I had an ex who was recently out of an abusive marriage. She was having trouble finding work at first, as well as him actively fucking with us, and our unequal financial power dynamic exacerbated her trauma.

I think it's in part inferiority complex. They feel like there's nothing they could ever bring to the relationship and any partner would leave them given the choice.
