Launching A Life Boat From A Cruise Ship

During a Caribbean cruise, minding my own business in my cabin, I heard an unusual noise coming from the balcony! I grabbed my camera, and was surprised to see that they were launching a lifeboat right below my balcony. I had a great view of it as the crane extended out, and then a winch lowered the lifeboat down to the water.
In case you're wondering why they were lowering a lifeboat...
No, there wasn't any kind of emergency! This was the Viking Sea, not the Costa Concordia! They were simply going to use the lifeboat as a "tender"... to ferry passengers ashore at a small island where the ship was not able to dock at a pier.
But I bet a lot of folks won't read this description and will post funny comments speculating why the lifeboats were being used! For me, that will be the most entertaining part of the video... reading the comments!
Financial disclosure:
Viking Ocean Cruises invited me aboard the Viking Sea as their guest, at no charge. However, they had no control over the content of this video.

On a Royal Caribbean cruise to Maine and the Canadian Maritimes, they launched lifeboats as tenders in Bar Harbor. I watched the retrieval of the of the boats before sailing to Portland. A year earlier in Skagway, Alaska, on another Royal Caribbean ship, they launched several boats and did some laps around the harbor. A crew member told me that they do practice launching boats and insure that the motors and equipment are in good working order.

I had a cabin on Oasis of the Seas right above where they launched a lifeboat for a training exercise. It was loud, but fun to watch.

Cool video Jim! I would have liked to see them hooking it back up and bringing it aboard as well. I'm sure that is a fun one to watch as they bob around while trying to get the hooks secured.

Yeah, that's probably MUCH more difficult than launching it!

I think there should be a drill were guests loaded on to the boat to have some idea how really difficult it is going to be if you have to use them in an emergency. The life boats they use as tenders are configured differently inside. It would make an interesting excursion.
@megank3358

I think it would be interesting too. They only thing is the boats would gain so much wear and tear. Would really have to limit this excursion if they ever decided to do it.

Usually if no control and a free ride, they are not trying to hide anything and not fearful of any comments. I just wonder if these rectangular lifeboats have rite side up capabilities ?

Jim, were you aboard the cruise that had the norovirus outbreak?
@JimZim
@JimZim 5 лет назад
Yes. There were something like 31 cases of Norovirus out of 925 passengers. So, 97% of the passengers were fine. I was impressed with how Viking handled it, too. Out of all 46 of our cruises, this was only the 2nd time there was a Norovirus outbreak, as far as we know. Viking handled it much better than the other cruise line did.

What if the power does not work how do you launch the boat
@JimZim
@JimZim 6 месяцев назад
I've never been a crew member on a ship, but I can make a guess based on my career working at a nuclear power plant. At a nuke plant, safety equipment ALWAYS has a special connection to emergency backup power sources, in case the normal power source isn't functioning. I imagine it's the same on ships.

I hate having to tender into a port. I like to just hop off and back on.

We only did it twice in the ten day cruise... and on one of those days we just tendered ashore, and by the time we were ready to come back onboard, the ship had docked and we just walked on. So, really, one and a half times in 10 days!

Jim that's crazy! I've never heard of a ship docking after tendering guests. I hate tendering myself would be thrilled to only have to do it one way at port.
