The girls are going to do whatever with their hair. I know women who grew their hair out naturally then relaxed at a length they like because they feel it's low maintenance. I will continue being natural cause I understand the chemicals in all the forms of relaxers and I won't be adding anything more to the degradation of my health.

When you reach my age 50+ all the bad choices show up. When you’re young not so much. I tell you what I wish all the information that is easily available now was available 30+ years ago. We need to talk about texturism more. Until I stop seeing Black women bullied for wearing their 4c hair in wash n go's, afros, & free form locs by other Black people, I don't believe people when they say texturism & hair discrimination hasn't affected how they view & treat tightly coiled coarse kinky hair. My family use to tell me I looked like a boy (and we all have 4c hair🙄). So let's not deny that we're also taught that certain features (4c hair, dark skin(colorism), etc) are masculine. I was feeling insecure one day, but I remember wearing my shrunken 4c hair with hoops and a little girl told me she liked my hair, it made my day!😭

I remember natural hair youtube around 2013. There were so many comments on loose texture hair tutorials from women saying they wish they had hair like that and joking their coiled hair. Then they would do the big chop and be disappointed in the texture that’s growing as if they didn’t know their true texture 🤨. It was the saddest mess ever and it’s still happening! I stopped relaxing 7 years ago when I developed uterine fibroids. Some said there was a link to relaxers and fibroids, so I didn't want to take the chance and continue relaxing. It's been hell trying to recover naturally from fibroid. Drs wanted me to have a hysterectomy but I refused. I've spent the last 3 years trying to heal and finally my body healed. While natural hair maintenance is a lot of work, the chemicals in relaxers are just not worth it. People have the right to do whatever they want to their hair as they are the ones that must do the work to care for their hair each day. Just make sure you research and make informed choices for yourself. Very informative video.

I am in my late 50's and have always been wearing my hair natural all my life and will continue to wear it natural the rest of my life. I was soo happy to see young and older African American women starting to wear their hair natural. I was even hopping that women would start wearing their hair natural a long time ago way before the natural hair movement. I am disappointed to see and hear about women going back to using relaxers. But, people can do what ever they want with their own hair. I have always loved my moms large afro back in the 70's. When she wanted a straight hair style she would press her hair, then wash it the next time and leave it natural. All natural hair textures are beautiful from loose curls to very tight kinky curls. It shows our uniqueness.

Let's not pretend that black women's obsession with relaxers & straightening their hair wasn't originally rooted in texturism & antiblackness. It's more common in the UK so I had to buy it and do it myself, which wasn't ideal. It's supposed to last 6 washes (although mine lasted a lot longer), so it's not permanent. And you have two ways of doing it depending on if you want to wear your hair only straight or curly or straight (versatile). I chose the versatile and was pretty happy with the results. I think too many of us don't do research before we go to get these styles and services - from maintenance to reversion to the stylists' credentials and skill level. A lot of us throw our money to supposed professionals without vetting the pro and are later devastated when we leave the chair with PTSD. I keep it simple and I respect that my hair has a certain set of standards. It's usually the folks who don't have that repsect that end up losing their hair. Sorry to those women.

Relaxing, straightening, or stretching your hair is NOT inherently bad and has very reasonable and effecient purposes. The problem is that the internalized belief that the natural shrunken state of afro textured hair is undesireable, unprofessional and difficult IS inherently anti-black. Peroid. Natural or relaxed, we as black people should do whatever we want with our hair without reinforcing ideals about beauty and respectabilty through an anti-black hierarchy. If we ain't tryna be 100% free, can we atleast be free of the hierarchy? 😩

I would never do relaxers, but keratin treatments are THE TRUTH! My hair is so silky straight, but I can get my curls back as soon as I hit the shower and use some curl cream. And also about extensions: when I was a heavy extension wearer(Itips and clip ins) my hair would never progress past next length, although my hair care was on point… or some I thought. The itips tangled badly at my roots and wear heavy when wet. The clips pulled at my scalp and caused tenderness and bald spots. When you are using long extensions and you have short hair, all that weight will break the hair over time. Now I’m going through life with my real hair and I’m finally just now creeping up on bra strap length. I can’t wait to see where my hair will be next year

which keratin treatment do you use? The ones I've seen, the hair was still straight when wet, which I don't want. I use a texture release and it makes the silk presses last. Plus when I want it curly I just use gel.

I definitely think it depends on the person. I know some people have bad health issues after relaxing their hair but I agree it’s about maintenance. But the thing is people don’t tell you that after suggesting you relax. I was natural for almost five years before I relaxed my hair again late last year because it was getting too difficult to deal with (mainly because I’m in college and I was jam packed last year with two jobs and classes and it got to the point that I barely had time to care for my hair because I was either in class, working, doing hw or sleeping (something I barely did btw. At the most four hours a night 🥴)) but that’s because I genuinely thought I just needed to relax it and straighten it out. Just washing with my typical shampoo and conditioner wasn’t enough, I was having to buy extra things to take care of my hair to keep it strong and healthy since it was relaxed now and I simply did not have time for that (like the whole reason I relaxed because I was under the impression that it was wake up comb and go) nor did I have the money to keep buying all that stuff. And I did research but maybe I didn’t research in the right places or research ENOUGH. My hair was BREAKING like I was losing a lot of hair to the point I just had to big chop again. Did that in March. It’s definitely for some people but if you do not have time to do your hair and you think relaxing is the way to go, it’s not. The only thing you don’t have to worry about is detangling. If you have a decent length and thick hair like I do, there’s still a lot of maintenance that goes in it. Would be better to just get a straight natural looking wig if you want straight hair.

He blessed us with hair that never stops growing (*unless you have a medical issue). Your hair actually won’t stop breaking. So, if you can simply stop it from breaking you’ll retain length! Treat those strands like your babies. From basic ponytails to complex styles including installs and take downs, you’ve gotta ensure you don’t break it along the way…ESPECIALLY if it’s on the drier end of the spectrum. And most importantly… please please please remember ladies, that if it causes ANY form of breakage or tension…IT IS NOT A “PROTECTIVE“ STYLE. You’re welcome.

I was natural since 2012 and went with the relaxer last year. Honestly one of the best decisions of my life for two main reasons; first reason is it used to take me forever to wash my hair. I love hair care so it would take me all day. Now I wash and it takes about 30 minutes max. And because of how I used to care for my natural hair I am now a pro at caring for my relaxed hair. Secondly, relaxers help me see the hair growth. With my natural hair I was constantly thinking "is my hair growing" but with the relaxer you can see the new growth and I feel like it grows my hair. I still love natural hair, and I love the way I looked with my natural hair but I like the relaxed look and it's so much easier to maintain.

I'd rather be natural and silk press when I feel like having straight hair. I was surprised by how much movement my hair had after I got my first silk press. It feels 100x better than relaxed hair. If you are relaxed, your hair is either stiff because you have to put in a lot of product to combat the dryness and breakage or it has some movement because you used less product, but it will break and won't grow past a certain point.

It wasn't until the last 5 years when I started accepting my natural hair and found a workable routine. Then I got PTSD and depression and couldn't keep up with anything let alone the time it requires to do my natural hair as an outdoors person. Before going natural my relaxed hair was HEALTHY. Thick, long, strong. Why? Because I had a solid routine in place and because my mother was educated and informed on proper relaxer application/maintence. It's unfortunate how improper care caused many to have traumatic experiences with their relaxed hair. Its chemical at the end of the day and not for every hair type. However, it's 2022 Let's stop feeding the texturism debate, better yet let's stop minimizing black women down to our hair.

That’s what I say too. The movement normalized black peoples natural hair texture and allowed us to learn how to care for it for it. Now each woman can make the choice on how she wants to wear it. We should be able to wear it straight and silky if we want to without it being called self hate. I don’t even wear mine like that but I think it’s ridiculous and seems jealous how upset some naturals get about other women’s hair. If relaxers cause health problems, why do you care? They chose to take the risk and you don’t have to relax yours. People take the same risks with surgeries and the chemicals in food aren’t great either.

While it is absolutely your "choice" to get a relaxer, that doesn't negate the fact that getting a relaxer to make your hair "more manageable" is rooted in texturism & white supremacy/European beauty standards. Nothing is unmanageable about black women's kinky hair. _You_ just didn't want to put in the time or effort to care for it, or you didn't use the correct techniques & had false expectations for your hair. But our hair is absolutely beautiful & manageable in it's natural, undefined, kinky state. I hate relaxers, I would never use them again, but as long as people are educated about the drawbacks and dangers of relaxers and how to use them properly, I have no energy for what other people do to their own hair. Needless to say, my daughter *begged* me for a relaxer when she was growing up, to which my answer was a resounding and consistent “Hell no!” 😂 She now has tailbone-length hair that has never been touched by chemicals. In the 90s, I wore a bob and used a mild relaxer. It didn’t straighten my hair, but left my curls loose and bouncy as it dried throughout the day and minimized shrinkage and the need for a lot of products. However, at that time, I didn’t know how to transition without experiencing extreme breakage. Every time I grew out any strength relaxer product, I had to cut my hair. Thankfully, my hair grows fast. Also, wearing short, natural hair is not a problem for me. I kept my hair in a short natural state for years while in my 20s and early 30s. I haven’t worn a relaxer since early 2002 and never will again.

Tape ins, I-tips and micro links are for people who can afford maintenance every two weeks or so. Same goes for lash extensions and to a certain extent, nail enhancements. Keeping these on too long ends up causing unnecessary damage and stress, leaving you ‘worse’ than you were before. I’m all for the democratization of beauty, but there’s a reason why until recently, only celebrities were getting these services (which are not new at all) and only a few specially trained professionals were providing them. I thought about going back to relaxer. Idk how to style my own hair so it would be easier for me but i also have a scalp condition so im scared a relaxer will cause more issues

But what's the difference between this and using flexi rods for a natural style, even people on the streets with curls have manipulated them in some way

The "new" hairstylists are charging women so much just to style natural hair that it is becoming ridiculously expensive. I understand why women are relaxing their hair again.

A lot of these hairstylists don’t know how to install tapes in nor give advice on it or even provide the right type of hair smh.

Tape ins are literally like leave out sew ins … it’s not the stylist fault that you don’t know how to take care of your hair after you leave let’s be honest. You saw the process and you know what it is before you go and you know your hair type and how it works in weather changes . Think smarter

They are choosing to relax their hair and cannot blame society. And they shouldn't speak on non-black women wearing afro hairstyles!!!

So you just can hear to stalk BW, tell us what we can and can not do. Then make it about you. You mofos are weirdos. BW straightening their hair is not trying to look like non-blk women. Get over yourself. I am SPEAKING on non-blacks wearing afro styles! You look like a damn fool and you can't! You will never look as good as BW. On top of that when we straighten our hair. You wish your hair was that thick and beautiful.
