These freaking chords and picking patterns. What a stunningly well-crafted song. Mind. Blown. Standing ovation.

I really need to learn to finger pick...not easy to do with the voice and veses and all the rest - strumming is so much easier...:D

ToeJ - Joni did what first? The chords and picking patterns? I’m sure Joni picked them up from other artists who came before, as well.

@@gedison5551 They're Joni's own words. She is the godmother to all female singer songwriters.
@gedison5551
@gedison5551 3 года назад
you can't leave this empty - What are Joni’s own words? And, whoops, but there are some great, just less historically well-known female folk singer-songwriters from other countries who came before Joni Mitchell. Joni is, undoubtedly, an icon and a longtime favorite of mine, but the position of “godmother to all female singer songwriters” doesn’t necessarily belong to her, just because she was an extraordinary talent, skilled, had an amazing voice, and was commercially successful. To name a few: Elizabeth Cotten (a Black woman folk singer songwriter, around long before JM ); Violeta Parra (Chilean folk artist, singer-songwriter who started out in 1939). I think Judy Collins was active before Joni came along, and she’s easily a godmother, too. If you haven’t heard the song “Gracias a la vida,” by Violeta Parra, please find it and listen, asap. (It was also covered/recorded by Mercedes Sosa and Joan Baez.) Just because White North Americans may not know about these women, doesn’t mean they weren’t laying the groundwork for future female folk singer songwriters to come.

Me partner has always had a thing, we’ve been together ten years so far, and if he hears a song he thinks I’ll like he texts me it. He sent me her name, and this is the first video what came up. I don’t even know if this is the song he heard yet as he’s not home, but I love it, and him, already xx

ToeJ - Laura Marling is clearly influenced by Joni Mitchell, and that’s a compliment to Joni, but Marling does her own thing. She has many original songs that very much showcase her own sound, and, likely, as Joni Mitchell’s music and sound evolved over time, reaching into other genres, so will Laura Marling’s. Her voice and musicianship are strong, she can do edgy and sweet, and will most likely have a long career ahead of her. It’s fantastic to have a new generation of folk and folk-influenced musicians, and I welcome artists like Marling and Johnny Flynn. Not sure why you feel the need to take her down a notch with your multiple “rip-off” comments under this video.

It is superb. This is my introduction to her and I love it (I am a life long Joni Mitchell fan) Sadly, I am also an irritating pedant and I don't think you can call one song a "body of work". In fact, I know you can't, unless it's the only song she ever wrote. Body of work Noun body of work (plural bodies of work) The entirety of the creative or academic output produced by a particular individual or unit.
@andrewjones2132
@andrewjones2132 4 года назад
@@emdiar6588 Song For Our Daughter is the also the name of her album, and that can be called a body of work.
@emdiar6588
@emdiar6588 4 года назад
@@andrewjones2132 No it can't. The phrase 'body of work' has a specific definition. It means the entire collection of an artist's creative output. 'The Complete Works of Shakespeare' is a body of work. Hamlet or Macbeth are not.
