On this day in 1959 the iconic ‘Mini’ car made its debut under two names; ‘Austin Seven’ and ‘Morris Mini-Minor’. By 1962, both simply became known as the ‘Mini’ - ‘truly a people’s car’. Here’s how Movietone reported on the launch.
The British Motor Corporation's "Mini-Minor". The 850 cc engine is mounted across the car, in both versions of this newcomer. In fact there's hardly any difference between Morris and Austin "Minis". The cost of round about five-hundred is mentioned. Performance is said to include a top-speed of seventy miles an hour, and should cruise at fifty-five miles to the gallon.
