Woo it's been good while since I made one of these. I made the video extra long to make up for slacking for so long. This entry of Virtua Fighter Lore will feature the martial arts master who is revered by many for resurrecting the lost art of the Tiger Swallow Fist, and reviled by his own daughter for abandoning his family in the process. The one and only Lau Chan! Join Segalacious as he delves into Lau's character origins, the mysteries of his martial arts, story line, and some of his most incredible fighting moves. Let's get into it!

It is also noted that the author of the Kenji Manga and Yu Suzuki were actually good friends or at least have a good relationship/respect with each other. I stumbled on the Manga because of my history of martial arts and wanted to learn more on Hakkyoku-ken (Bajiquan) and been hooked onto it to this day. I highly recommend that Manga for either martial arts practitioners or just readers that are into the martial art genre of Manga.

I remember when both Street Fighter and Virtua Fighter animes came out, definitely both were entertaining, Street Fighter had this bigger budget and it was trying to tell a deep story and also trying to look fresh, but then Virtua Fighter had this simple story of martial arts, I loved Kage Maru of course as I am a big fan of this sort of characters and lore, but with Virtua Fighter the story became more complex eventually in an organic way, and it always kept martial arts as the focus, I liked that and to be honest I can say that I enjoyed more that anime than Street Fighter.

Speaking of Tao Pai Pai, and Super Saiyan Goku. I don't think it's a coincidence that Seiichi Ishii is a fan of Dragon Ball. Since Virtua Fighter, Tekken, and, Tobal have Dragon Ball inspired characters, Kazuya Mishima is basically Vegeta, and Tobal's character design was done by Akira Toriyama. There are exceptions but most of the games Ishii made have Dragon Ball references.

Silver Haired Devil Haha that's so true. Especially since Akira Toriyama did the art design for the Tobal games as well. I actually read in an interview with Seiichii Ishii where he stated that Lau actually is based off of Tao Pai Pai. Not like we couldn't already tell lol

Lau only cares his own family and doing for what is best for his daughter. But he's not a bad father what Pai Chan thinks he is. If Lau Chan dies in Virtua Fighter 6 I feel sorry for Lau Chan players. No one can withstand the Koen Ken. Great video, Virtua Bros.

Great job Segalicious! You've captured my favorite fighting game character quite well and given deeper insight into his mysterious fighting style, a style I hope to learn some day as it is awesome. I've actually learned quite a bit of lore I hadn't previously known so thanks for that. Good luck with all your new responsibilities, but of course, I look forward to your next video in the series whenever you get around to it.

Belart Wright Occult Gaming Yeah I wondered if Koenken was cursed myself but I couldn't find enough evidence to justify making the claim. I feel like Lau might be able to slow the effects of his illnes using his Chi, so he may survive longer than most.

I won't mind AM-2 to add a hung gar fighter since the series was based on "Kenji." Hung gar and Lau's style are based upon Shaolin tiger.

Good stuff! I don't know if you looked into the Project X Zone games, but in at least one of them Heihachi Mishima shows some admiration for Lau in a brief dialog involving Pai, which given the Mishima family history can be a bit of a double-edged sword...

Great video! I like that you showed actual clips of traditional northern Chinese martial arts! Is it really Huyanquan (Koenken)? It's been difficult for me to verify if some of the videos I've been looking up are really of that style or not.

Yeah I have some sympathy for him too. He's actually a very talented person. A virtuoso of cooking and kung Fu. Him dying is like a Van Gogh dying or something.

It was also noted that Lei-Fei was ordered by the Shaolin Temple to assimilate Lau's techniques and dispose of him when he has acquired all of the knowledge of Koen-Ken.

Lau and Pai were two of my mains. The only one left is Wolf(I think in 4, he could do a stone cold stunner like move that was difficult to do and did little damage). . Great video as always sir. I would always piss off my brother with Lau.Since I was a little kid, he was the only character I could use. I'm not familiar with Virtua Fighter 5 tournaments, but from what I've seen, I don't usually see Lau too much. Is he banned? Also don't worry about the wait. There are only so many virtua fighter characters, so it's best to take your time and make them as best and full of info as can be. Hearing their lore for the first time is really cool with this presentation. Can't wait to get Yakuza and finally be able to play VF5. Darn 360s never work when I get them.

Phoenix Splash TV Hey man! Yeah Lau is pretty great, but no he isn't banned from tournaments. The thing is he's a fairly direct and mostly offensive character. Most of the high level players know how to a answer or at least avoid an epic Lau rushdown. But I actually have seen him in quite a few tournaments.

Following your videos I'm assuming that Kage Maru is next.... And that's going to be a lot 'cause Kage is kind of like protagonist of Virtua Fighter story (at least that's how I see him) and his fighting style is complex. Good luck handling Kage. I encourage you to do it 'cause these videos are awesome for VF fans and to me Kage Maru is one of the most fascinating characters in VF. Good work with Akira, Pai, Lau, Sarah and Jacky.

Jorge Bermudez yes Kage is who I have my sights set on next. I can see how he could be viewed as a protagonist, although Jacky and Akira are considered the main characters of the game. Definitely a complex character. It's going to be a challenge

It might be worth having a look at Kage's appearance in Project X Zone 2 - I don't know how much closure he gets with his mother in the VF games, but PXZ2 tries to tackle that too.

Quick question would you ever do a video on character's / martial arts and character types you would like to see in virtua fighter . If Final fight can live on in street fighter or do you feel there a bit to ridiculous ?

Picasso Marble you know that's a great question. I was actually on a podcast where I was asked that question. My response was to put in Ryo Hazuki and Lan Di from Shenmue and maybe Kiryu and Goro from Yakuza. As for as martial arts styles I'm really not sure. Maybe Krav Maga or something? It seems like VF has covered a lot of realistic fighting styles already.

Picasso Marble putting a streets of rage character in the game would be cool. At this point getting Sega to do anything Virtua Fighter seems like an uphill battle. But I think it would be cool to put Axel or somebody from Streets of Rage in VF 6 for sure.

J H Haha it's party that and partly personal preference. I did Akira, Jacky, Sarah and Pai first because they were all in DOA5 LR and also because people were asking for them the most. It kind of makes sense to talk about Lau after Pai because much of their stories overlap. I think doing Kage, Lion, Shun Di, Wolf, and Jeffery before others would make the most sense because they have the most developed story lines and also have plenty of OVAs, animes, manga, and other resources to draw from compared to some of the newer characters.

Because a handful of Koenken masters against the Chinese Imperial army are going to loose to superior numbers. Also, because everyone who uses Koenken contracts Ligma. It's an incurable disease.
