This weeks adventure brings us the Laura Ingalls Wilder De Smet, South Dakota Homestead. We get step on the actual land where the Ingalls Family built their residence and farm. Also, we get to go on a horse drawn carriage ride to go to school and church. It was so neat to learn about how the family lived in that time.

Just so you know - SILVER LAKE is a lake that isn't very deep but is between DeSmet and Lake Preston, a town I grew up in that is the next over to the west of DeSmet

Thank for this video, fascinating. One little thing: the expression "sleep tight" does NOT come from rope beds. The expression only dates back to 1864, when rope beds (after 300 years) were being replaced by beds with spring mattresses. "Tight" was just a 19th century expression for "good" or "well." The addition of "don't let the bed bugs bite" only dates from the 1950s.

Clothes kept their color better than even the best jeans today - because you didn't let the jeans soak in water and soap which causes the dyes to get leeched from them and washed away! It is beautiful and an amazing place to live and grow up near. All of the visitors are welcome with open arms. It's even now, an amazing place to be!

I enjoyed your visits to the places where Laura lived during my elementary days during the 50s I started reading her books the school library tin my Classroom so us girls would get to read the books first the school didn’t buy them all at once but we would pass the book one to another as we finished the book. I bought a whole set for my granddaughter a few years ago when I visited Laura’s home in Mansfield MO if you hadn’t you need to go there and do a tour. I looked her books

I was a big fan of Little House on the Prairie, I love reading the books and when my daughter was younger she also read them. We live in a 200 year old town with lots of log cabins. The church we attended just turned 200 years old last year.we have several farns. If you ever have a chance to come visit us, there is allot of history in Burlington county In New Jersey.

I live near De Smet in one of the teeny tiny farm towns (I'm closer to Lake Preston than De Smet tbh) and I love watching people’s reactions to SD. My dad occasionally works for the people who most of the cats come from at Laura Ingalls. One of our cats was going to there but we got her instead. She was a sweetheart but a menace to the coyotes and muskrats.

I love Laura Ingalls Wilder. Did you get to the house on 3rd st. That is the actually the last one. They moved into town and there is store that is still there that was they visited. I was there before the homestead was opened.

I'd like to know more about the Wilder family, Almanzo's parents. Why did they leave New York and what happened to them after they moved to Minnesota?

The Wilder family lived near Malone during Almanzo's growing up years and were quite prosperous. However, drought caused crops to suffer several years in a row and the family decided it was time to seek better farmland. In 1875, the family moved to Spring Valley, Minnesota.

We need to PROTECT Hank Williams Beechwood home like we did Laura Ingalls Wilder's! BTW I grew up in Lake Preston, South Dakota next to DeSmet. Ingalls House was built in 1887

was the house still the original one that Pa built? or a replica?

It is a replica built in the style that Pa described. The problem was the family didn't become famous until many years later, so there was no thought put into saving any of the original homesteads.
