A 44-year-old farmer from a remote village in Doda district, Bharat Bhushan, winner of prestigious'Innovative Farmer Award' by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute has become an inspiration for hundreds of fellow marginal farmers, who have pledged to make Prime Minister's dream of 'Atma nirbhar Bharat' a reality. Bharat Bhushan shifted from age old traditional farming to adopt the relatively new and innovative cultivation of aromatic plants, making his village and his district proud and simultaneously becoming an inspiration for the marginal farmers of the hilly district. Talking to DD News, Bharat Bushan said that he used to sow maize and vegetables on his two kanal land, earning ameagre Rs 15,000 annually. But after turning to aromatic plants, he took additional land on lease and started growing lavender, and got a turnover of Rs three lakhs a year. The farmer, who was once on the Below Poverty Line (BPL)list, attributed the change in his fortunes to an interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a live video conference four years ago.
