you have to have the right Castilian pronunciation, where the letter z is pronounced as th etcetera, and of course should be packed with emotions per stanza.

That's the sad realities of some of our history classes. Teachers and professors tend to focus on memorizing the dates, names, places and texts. Instead of focusing on the "whys" of our history. That's why others found it too boring. But the truth is, history is the most interesting and profound study of our origin, our culture, our rise and fall. I think (i did not remember my history lessons well) he wrote this when he was imprisoned in the dungeons of Fort Santiago in the Intramuros (the walled city which is a famous tourist destination nowadays) in Manila while awaiting for his execution. He was first exiled to Dapitan (which is near Zamboanga in Mindanao) where he had a chance to escape (by the Philippine revolutionaries who tried to contact him in Dapitan) but he refused the offer because of "integrity" (like he would rather die with grace than run away from his execution with shame because he knows that he is fighting for the right reasons) then was sent back to Manila for his execution. I might be wrong so anyone can correct me on this statement.

@@eelchiong6709 ah yes i am aware regarding the location (including the part where the Dapitan polity was supposed to be in Bohol island first then they transferred to northern Zamboanga peninsula) . Im just generalizing that it is near the Zamboanga area since Sol and Luna are not that very familiarized with the geography and Zamboanga city is kinda significant for them.

My spanish teacher in high school asked us to memorize all 14 stanzas. Those who can successfully recite from memory will be exempted from taking the final exam. I memorized 10 stanzas and I know I wont be able to memorize the last four in time for the recitation. I got exempted from taking the finals. How I did it? I memorized the last two stanzas. Stanza 11 and 12 was dictated by my classmate.

The final overseas trip for Jose Rival was in The USA. He spoke in English at The Palace Hotel on New Montgomery Street, San Francisco, my hometown. 🌁 outside of the hotel is a plaque commemorating the event. After this trip, Rizal returned to The Philippines 🇵🇭. He was martyred by the Spanish in Manila. Luneta Park has a monument over the site of his execution. I pass by The Palace Hotel many times. I have seen the monument in Luneta Park. The McKinley administration would not bring The USA into the Philippines until the USS Maine exploded near Cuba. RIP. Jose Rizal. 🇵🇭

Seeing my beloved country as it is right now, bereft with corruption, poverty, hopelessness and indifference. Of gullible people who dont know their true identity. My tears flowed uncontrollably when i listened to the poem that our national hero wrote the day before he gave his life for our freedom. I've lived in California for 25 years now. Driven here by need than by choice because of the very little opportunity there is to be found in my beloved country. But my heart has and will always belong to my motherland. My home, my love. I hope things will change for the better soon. Thank you for featuring our national hero. while Dr. Jose Rizal firmly stands to his belief that pen is mightier than sword, there is also Andress Bonifacio, who is also a Philippine patriot debated to be the country's "National Hero". He instigated the revolt of August 1896 against the Spaniards. he was inspired and awakened by the novels written by Dr. Jose Rizal. He is known to be "The Father of the Philippine Revolution"

Rizal was a Pascifist, he believed that reina España would leave us and give our people their independence naturally but Andres Bonifacio was tired of the abuses they are causing for how many decades, Bonifacio was a true warrior he organized a revolutionary group which is the KKK that fought the spanish left here in PH not to mention spanish empire was declining when our people decided to revolt against them, it was the same time when Cuba was also fighting for their own independence but the Americans came acting all friendly and shit trying to "help" our people against spain truly a wolf in a sheep’s clothing but our people weren’t aware that spain already sold us to the USA for 20 million dollars in the treaty of paris so the Americans and the Spanish left in the PH faked a battle in Manila to declare that the Americans defeated the Spanish when in fact it was our people who did all the fighting then the Americans took over the whole Intramuros and the rest is history

@@SolLunaTV Rizal and Bonifacio met in 1892, and it seemed like Rizal , though a pacifist, gave his blessing to Bonifacio’s revolutionary plans. In Rizal’s novels, there is also a revolutionary character, I think, which means that Rizal knew the limits of being pacifist.

@@askyoauntie he's a diplomat, a civic man. In his diary, he did think that negotiating with Spain would work. It did though, it reached them, although they didn't really act on the corruption of their representatives in the Philippines. Cause during that time, Spain was also losing wars left and right and losing power, and Philippines is one of their lesser territories. So they failed to act on the corruption of the gov. that handled the Philippines. However, he also realized in the end that it would never work, so he wrote his poem hoping to awaken Filipinos. He did eventually give in to Bonifacio's way of independence.

You know, you might not know this but with both you reacting to this makes it a new experience even though we have learned this at school. Maybe because can understand it firsthand with spanish not a translated one. I think that the teachers teaching this to us in english lessens it's impact. We don't understand spanish so thank you for reacting on this. It's beautiful.

Spanish (grammar and literature) must be taught again in the Philippine education system from preschool until college, in order for future Filipinos understand the gist of Mi Último Adiós written by José Rizal before he was executed on 30 December 1896.

I have never understood the poem till u explained it. When i went to college i took this subject as a pre requisite to graduate. Ive watched the movie JoséRizal because i needed to pass but nvr have i watched a movie and not a play where people stood up at the beginning for natl anthem and applauded at the end. Some where even crying. The way u expalained the poem gave it a diff feeling for me

We need to memorized and understand this 23 stanza "Mi Ultimo Adios" (My Last Farewell or Goodbye) in order to pass this Rizal subject in college the poem he wrote the night before he was executed by Spanish colonizer. Although we speak Spanish in our home before, it is really hard to speak Spanish in front of non-Spanish speakers like my classmates. Spanish subject is easier, we study mostly conjugation not reading and memorizing lyric poem like Mi Ultimo Adios. We also had to memorize his other poems like Ala Juventud Filipino (To the Filipino Youth). He is our national hero Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado Y Realondo. We commemorate his Rizal Day every December 30 every year. Thank you for your reactions. Muchas Gracias Sol Y Luna.

I remember during high school when we were having a lesson on El Filibusterismo which is one of the two novels to which Jose Rizal is best remembered for getting shot, our teacher read this poem to us with full of emotion that made a few of us cried including myself.(Though my teacher still prefers Andres Bonifacio to be the National Hero than Jose Rizal).

Rizal was killed by the Spaniards, Bonifacio was killed by Aguinaldo. I would rather have Rizal because he had a bigger impact to our path to independence and national identity.

Sadly, almost all Filipinos now doesn’t speak and write Spanish anymore. Americans made sure of that when they took the country over from the Spaniards. But the present Philippine government gave the Spanish language the “optional language” status along with Arabic when something happens to all Philippine regional languages.

No, you should be proud!! We redeemed what belongs to us.. Not only that, we can also speak better English than other nations, and even though we don't speak Spanish fluently we use a alot of Spanish words, many of them have replaced the Tagalog equivalent, and instead we just use the Spanish terms.
