Laurel A. Stocks. I'm an APRN, and I became a nurse practitioner to take care of patients, in particular, I enjoy older adults and very complicated issues. I love to sit and listen to people, and that really helps me figure out how to take care of them. So, when I first meet a patient, I like to know a little bit about their background and their history and meet some of their family members so I can really understand their medical issues and how it affects them in their daily activities. And also, help their family understand how to help take care of them, how to take their medicines correctly, and when things are not going well, that they'll give us a call and come in and sit and learn more about how they're doing and take care of these issues before they become difficult.
I really enjoy doing rounds and sitting down with a patient, actually seeing how they feel, not just on a physical basis, but also how are they recovering, how is it affecting their ability to get up and do what they want to do and leave the hospital and go home and get back to their normal activities. And it's really important to include the family and make sure that everyone is on the same page.
I'm originally from Louisville, Kentucky. I was raised by local professionals who encouraged me to do what I wanted. And at the University of Kentucky I decided to go into nursing because it provided so many opportunities, including going to graduate education. And after doing education for nurses for many years, I decided to be a nurse practitioner and take it to the next level, because I really felt I had a good connection with patients and I was able to stay in patient care that way. And I've been in Louisville now, again, for about 10 years after having done a career on the East Coast.
For fun. I have several animals, including some cats and some horses. I like to go to competitions and enjoy watching other people that are friends of mine compete, and then just get out outdoors and hike and enjoy a beautiful area that we have so many nice parks in this area.
