This video is meant as a starting point for people who are having trouble with their lava lamps, but aren't sure where to begin. First we look at how a lava lamp should work, and then we look at a couple reasons why it might not and possible ways to fix them.
When looking for new bulbs, be aware that there's two types of reflector coatings, and you want the aluminum one. More info here: www.flameport.com/electric/la...

I have a lot of lava lamps. the bulb that generates the heat is paired in a way that it gets it just hot enough to make it float up, but not so hot that its unable to cool and sink back down. I had one lamp that just didn't want to float. I moved it just a little and magically it worked fine. Turns out where I had it positioned there was draft from my window keeping it just cooler than needed to work.

@TylerRajeski
@TylerRajeski Год назад
Yes. a stronger bulb or Hotter bulb will usually fix it if it has a poor flow. so if yours doesnt flow or get hot enough then id suggest getting a hotter bulb. i have a big lava lamp and after its bulb died i got another but it wasnt hot enough. then i went to a bulb and battery store and they had a small bulb that is actually for track lights in a kitchen but it fit and was hot enough. but after about 12 hours it gets a little warm so i just turn it off. ive had that bulb for over 2 years and it still works great but i maybe turn it on a total of 20 hours a month. IF even that much. but after watching this video im going to turn mine on lol

Great video! I have a suspicion that my lamp does not get warm enough. It's a Mathmos and usually I get one big blob rising only halfway, then it breaks apart and before a new bubble has formed, it sinks back down and merges with the rest of the wax. It also sometimes just shoots up and looks like a giant candle, that takes long to break apart. I have a spare bottle as I wanted two colors to chose from. Both act like this. The bulb is original Mathmos bulb.
@mpnoort5292
@mpnoort5292 4 месяца назад
Exactly the same problem here. Bought the lamp with two bottles. And just as you described. Room temperature at 20, no heater or window near the lamp. Still the same. Original lamps seem to fail to generate sufficient heat. I had an off-brand lava lamp for years that never had this problem at all. Pretty disappointing to spend triple the money on a lamp that is lacking heat and therefore any interesting movement of the wax. You would think that 60 years after it's invention Mathmos would have had enough time to improve and develop a proper working lavalamp.

@Makstuff
@Makstuff 2 года назад
Normal lamps are basically just a socket and an on-off switch, no complicated circuitry in there that could be sensitive to a small power increase like this. If your lamp is really underheated (try the aluminium foil trick if you are unsure) there's a good chance the 35W bulb will fix it instantly.

Hello, do you think it is doable to just order the bottle with the special mixture and DIY the rest of the lava lamp? I am looking into saving some money this way or make 2 lamps for the price of one. How hot does the base get? Can I 3D print a base and house the bulb inside?
@Makstuff
@Makstuff 2 года назад
No way a 3D printed base can work, even the aluminum one gets so hot it's almost impossible to touch when fully heated up. And without the thermal conductivity of metal, the heat would accumulate even more, pretty sure it would be enough to straight up melt 3D printer plastic.
@robotixlab
@robotixlab 2 года назад
@@Makstuff so it is needed to device some kind of metallic contraption that holds the bottle and transfers the heat to the bottle. I actually thought heat is transferred via air molecules, never thought of the base touching the bottle and transfers the heat. But even in the ones with the candles heat is transferred via the air, no?
@Makstuff
@Makstuff 2 года назад
I'd guess the primary way of heat transfer is radiation. (If you hold your hand under a downward-facing reflector bulb, you will still feel the heat even though the hot air can only go up.) Surely theres some amount of convection involved in bulbs too, which in case of candles is probably the dominant mechanism. Dunno how much any of this matters though, base is gonna get freakin hot either way.
@Makstuff
@Makstuff 2 года назад
In case that sounded misleading, what I meant by conduction in the first comment wasnt related to the heat transfer into the bottle, but the increased cooling effect reducing temperature inside the base. (As compared to plastic which is a much better isolator, thus traps the hot air inside)
@GladEnthusiast

In sweden ceramic holders and tops with glazed patterns made by potterry was alternativ to the normal metal ones. Dont know if they worked as good, but they didnt turn as hot when the lamp was on (thick layer of material) and definititly did not melt. What you call air bubbles are very likely liquid bubbles. Doesn't really change the problem, I know, just wanted to mention it. Anyway, you are doing the right thing in just leaving it running, maybe do that a couple more times before thinking of anything else. If they still don't go away by themselves, you can consider opening the bottle and melting the way seperate from the liquid, maybe poking around with a toothpick a bit to pop some bubbles. Experimental advice ofc and might not help, but if it was me I'd probably give it a try.

Bases are basically just a bulb socket, if you're sure the bulb works I'd have a look at the socket and where it connects to the cable, or maybe the switch. Premium manufacturers like Mathmos sell replacement bases for a hefty price, but if you have a no name lamp I'm afraid you're out of luck with replacement.

If it runs normally before that happens, it's very likely overheating. Plug-in dimmer should fix it. If you don't have one already, switch the lamp off for like 15-30 minutes when it globs up, and then switch it back on. If it flows normally again for a while it's 100% overheated.

So I filled a pot ( smaller saucepan ) with water placed glove into it and slowly brought temp up to where I could almost not touch it with bare hands ( DO NOT BOIL-just to where a light steam is coming off water ALMOST TOO HOT TO TOUCH ONLY( it started working in the globe ( looked like water and air was releasing from wax inside the globe ) was kinda weird for a bit but then started bubbling like it should, then I let it cool down ( next day ) I turned the lamp on and 1 hour later it works! Worked on both my 14.5” and the larger one with the correct bulb wattage, the water was a bit murky for a day or 2 but they cleared up nicely! Like the wax absorbed the liquid and air and stopped working? Now all 3 work great 2 weeks now, no problems! Jd ( possible older lamp revive method! )

Hello. Just wanted to thank you for saving me some money. My lamp had started just settling at the top. I originally replaced the bulb because it was old, but that didn't work. I put it on the stove in a pan of hot water like you suggested for about 20-30 minutes. You can see it start forming very small release bubbles. Like moisture had gotten into the wax. Put it back on the base and within 2-3 hours it was back to working like it was before. Thanks so much.

As said in the video, try wrapping it in aluminim foil, and if it helps, its probably worth getting a stronger bulb and a dimmer.

@Makstuff
@Makstuff 2 года назад
I assume you already waited for 3+ hours? If you did that, next thing you could try is the aluminum foil trick (also works with blankets etc.). Maybe the bonus heat is enough to melt the wax and let the coil drop back into place. By the way, coils aren't nearly as essential as one might think, also see my separate video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I4-7ufkVKwU.html

When this happened to my mathmos lava lamp I used a magnet to move and set the coil to its proper place
@zetok45
@zetok45 Год назад
Tilt the lamp until the coil is facing the bottom. Heat to molten, rotate in a twisty motion back and forth to settle coil. Cool and repeat process m after about 3 reheat and cools, the lamp should start to settle in and start working. Sometimes a blob will stay at the top. I find once a lamp is shaken or knocked over, you rarely get back 💯. Sometimes you can drain the water, refill with distilled water and leave 3 or so inches out. Disolve Epsom salt in a glass of water and a dollop of dish soap. Put two inches of this water in the lamp and leave an inch of room at the top.

@Makstuff 2 года назад
@@leanna3458 Guess I'm kinda running out of ideas then. Maybe it's just worn out, Mathmos says their bottles last around 2000 hours, since the Spencer ones are much cheaper they probably don't last quite as long. If your overall usage time is somewhere around that figure, it's possible you can't do anything except getting a new one (highest quality brand in US is www.lavalamp.com/ ) or trying experimental stuff like ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--XIrasov2B4.html . (In case you kept it in direct sunlight all the time, I could also see the UV rays accelerating the aging process. And this would explain the wax becoming translucent too, as you mentioned at the beginning.)

I have a question. I notice the new lava lamps use anemic 25 watt bulbs, but those same bulbs can be bought in 40 watts. The lava lamp says to use 25 watt bulbs. Is it safe to use a 40 watt bulb? Is the warning label about using 25 watt bulbs just more green crap?
@Makstuff
@Makstuff 6 месяцев назад
I personally would just give it a try and keep an eye on it during the first run in case something starts to smoke or whatever. One hard number that I can tell you from one of my recent experiments is that in the same base, when run with 25W and 40W, the liquid reaches around 59°C and 71°C, respectively, which is a difference of about 12°C. Which I'd say isn't THAT much in terms of safety, but of course use your own judgement.
@sirdouglasberg
@sirdouglasberg 6 месяцев назад
@@Makstuff I'll probably just stick with the 25 watt bulb. I just wish I knew whether that warning was legitimate or not. I don't want to take the risk. It's next to my daughter's bed. I do notice that these newer models don't look as good as the older ones with the bigger bulbs. I had one when I was a kid and the wax was a lot more active Were those older better lava lamps banned by the greenies?
