I had to replace the spindles on my Cub Cadet zero turn and this is the process I use to find the problems. I replaced them and the blades.

The grease fittings don’t do crap. That grease just sits in there where the shaft is and doesn’t actually grease the upper or lower bearings due to the bearings being sealed. Best bet is to pop out the bearing seals upper and lower and run some grease in them once a season and you won’t have to replace any bearings for a long time...been working on mowers for years and grease fittings in spindles don’t do a thing.. Steve’s small engine saloon also has a video on sealed spindles folks, check it out...

Depending on the manufacture of spindle and shaft assy some do put in the sealed bearing and yes the grease fittings are a waste, but also I have came across some that have only a seal cap on the ends of the spindle assemblies with grease fittings. When rebuilding them I put in the unsealed bearing and they work great as long as they are serviced. So, it depends on the make and model and who overhauled them. Also, been doing this for many years too, even on industrial spindle assemblies on a bigger scale. But, I do this as side job to help out farmers and many old timers don't trust sealed bearing and still love there grease guns :). Been following Steve and for many years and saw the video and of course he has validity on the the issues of sealed bearing with grease fittings, also his beer collection. Thank you. Oh, I like CVG Frontier video.

I just learned that and doing both my cub cadets . The bearing seals on the inside I took off as per youtube video . Mine had zerk fittings but no weep hole , so added that . Hint clean your deck well and get graphite slip plate and brush it on the undeside of your deck it keeps grass from sticking to the underside of your deck . My son uses it on his tow trucks and told me about it A quart can will do 3 lawnmowers decks . I also use only gator blades as it cuts the grass cleaner and I drilled a hole in my discharge and put a wire in it and put wire up to the side handles on my mower so I can lower or raise the disharge shoot . I have over 3 acres so not really near any one so no harm no damage to anything slip plate on ebay 44 dollars free shipping . I had a spindle i bought new and I could see a wobble to the pulley and it would throw the deck belt off the pulley , found out why they never put the spacer between the 2 bearings and it was brand new from cub cadet . I made sure to let cub cadet know about this , Thanks to youtube for people putting up videos like this . I live in the country and no lawnmower repair shops around here

I got a whole new assembly and it’s tight as ever!! The other side I can spin walk away from and it’s still spinning. Idk which side is toast can’t just have a working assembly that doesn’t keep snapping belts

Was it the wear on the blade side around the bearing?
@jetzombie
@jetzombie 11 месяцев назад
No, it was on the top bearing. The bottom was good on the chute side and a little worn( not really noticeable) on the other side.

I wish they made decent assembly's for mowers cause if you replace the bearings very many times they don't fit snuggly in the housing.I don't know what was wrong with iron,or steel assembly's other than they did not make money selling replacement bearings and assembly's.

I can't keep a spindle and pulley on the grass discharge side.42 inch craftsman old mower.I mow in a sandy yard with leaves .Can't make it one season.The pulley always strips off the 12 point or what ever it is.fitting holding the pulley to the spindle.Why does this keep happening Could it be the deck is too thin and is flexing.Mower is 15 years old.I've replaced that bastard every year the last 3 years.Keeps happening. Where I live is too rough for a new mower.
@jetzombie
@jetzombie Год назад
It could also be the belt is to tight and causing the pulley to have unnecessary tension pulling the pulley inward and causing ware to the pulley assembly ( I've seen what your saying before and this was the issue). But, mowing in the sandy area like I do, your mowers deck has probably been sand blast alot and it might be causing the deck stucture to be weak, espeacially if its a stamped deck and it will flex alot when under a load. It can cause the change of pulleys tension and causing the ware of the pulley to accelerate more than usual. The best was is use a caliper to see what the deck thickness is , the ave thickness is between .135"(7gauge)- .179"(10 gauge) if less than that, then the deck is going out and becoming like paper and unsafe. I only get mowers with fab decks, beacuse they can take a beating. When I had my last stamped deck, I use to take it off every year and repaint underside to help prolong the life. Inclosing , I believe your deck is wornout, but not knowing I can only speculate. I hope that this has helped.

Seeing videos. They claim the bearing are sealed. Pumping grease into the hub will not grease the bearings.

are not those bearings, top and bottom, sealed bearings!?!?!? If they are, what is lubed by that grease fitting!?!?!?
@jetzombie
@jetzombie 4 года назад
It all depends on the manufacture of the spindle assy and what they have on the shelf at the time. If they put in the bearings, sometimes they pop off the seal on the inside so that the grease can go into the bearing. I have seen all sealed with zerks, no seals on either side with zerks, and upper bearing sealed(pully ) and lower bearing unsealed. When I rebuild them for people and if I get new bearings I ask them if they want them unsealed on the inside, and most usually do. This fall, I make a video of a teardown of these styles and maybe a better explanation of how it works.

Better bearings than stock are available at the bearing store. I prefer roller bearing spindles that Toro commercial and Scag has. But if you have ball bearing spindles it is worth while to upgrade.

There was a little girl in my town around 7 years old that was playing in the yard next to her grandpas grass lot he said he had been mowing there for 40 years and never hit anything or had anything happen and the grandpa either hit a piece of metal or something metal broke off while he was mowing and it hit his granddaughter in the Neck right in the juggler vein and they couldn’t stop the bleeding fast enough for ambulances to get there and they were there fast because they lived close to a hospital and she died as they were loading her in the ambulance it was so sad as a dad that has lost his son to a car wreck it’s a loss you will never get over since then I always make sure I don’t mow while anybody is walking close or around me

B, that is such a sad, but very true story. I am the same way when I mow too. I make sure all the animals and family stay away until I'm done. I had a 22" push mower break a new blade one time and it shot out from the rear collection bag between my legs, it missed everything by a inch.

Will it make it blade high on one side of the deck and low on the other?
@jetzombie
@jetzombie 2 года назад
Nope, that's the leveler of the deck assy. put the deck down to the lowest setting on a level floor and measure the distance of the bottom deck to the floor and see it there is difference between the sides. The spindles would only have the issue if the spindles are different lengths or the base has been damage.

On a Simplicity Pacer walk behind mower, there is a small and large pulley for 2 different sized blades. The larger pulley wobbles very loosely. However, there is a large hole with a ton of slack that the hub sits on. The smaller spindle does not have a hub that sits on an enlarged hole, and there is no hole visible because it sits over it. Is this part of the mower’s design, or is this bad bearings? The weird thing is that when the belt is off, it tends to lean towards a certain side.
@jetzombie
@jetzombie 2 года назад
Yes, that sounds like the bearing is worn and possibly the shaft, the best way to know is to pull it out and see the condition of it. Usually when the bearing is going out, it will get sloppy and if it has been going on for a while I bet the shaft is worn too.

Just to reiterate so people don't waste grease. If your spindle has sealed bearings inside you are wasting your time and money greasing your spindles. Not sure if brand in video has sealed bearings or not, but MOST spindles do. And some companies still put zerks to grease.

@jetzombie 2 года назад
Exactly.

They actually get grease in them you just have to fill the spindle chamber packed full of grease. I used to think it didn't do anything but there is a video on RU-vid some guy did.

@patrickv.5766 Is it really a good idea to pack it so full of grease that it goes past the seal. That's alot of pressure. Just a thought.

Thanks for the video - so my blade just spins and doesn't turn the pully at all, what do I change? Thanks again.
@jetzombie
@jetzombie 4 года назад
Okay, possibly it could be where the blade attaches to the bottom of the pulley shaft could be stripped out and or the pulley attach could be stripped out the pulley. Either way, the engagement of the blade movement is toast. You can check to see if the blade could be removed and check for damage on the bottom at ware the blade attaches to the shaft, try to reinstall to see if the blades move the shaft and pulley, or do the same thing to the pulley side to see if can be secured back to the shaft. If not, pull the blade and pulley the spindle assy out and see if there might be anything out of place. The shaft normally should not shear, but it could depending on the age, what it struck, or the bad material it was made from. Depending on the manufacture you can repair them or it might be cheaper to buy new ones. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions.

what deck is this? the ultima ZT1's are doing this. after some research, the ZT1 and ZT2 decks are identical. the 50" shares the same spindle, the 54 altho a different part number also shares the same spindles. so the only difference between a zt1/zt2 is the hydros, tires and arm rests.

The deck is a RZT L 46" deck and the spindle assembly part number 918-05078A.
