It's also fun to print the outboard gear while it's in logic I/O. Very helpful for recall and to reuse the outboard gear on another source.

I can’t tell you how much I love the idea of, not only a standing level mixing position, but a console that faces away from the screen. Very cool.

Some days when I'm not needing the computer I can be on the no screen side the whole time just playing with the Tascam MS-16 one inch tape machine. I've written Tascam to have them start building tape machines again because have a lot of students interested in them and they are cool to look at and to enjoy real tape compression/tone/sound but their reply was it's too expensive. ☹ @tascam

@@LaurenPassarelli I use a Tascam atr-60-16! It’s an absolute beast of a machine, and stable too! It’s really hard to get people to really appreciate how the process of making music on tape can be immensely gratifying. For me, the sound is just part of why I love it!

@@stevedoesnt Fantastic, Steve! How fun. I almost got one that big and another was 2 inch 24 tk that big. But geez it's like having a washing machine in my space and I wasn't sure how much was going to use it. So this racked 16 tk was a good fit. Now to use it more! I made many albums on my Tascam 38 half inch 8 tk and this sounds and looks like it so it was a fun reunion to get this. I don't like tedius editing of any kind. I'd rather play something or sing it again. I like capturing performances. I forgot about the time rewinding! Fun stuff. It rocks to be musicians!

I really enjoyed this video, it’s really what this hobby is about. I remember really losing interest in making music a few years ago because I was trying to make music a business and forgetting about why I got into it. It’s about enjoying the process and having fun; this video definitely brings that feeling back. The message is, it’s my music to do what I want and enjoy it; I’m/we are not paying for the studio session so have fun. Thank you so much for sharing. 🍻Cheers

@@patrickmusolino8673 Oh the 3000's are so cool. And I was curious about the HD24s years ago, still am. That's an awesome setup. I see people are still selling them on ebay... Did you ever use another DAW or always Harrison mixbuss? I'd love a whole Harrison setup. Fascinating. Do you mix in surround or Dolby Atmos? What do you save those mixes to? I had an Acura with the ELS system in it and I was trying to save my surround mixes on a format I could play in my car. Non existent back then. I love the idea of no screen yet we can do so much in the box I've gotten used to the flexibility.

I’m just putting together an updated tour through video, how it was an unfinished basement and i had the studs and insulation removed to put in the owens corning basement finishing system which is aluminum studs and insulation walls, and a dri core sub floor and then bamboo floor. So far i’ve used my Tegeler Channels and Audient to get to tape or Logic. I’ve had fun with all the outboard gear either on the sub busses of the Audient or printing the I/O to Logic.

How do you like that tape machine vs printing in Logic? I’m asking because I have a chance very soon to buy some new gear for my studio, and I’m old school (in my 50’s) and I grew up tweaking knobs and all that stuff. I had pretty much sworn off ever working with tape because so many people say it’s difficult to maintain those machines, etc. But I discovered your videos when looking at vids for that Audient console the other day and you really gave me hope that I could get a good tape machine for far cheaper than I thought. (I’ve found that exact machine now online for pretty reasonable prices). I also found this other kid Mario on RU-vid who has a tutorial explaining how to use it. My point is-you guys got me really hopeful. I guess what I want to know is: 1. Do you think there are limitations to it that a newb like me needs to know about? 2. After you’ve printed to tape, you can send it back into logic to get the finished product converted into digital format, correct? 3. Do you have to calibrate the tape machine and all that stuff? Is it difficult to do? Anyway. Thank you again for this content. It’s very inspiring. And thank you for any reply. :)

'Elloooooo! I had a 1/2 inch 8 track Tascam 38 I bought new, for years and never had a problem with it. Before that I had a Teac 2340 1/4 inch 4 track. My thoughts have been folks had trouble with maintenance on the 2 inch tape machines probably because they were always in constant use and needed round the clock techs for all the sessions. You can play back line signals from tape through a mixer to your interface connected to Logic. If you're used to Logic you may find rewinding the tape and waiting and adding tracks to be a bit slower than in the box but it's fun. I missed my 1/2 inch and was considering a 2 inch 24 track but it's the size of a washing machine! So I loved that I found this one and it was rack-able, not in a big housing size washing machine casing. The limitations would be cutting and pasting: on tape you need to replay the part or re-sing it. The cost of tape is crazy but ATR magnetics still sells tape. I record a part or a whole song and then tape over it once I dump the tracks to Logic reusing the tape. I have even played back a project in Logic and rolled tape and recorded new parts to tape and then played them into Logic and lined up the new tracks. I really notice the saturation on drums. The louder spikier transients really soften nicely from tape. But really it's for the fun of playing with the machine. The sound vs a warm tube piece of gear or good plugin is subtle. I can't tell the difference. My release, Night Vision had one of the songs basic tracks recorded to 2 inch tape. You can't tell which song. The mixes are all similar in quality. I guess this is the best example of, "it's about the journey not the getting there". When I was a kid dreaming of a studio they all had consoles and tape machines. I love digital and all of it's flexibilities. And I love buttons, knobs and switches. I do hear a huge difference using nice out board gear vs plugins. I have run test tones and the machine is calibrated. The person who sold it to me through reverb.com had it serviced before he shipped it to me and calibrated. It's very heavy and looks like it would need to come out of the rack to be calibrated and I can guarantee I will not be doing that. I can't budge the thing. You can't get this wrong. I say satisfy your curiosity then like any other piece of gear you get tired of, sell or trade it. You won't get stuck with anything. The fun and desire is what it's all about. Some pix of the 38 and 2340 here: laurenpassarelli.com/night-vision-the-questions-the-interview/

Thanks, Lauren. That’s all great information. It’s really got me thinking. I’m the same as you: when I was a kid, I dreamt of a studio with a desk and tape machine, etc. It’s funny: even if there are great digital emulations of pieces of gear, I have this weird thing where, if I know it’s an emulation-especially of a piece of gear I’ve never owned (I had this with the Townsend Labs mic thing that supposedly emulates all these great mics)I start getting down on it. I’ll be asking myself: is this really like the real thing? Ha. I know I shouldn’t care if they sound identical, but…it’s purely psychological. I just lose heart when playing an amp emulation vs. a real amp. Or playing electric drums wired into Superior Drummer or something. I don’t care how great they sound. They don’t feel “real” to me at all. I know I should be able to move past all that, but I never can, so instead of trying to change myself anymore, I’ve given in and decided it must be because that’s how I started playing when I was a kid. I got my first Roland Jupiter 8 synth back when I was 17 or so, and I was hooked. Anyway. Thank you very much again for your very helpful reply. I will continue to follow you with interest. :)

Question, when you make fader moves ITB, how do you deal with the fact that the analog comps (eg Distressors) in the console will inevitably be affected by those fader moves? Thanks for the video!
@LaurenPassarelli
@LaurenPassarelli Год назад
Depending upon what's being sent where tracks will be effected by what I change ITB, a whole lotta tweaking going on. BUT, it depends on the routing. Same as ITB not everything is routed to the same buss. On the console only certain tracks are assigned to each sub group fader. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QUyHxKRnjF0.html Quite a lot of unnecessary possible choices. But total fun. I can tweak anything anywhere ITB, on the console, as I'm recording on the way into the box, onto tape, then into the box, whatever I choose.
