Lawn Scalping - A Simple Job Taken Too Far

Lawn scalping is one of the best things you can do to get green grass faster. Because it allows more heat and sunlight to reach the soil, your grass turns green sooner. It's a great way to reduce thatch in your lawn and makes fertilizer, pre-emergent and biostimulants work better.
Lawn scalping is usually done on warm season grass like Bermuda and Zoysia. That said, cool season lawns can also benefit from cleaning up dead grass by lowering your height of cut. In this video we show the process in detail and share tips to help you get a great result with the least amount of effort.
Scalping is best done early in the growing season. For most people, that means late February through the entire month of March. We like to get it done earlier since temperatures are lower making the work more pleasant. In this video we also share a few tips that will help your lawn all season long. One of those tips is to perform a soil test and begin applying a soil biostimulant like Essential-G.

Can I scalp before I start seeing the grass trying to begin turning green? - if I get more cold weather/freezing temps, will that cause any damage if I have scalped? (Central NC/Raleigh)
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 2 года назад
I've never experienced damage from cold snaps after scalping Mike. Granted temps likely get a bit colder where you are than northeast GA. Bermuda is very resilient. It would take extended periods of sub-freezing temps to cause damage. Bermuda would recover pretty quickly from it once temps warmed up. Seriously difficult to permanently damage it. If you want to be on the safe side, wait until early March. Appreciate you watching sir.

@RonHenry
@RonHenry Год назад
Hi T Johnson. If you're going to scalp your Zoysia you could do it this month if you like. Going from 2.5" to 1" is quite a change so you may wish to break it up into multiple sessions. Not sure what part of the country you're in but if GA Feb - early March is good. I would wait until April/May to aerate: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bbwLD15nYu0.html Appreciate you watching the content.

Luv the vid Ron. Is it best to remove thatch at this time or wait to dethatch later in the growing season?
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 2 года назад
It can be done at either time Peter B. The positive to getting rid of it now is sooner green up and more pleasant temps when doing this kind of work. The benefit of doing it when the grass is already growing is the lawn won’t look ugly for quite as long. I have Bermuda which is brown this time of year anyways. So from an appearance standpoint, there’s little difference.

Can I do this on my St Augustine lawn as well? I'm in North Florida
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 2 года назад
Although there are people that do it, I wouldn't recommend scalping St. Augustine. At least not to level that we do Bermuda. If your height of cut is currently 4 inches and you want to lower to 3 to do a bit of cleanup, that's ok, but I wouldn't take it down to dirt like you see being done on Bermuda or Zoysia lawns.
@chuckash7440
@chuckash7440 2 года назад
Do you have any different ideas on this topic for zoysia in SE Alabama. Great video btw!
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 2 года назад
Hi Chuck. This would apply to Zoysia as well. Really even more than Bermuda because Zoysia gets so thick. I would wait until early March on Zoysia given that it grows so slowly. It would benefit from being thinned out. Thanks for watching sir. Let me know if I can help answer anything else.

I was just wondering if it was too early to scalp yesterday. is there a certain temp I should wait for before I scalp?
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 2 года назад
Not really Sam. Ideally when temps are on a warming trend. The benefit of doing it now is it's not crazy hot outside making it work more pleasant. The downside of doing it early is the lawn will like it's been scalped until the grass starts growing. Some people wait until initial green up to scalp. I prefer to do it earlier. Hi BrewCrewFishimg. Without seeing your soil test results, the 12-12-13 is generally a good way to start the season assuming your soil needs the phosphorus. I would scalp prior to applying the fertilizer. Outside of that, keep up with your mowing. Sounds like you’re on the right track for this season.

Great video Ron! Btw. Does your trash company take all those bags for you? 😂

Thanks Ryan! Nope. I went down to greet the trash guys and all they would take is 5 bags. I called in a favor from a friend with a lawn care service to come pick them up. Scalping is no joke. The mowing, cleanup and disposal all make it a job. Up there with top dressing a lawn. Thanks for watching!

@@thereelryan just under 1/2" I took it down lower than usual this time around. Really wanted to give the lawn a good reset.

In addition to earlier green up…..If you don’t scalp Bermuda, you will have to look at that old and dormant grass every time you mow and never truly have a full green lawn. Your lawn will always look half dead until you scalp.
