You'd be surprised .A lot of my classmates got jobs right after school that fall class. That's me with Freddy hehe . Basically you got to get out there and find the work, signing local 47 and 1245 I heard will yield the best results as they are hiring almost asap.

@@pg1993 the first couple weeks is climbing and getting used to it. Then you do single arms then doubles. Once you got that all down you start doing spans and learning little things here and there. Every professor does it differently

These guys don't know what it's like to climb without fall arrest, without that bucksqueeze. I climbed 95 feet up an interstate crossing with the old style belt. I put a bolt thru the pole, and put my safety over the bolt in case I fell. It made the work too uncomfortable. I switched the safety under the bolt, which meant if I cut out I'd fall to the bottom. Yes, I am that confident in myself. It's better to do it like you always do it instead of changing it up for one pole because it's tall. I made slow movements, took my time, and everything went fine. I slipped coming down, my gaff didn't catch on a step down. My other knee got buried in my chest. Scared the fucking shit out of me. Everything was ok though. The fucking owner could have been cool and rented a high ranger. He snorted too much cocke and didn't wanna pay. I NEVER would safety on overtop of the line, always underneath, because chest level is where you want the work. (I did communication linework).

Only ignorant, stupid people would climb without the latest in safety equipment. Big deal that you like to climb stupid and you might like the risk of killing yourself in a split second. Don't belittle those that are smart enough to work safely.

These schools let the guys who can afford 15 grand and tuitions become linemen. Linemen USED to be found the old school way. You get a guy, let him play on some gaffs and learn to climb, and the guy MUST be somewhat mechanical and intelligent to learn as he goes. The old school method of making linemen FOUND the real lineman. If the man wasn't intelligent enough to learn as he went along, he either stayed a groundhand or found another job. For the power monopolies, they hire the guy who's perfect. They hire the guy with no tickets on his DMV record, and they hire the churchboy who's never had ANYTHING on hiscriminal record, not even a drunk in public. A contractor would laugh if a guy told them the story of himself getting drunk and doing something stupid. Dominion Power would frown and tell the guy they cannot hire him (they'll tell him in a way in which it will protect them from a discrimination suit. Contractors have the REAL Linemen. Dominion Power type companies have the babies who get to work every job in the bucket. Of course they do the main junction poles and roadside work. They give the shit work to contractors, because REAL Linemen are needed to get the shitwork done. Dominion Power gives the work to contractors because they know the work is going to be extremely dangerous and you're not going to be able to cover everything with blankets and get the job done. Dominion KNOWS top safety will have to be ignored and risk of death is there, so they give the jobs to contractors. Dominion KNOWS it would take their guys all day to changeout the crossarms on ONE pole, because their guys would have to figure out how to move the wires with 20 blankets on one wire and blankets halfway down the span. Dominion knows it's going to take guys with balls of steel to dangerously changeout the crossarms in a timely manner, so who do they call? Batman!!! Kidding, they call the real Linemen. Contractors. Contractors are your real Linemen. Real Linemen are the old school guys who learned on the job. Communications linework isn't anything special and you CAN lose your life on the job (again, a co worker of mine was killed by 19,900 volts), though I'm proud to have learned on the job by a top notch foreman. Taking a guy and teaching him on the job finds the guys who can think and are mechanical. These schools allow guys who aren't mechanically inclined to become linemen. These schools also turn guys into thinking they're hot shots. I'll tell you now, DON'T try to be a hot shot and show off or you'll fall. Be the guy who gets shit talked about him because he's slow and careful while climbing. Don't be the show boat climber.

My local power company hires people with no experience and puts them through a 4 year apprenticeship program at the expense of the utility. Most power companies in my region do this as well. Get your facts straight before you post something so stupid and ignorant.

jay willow you know I did a lineman school because just going to your local and not having school and the other apps do makes you the last to be picked. I went to school so I could get a job fast. I didn’t have the rich upbringing to pay for it I had to take out loans, but hey when this line of work pays you this fucking much you get out of debt quick. Schooling doesn’t just shoot out a bunch of pussies they weed them out you idiot. I graduated with 50 other top notch apprentices. Most of us got jobs and are killing it here in Cali. You can get off your damn high horse and sit at the bottom of the pole with the ground crew.

Edgar NLC man. In my opinion it’s the best school to learn and be prepared for the real world of lineman. They have campuses in Idaho Texas and Florida that’s all I know but there are some other good ones down in the south too. Anymore questions don’t be afraid to ask

@@Recruits.Colorado contact the local union hall closest to you. Apply to the njatc apprenticeship program. That depends on what region of the country you live in. Get a minimum class b cdl license or permit again all depends on the requirements for the njatc in your region. Once you apply they will schedule you for an aptitude test which is basic algebra and reading comprehension. Once you pass that they’ll set up an interview. If you do well on the interview they’ll put you in a training boot camp. Once you pass you climbing test you will be put to work as a first step apprentice and be paid to train. I’m in the north east in new york. Our first step apprentices start out at 37$ an hour. Good luck
