People still line up to play with Laurie. We bay area folk are SO LUCKY to have her here, when she's not in the mountains. She writes, sings, plays, yodels, tells jokes, and carries the music we love. Thanks for the post, and THANKS LAURIE!
She sang that for me acapella after a house concert after I told her I loved her cover of that song. I melted and was honored and probably 3 shades of red.
LL won a Grammy for "True Life Blues: The Songs of Bill Monroe," 1997, and was twice named Female Vocalist of the Year by the IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association). She hails from the San Francisco area.
No one can beat Laurie at this song. She sings it as if she wrote this great song I get chills listening to her sing. The Harmony wasn't bad either. Jim Sullivan
I'm telling you what's the truth, this is THE best version of this song on RU-vid! I love this woman's voice. Might she be an angel? I almost didn't recognize Sam Bush!!! He's a kid!
Thanks BluegrassLibrary for posting this great bluegrass number written by Melissa Monroe sung by Laurie Lewis. This is how bluegrass is supposed to be,simple humble words that hits the heart, thanks,Eric.
Ive only just come across Laurie Lewis, happened to see her on the front of Acoustic Guitar magazine, Im really glad i did, fantastic voice and musicality - have now ordered a few CDs from Amazon. Dont get exposed to enough of this in the UK, thank goodness for You Tube!!

HAPPY (65th) BIRTHDAY, LAURIE!!! (born 28 September 1950)
It is the most hauntingly beautiful song. It is elegantly played and sung. I understand it all too well. Thank you Melissa Monroe. Thanks for the post.
playing upright bass is not Roy Huskey, Jr., it is Gene Libbea from Nashville Bluegrass Band. and yes, as has been already pointed out a while ago, the guitar player is David Grier.
First time I hav ever come across this lady - looks like I missed her in her prime. Her voice & song in general gets better as the song progresses. Her voice strains a little on the higher notes in recent performances.
The moon helps us see night in a clearer way. Spirituality is the moon, it shows who is a star in this world, by showing good personas in a spiritual light.
Thursday nights. the Red Vest Pizza Parlor in El cerrito. Laurie and the Good Old Persons. they played for years there in the 70's. kick is, the joint would announce the pizza order numbers over a mike--during the songs!
+greekflatpicker I notice your request was ignored. Bummer. We always need to give credit where credit is due. Good for you; bad for bluegrass library.
I am going through and typing Amen on all the David Grier comments!! He is one of the most significant guitarist to grace the world of bluegrass and roots music!
@k4rotube Yes, I think you are right. Look at Nashville Bluegrass Band - Blue Train. There you can see him clearly. There are two bass players who are easy to recognize, Roy Huskey Jr and the way he moves his right arm and Mark Schatz who is jumping up and down.
Sometime between 1990 and 1993 - American Music Shop only ran that long. Laurie has gone grey in the intervening 25 years, and her voice has darkened a little. Good genes - she's at least 40 in this clip, but she looks and sounds 15 years younger.
Why bother comparing her voice to Alison Krauss? They're not even similar. You might compare Suzanne Cox to Krauss, but why Lewis? That's like comparing Vince Gill's singing to Rod Stewart's. And sandpaper? You gotta be kidding. Well, Rod Stewart's, maybe.
