Man that kit sounds so great. Lets also not downplay the importance of the ROOM. A good drum kit, tuned well, in a good sounding room with a good drummer like Blair is MAGIC.
Just a suggestion about how to keep the mics from getting hit when the lights dim, put a small piece of reflective tape on the joint where the body and the windscreen meet. It has saved many a mic in clubs! And its easily purchased at any office supply!
So cool hearing the different approaches from a live touring perspective versus a recording perspective.. I have been alive Sound Engineer and and done hundreds and hundreds of shows over 10,000 seats. And I also on a commercial recording studio. My approaches to making the kick drum are completely different in each environment. And I really like what the FOH engineer was saying about the other instruments on the kid being his enemy, because that’s exactly the way I approach it. One thing to note when trying to isolate symbol bleed from tom mics is the way that a sound wave emanates from the symbols allows you to move the microphone closer to the symbol, but looking at the drum and you can isolate the bleed from the brass more like getting closer to it, because the soundwave has not had the time to disperse yet. This improves your isolation. Most people think it’s the reverse of that. I am really loving the series
So cool, good job! One thing that wasn't mentioned in this video was that the tom mic bleed sound was really good one. I think that is what truly makes these mics stand out from the traditional options like 421´s (thou these battle in the Josephson category). Need.
I CAN NOT wait for the kick drum mic to drop (idk if that’s being worked on) but I am extra happy to buy a set of Tom mics. Really excited to see what the snom sounds like
i cant believe it takes all these people to get an utterly unremarkable drum sound in a multi million dollar studio on a legendary console...., just an observation
IKR. And these mics have a 100% to 400% mark up over the Audix D2's D4's, EV ND-44's & 46, sE;s & Sure 57's . I might still buy a Snare & Tom mic just to see what the fuss is all about😛 . Wait till I tell my old lady I just spent $800 bucks on 2 mic's lol (I'm not even an Audio engineer) 😂🤣😂
did they track into Pro Tools/the analog to digital converters too hot? Kind of looks like it at 20:29 For raw drum tracks without equalization/compression, these sound perfectly fine.
Do you understand that this is done to get different perspectives between a live sound perspective and a creative studio creation perspective? They are demoing the microphones. This is not a tutorial on just how to get a good drum sound in a world class studio. It’s a demonstration of new drum microphones. The company that owns this RU-vid channel is Lawton Audio, and they are the manufacturer of the microphones being used. Maybe you missed that part
@@andygreen5565 Dude, get a Clarion for the kick too. I know its pricier, but I use it on every record I make. World class drummers listen to the playback and lose their shit asking what signal chain I used. I didn't, its raw. Kick, mic, and a great preamp.
@@andygreen5565 Awesome. Lauten might be the only current company where you can mic an entire kit with only their mics and still get absolute top tier 10/10 commercial quality drums. I've got an insane mic locker with the best of the best mics ever made, and Lauten shits all over them. They're that good.
These sound phenomenal. Out of curiosity, do you know if there was any processing done (comp, EQ, etc.) or are these the mics w/o any outboard or plugins? Edit: just read the description. Wow. Super cool!
a thing i noticed is that, if the tom gets bigger, and all tom mics have the same position, like all pointing towords the middle of the drumhead, you will loose some tonality, because of the size difference. you kinda hear it, at 09:39, the moment he changed from the 2. rack to the 1. floor tom. I solved that "problem" by getting the mic a little bit closer to the drumhead, or angle it a touch steeper, towords the rim. so the sound gets more coherent. and BTW. your stuff sounds amazing
Hey cats: becoming a big fan of Lauren mics, I’ve gone for the Snare Mic and the LS-308, both of which are giving gorgeous results. Now looking at Tom mic, which I’m assuming is similar to the LS-308 but in a smaller form-factor?
Thanks so much for being part of the family!! Tom Mic is a totally different design from the 308 designed solely for use on toms. It’s going to sound more polished straight out of the box and pairs amazingly with 308 on bottom Tom!
Thanks so much for the kind words. Half of the battle is great playing, so do the best you can with what you have. There's no shame in that. We hope if the budget allows one day, you get to try our mics. In the interim, keep rocking!
Would love to see a shoot out with these and the Josephson e22s. I have been looking for an excuse to move the two I own off of tom duty, but cannot find a mic that can even come close to what they give me on toms. Could this be the one!?
We do it ourselves. There are no staged scenes, clapper boards, storyboards, or scripts. We just tell Darrell, Sully and Blair, go do your thing, and we'll capture it.
@@LautenAudio Thank you for your help, these tom mics sound amazing on top and bottom I was about to buy the new earthworks drum kit but I am buying these instead the sound quality just is absolutely amazing! I see why Grammy winners are using them! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Snare Mic is similar to the 208, but is not just a smaller version of it. The two are quite different. Tom Mic has no relationship with the 308 and is entirely reimagined in terms of sonics. Hope this helps!
So how do these compare to the 308s? I bought 6 just a couple of months ago for drum mics along with the snare mic, and they sound amazing, but I'd be a little bummed if these are better.
Thanks for being part of the family!! They are very different microphones with totally different technology and sound. Tom Mic is purpose built in every way for toms only. But that doesn’t negate how awesome the 308 are. If you decided to add Tom Mic to your arsenal, you could always move your 308s to bottom toms. Turns out it sounds ridiculous! Go watch The Black Album drum kit video we just uploaded today to hear it.
If you are talking about the toms being top and bottom-miked, this is to capture more low-end extension, just like an outside kick mic. I hope this helps!
@@LautenAudio Yes, I understand. But with the first microphone, the XLR connection is on the top, while with the others it's on the bottom. Is there a specific reason for this?
@@svenburgin7603 oh, you mean in relation to the stand. Someone probably threw it on and didn't realize it and left it that way. No impact on the sound.
Bottom micing the toms is a little bit overkill in my opinion. When you hit a drum, the heads will quickly start ‘agreeing’ on a frequency to vibrate in, otherwise you’d hear two distinct pitches when hitting a drum. So I don’t think there’s much merit to the idea that it’d have more low end. At most it will have a less defined attack, because the hit is more spread out by the time the impulse has traveled to the bottom head. But it makes sense that a mic company that just has brought out a tom mic is putting out this idea of bottom micing them lol😜
Lauten is not the first to introduce mic'ing the bottom heads, engineers have been doing this long before this mic came along. 🙃 you know what they say about opinions 😂 lol
We do it for the feeling of using these beautiful tools to create music. If we are lucky enought to have hundreds of millions of listens.. well that is the extra reward.
