Just clarifying if you have any confusion. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan Sir is a Pakistani who has sung numerous songs for Bollywood movies and is very popular in India. So, the music of Pakistan and the North Indian Music(Hindustani Sangeet) are essentially one and the same. Needless to mention Pak and Ind were a single nation 70 years ago. Therefore, everything associated with music, the way it is sung, the Raga system etc. is the same in both. Of course due to political divisions and to maintain a national identity, people of either country would like to call it by their own names.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is a modern Pakistani legend. He is singing Dillagi and then Mast Qalander which are his uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's songs!

Harmonium help us to memorize notes in early stages.... Then it helped us to not to miss any note while singing raga, tan etc, playing codes .... Then it becomes a great companion ☺️♥️

They got him because the Noble Peace Prize was given to a Pakistani and so they invited a Pakistani artist at the request of the Pakistani Noble Peace Prize winner.

This Raag concert is sung in a Qawwali (Sufi Islamic devotional style of singing by Sufi poets) with the artists and musicians. Sufi love songs by Sufi poets are often performed called ghazals, and Kafi, an individual genre played with percussion & harmonium. Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is the nephew who was trained by his uncle, the late Pakistan singing legend Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, one of a kind singer. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan performed Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's famous Qawwalis Tumhe Dillagi, Mast Qalandar and sang Aao Parhao here as well.

Fun fact: when he sings he’s in his own zone and doesn’t see or notice the audience… he sings purely for his joy…! He told this many times in different interviews that he and his team of his live musicians solely sing and play for themselves and to have fun….

Majority of singer's can either sing or do those 7 raags altogether or touch those high notes, it's nearly impossible to combine them both and sing them together, master Rahat is one of the singers who can touch the high notes while he's singing the 7 raags. No wonder why he's a great singer, it's not because it's God gifted, it's because he's been practicing and training since he was 6 years old and his period of training is much more older then our ages. He has been trained under the influence of his uncle the great lyricist, composer and master of music, master Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. This legend teached everything he knew to his nephew so he could continue the legacy of his ancestors. Who were all obsessed with musical ecstasy. Rahat is the shadow of his great uncle and if he was alive he would've been so proud of what his nephew has become❤️

Tumhain dillagi, the song he performed is also Nusrat's composition. React to the original where Rahat is also featured. Its even better. That 15:30 moment was also Nusrat's signature. Nusrat and his group including Rahat used to make international audience go wild on "Dam Mast Qalandar"

On the harmonium and classical singing connection: Classical singers do and have been training themselves on harmonium because u will notice the harmonium follows the exact same notes when singing any 'raag' in classical practice. It is played in a way that the fingers attempt to mimic all the notes and semi notes with detail. The sound of harmonium is closer to the human sound as compared to other instruments so thats another reason.

I love how ustadji havent used literal words because of english audience, he had to manage all that with just vocal sounds. No matter what the consequences would be.

Everyone is listening to Nusrat Sahab in one way or the other. Imagine if he would have lived more. Such great compositions, impeccable voice and bravest singer. Ustad Rashid khan is best Hindustani modern day singer.

Anybody who sings at this level can, at the bare minimum, play harmonium, tabla, sitar, and/or violin. Harmonium is most popular because it give your fingers muscle memory to play the notes within the raag. I'm a little trained, but it was only for a few years. I've sung while playing the tabla before. And yes, it's just about as difficult as you'd imagine.

Fusion of classical and western music was first started by Rahat's uncle, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Pakistan is the pioneer of this tyoe of fusion and continues to produce incredible fusion pieces.

I so admire and respect your quest and desire to explore all forms of Music. When you talk of fusion this process first started with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rahat's uncle and mentor. Qawwali was becoming a dying art with rock and roll and pop dominating the world scene. He was the visionary who started adding new elements to qawwali, yet keeping the traditional form in contact to bring the young generations back to qawwali. Late 80s and early 90s saw some great fusions coming out with him. He collaborated with Peter Gabriel in producing some international level work which Rahat carried on. There are videos on you tube of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan performing on stage with Rahat a barely 8 to 10 years old sitting on stage with him. In between he would give him a cue to say the alaap, but mostly repeating the antra, and rhythm clapping. That is so insightful in learning how they train from a young age. I hope you will watch one of those. Blessings.

Never heard a in debt review like this. You two must be well established in musical fields. I really liked how you pointed out that the mix of "alternate rock" kind of music and "classical" in a performance like this is why it is more appealing to a wider audience. So hats off to this singer. Anyone who is much more better than him in classical might not have contributed enough to "project" or "introduce" this type of classical song to a wider audience. Your question about relation of Harmonium and classical singing, in India many things run by the principles of "...you need to do X" and Harmonium is that instrument which "...you need to learn" to even consider yourself a singer, and specially a classical singer. Well, reasoning and history someone else might give a better perspective. But "you need to" is a big implication in the Indian culture for anything.

I love your reactions so very much, but........ please do differentiate between Pakistan music and Indian music. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is Pakistani, yes many of his song are in bollywood, but his from Pakistan. He is the nephew of the legend Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and learned from him. Pakistan and India used to be one country so much of our history, language and culture is very similar. And basically the same. Guess who splitt us up =D

Hola people, Como estas and that's pretty much the extent of my Spanish 😀... great reaction, I appreciate you to sharing your views and insight from a musical perspective.... few things I would like to point out, the changes in rhythms you noticed was because this was a compilation of snippets of a few different songs, and the idea of blending classical singing with Western and other instruments actually come from Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, in fact the songs featured in this performance were originally sang by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, he was big on taking the classical and bringing it to the world and using more familiar instrument was one of the ways to make that happen, also he's from Pakistan not India (no hate, just clarifying) ... now this classical music and Indian Classical music have same roots but this specifically form of music is Qawalli, which is different from popular classical singers from India. For example, Sonu Nigam or the musician you mentioned A R Rahman... they all may use the same raags, but the arrangement of raags and switches and singing the actual raags themselves in the song is specific to Qawalli music.... so while Sonu and Rahat may have similarities but very distinct differences as well .... and Qawalli is far more popular and more of a Pakistani culture than Indian ... and yes you are right this guy is a master, getting to his level is rare, but then again he did learn from the best Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan ... please check out Rang by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Amjad Sabri, it's a coke studio production, and lastly this is Coke studio Pakistan, not India, same thing with Tu Jhoom, Afreen Afreen, Chap Tilak, Allah Hu Akbar, these are all Coke Studio Pakistan. These two boynd legendary men produced music for next 100 years..
