Hey everyone, So one of the things I dislike the most is raking. In this video I will be looking at a lawn sweeper / leaf collector, it's the Gardena Leaf Collector.
Raking is boring and time consuming hopefully we can take down the need for manually raking to about 5-10% with one of these things!

This seems like a great alternative for someone who has health issues and can't do a lot of strenuous raking. Raking is definitely hard work. Seems like a great tool, never heard of it before. Thanks for doing this video.

We were taught old school to leave them on the lawn for nutrients for the soil. But as you all know. This leads to abnormal amount of Thatch build up. Now you are killing your yard and feeding the weeds. I love my lawn sweeper. It picks up the neighbors sweet gum balls,twigs, and some peoples trash they toss out. But I do have a burn pit for all that. Thanks for your videos. Sam, your yard looks amazing, it's hard to believe what you started with till now. Thanks again.

Hey Kell, thanks alot for the kind words, really appreciate it. I have to say, I actually considered the lawn sweeper a luxury thing, but after 2 seasons with it I really like it, makes it so easy to keep the lawn clean. Don't get a lot of leaves but loads of pine needles. As you say, I saw several articles this year where they recommended to leave everything on the lawn for the sake of the nutrients, but thatch build up and it will make the soil more acidic, also if it piles up it will kill the grass under it, so I am having a hard time to see how they justify leaving everything on there. I will continue to sweep it away :) thanks again mate.

Hi Sam, Another great and enjoyable video mate, the build stories made me LOL! 😂 I have a petrol rotary mower which tends to pick up the majority of leaves and other debris, depending on how low I set it. On the scarifying though, I don't mind the raking afterwards as I enjoy the exercise to get the heart pumping and keep the bingo wings at bay! I have to say though my lawns aren't as big as your rear lawn but the raking is still time consuming. I've just invested in a battery powered leaf blower though to assist in gathering up the detritus and a set of leaf grabbers to pick it up to save all that bending over. Keep up the brilliant videos, I'm off to watch another 😁 Mick
@SamsLawn
@SamsLawn 10 месяцев назад
Hey Mick, thanks! I honestly was thinking about getting a rotary mower to just pick up leaves and stuff, but then I came across this thing, works really well. I have tried it after scarifying and it does not work at all for that, the debris is just too heavy, so a normal mower would be better for that, so I might get one anyways or a leaf blower actually, anything but the normal rake 😁 Really glad you like the videos, makes my day mate!

I have that thing too and it's doing a great job of getting rid of the leaves which I have 10x what you have there. Definetely better than raking! As you said it does not collect 100% but close enough. You could use a rake for the left overs, that would not take long since there would be just a few leaves here and there.. but I don't do it since new ones are falling all the time so there's no point.

Just come across your channel Sam, keep up the good work. As a much older guy I have had my own gardens for 47 years(2 homes) I have been fully retired now for 13 years and obviously when I am not taking/collecting my lovely grandsons on the school run I have more time than younger busy parents to better look after my lawns. I have kept them neatly mowed etc,however I have never scarified,reseeded,top dressed and the rest, is it because I have been lazy or just bamboozled by watching far too many lawncare videos that can become very technical.Cheers from the UK.
@SamsLawn
@SamsLawn Год назад
Hey Mate, glad you found my channel and dropped a comment. I think you have your priorities just right, family always comes first :) I try not to get too technical about things, I really do think too many youtube videos just complicates things. As you say, you are keeping it to the basics and it works for you, if you would want to crank it up a notch you could add maybe top dress one year, scarifying another. No need to go nuts on the lawn, like myself or some others, you can have a decent lawn without doing all that, so good for you mate!

Hi there. Love your lawn. It's almost perfect. The sweeper on the other hand, yeah, it doesn't cut it for leaf pick-up. It cleaned your lawn, but it was pretty much clean as a whistle before you started. It picked up the pine needles and that's good. The container is so small. I'd have to stop every hundred feet to empty it. Thumbs down on the sweeper and thumbs up to you and your lawn. Cheers!
@SamsLawn
@SamsLawn Год назад
Hey Peter, thanks so much, appreciate it. I do agree that the container is too small, I have a lot of pine needles and two weeks ago I ran the collector and I had to empty that thing 3-4 times, just with pine needles, don't really get why they made it so small, as you say I don't have that much leaves, but I can imagine if you do you would have to stop and empty it all the time. Thanks again for the kind words and thanks for dropping by mate.

Had a similar machine back in the 1960’s. But with the amount of leaves we get here in the Northeast US, it would fill up every 10 feet. This guy’s lawn looked clean to me before he started. I do love the fact that it is manual and requires no fuel.

I used to use a sweeper similar to this but the brushes went the same way as the wheels (over, down and flicked to the rear) where this one flicks the debris forward first. They are handy on small lawns/ paths and drives, but I get better results using a blower. Most of my lawns I work on I mow the leaves up mulching them but keeping blades high. This debris is collected and stored them used as leaf mulch. That said, your lawn looks 👍👍

Way back in the late 1950's - early '60's we used those to "sweep up" the leaves! In fact, as a kid, we use to take turns sitting in the basket section and getting the leaves "swept" into our face! LOL So that's hardly a "new" item, just an old idea "recycled"!

Hi Sam Greetings from Scotland. I have just found your channel. Have watched a few of your videos. I am impressed with your English. One question, with such a large lawn and seeing you have several lawn care tools how come you don't have a petrol or cordless lawn mower?. I have 3 mowers, an old Qualcast 35s classic petrol, an Allett Kensington 14k and a Mountfield HP414 petrol rotary mower as a backup and when the grass is too long for the cylinder mower. Looking forward to your next video.

So I'm pretty much saving up for a power driven reel mower at some point, really want an Allet Kensington,. Before I got all into lawn care I just used the robomower. Btw, I love Scotland, I go every year, even got married near Fort William, I consider Scotland my second home :)

Have used a lawn sweeper extensively. The results for this one seem substandard, actually. And that seems to do with that it uses a plastic comb, i.e. plastic teeth with gaps between them (like a rake), which is going to miss a lot, versus other sweepers, like mine (Agri-fab), which has brushes for more complete coverage. Also seems like it should be wider...but maybe that's just the European thing with their preference for tiny things.

Yeah, there you goI have a ZT mower & hitch up my Ohio Steel lawn sweeper. All I need to do is take my backpack leaf blower & get it all out in the open & 1-2-3❗I don't kill myself, got a lot of ground to cover. Those come in 2 basic sizes: 42" (22 cu. ft) & 50" (26 cu.). If you dump it @ the curb & the town scoops it up, you can't beat it.🏆🎰
@SamsLawn
@SamsLawn Год назад
Hey mate, not sure, can't really say if this one is better or worse than the ones with a brush, never tried one of those. Meanwhile this one actually works pretty well, I do agree about the width, not sure why they didn't make it wider or the bagger larger, just stupid if you ask me. But still it works for my small lawn. I think most lawns in europe are about this size, at least a majority of them, so maybe that's why they go for the smaller size, just a guess though.
@coppingtonfarnham7731
@coppingtonfarnham7731 Год назад
I bought an inexpensive lawn sweeper for $130, because it was the only brand sold locally. It came with that comb-like design. I have to make a lot of passes to get all the leaves picked-up, and you have to set it to nearly drag on the ground to get adequate (at all) pickup for the small leaves we have. Dragging equates to a lot of effort to push. This device is better than raking, but I'm trading one kind of strain for another. I remember my parents (in the 1960's) having a sweeper that worked well and had brushes/bristles rather than this lousy plastic comb design. Plus the bag falls off intermittently from dragging on the ground! I'm going to investigate if that brush design is still manufactured.

I have two oak trees that are always dropping small twigs. Some of them get covered by grass over time. Would the sweeper or power rack be a better options for twigs that have settled between the grass? Thanks and I like 👍🏾 your content.
@SamsLawn
@SamsLawn Год назад
Hey John, if they are covered by grass and really stuck, you would need a power rake to get to those I would say. But if they are just on top then the sweeper would work just fine. Only thing is that the power rake will stress the grass and it's much much more aggressive compared to the sweeper.

I don't know about this thing.... It definitely wouldn't work on a bigger yard with more leaves... Which means it's only realistic on a small yard, which also makes it easier to just rake it up or use a mulching/bagging capable mower... Which you definitely should consider investing in. The good news is your yard looks great, and it functions about 80%ish.

Hey Alex, for sure, if you have a bigger lawn then this thing would drive you crazy, mostly because of the small bagger, it's actually so stupid that it is made for picking up leaves but the bagger is super small. This is nothing new. My grandfather bought a leaf sweeper back in the 60's from Sears. When my mother died in 2011 the leaf sweeper was still in working order and I had used it in the fall to collect the leaves from the back yard of grandpa's old house.

Hey Matthew, a lot of people actually said the same thing, had no idea this was already an old "invention", but I guess most things are remakes or stuff starts to trend again. Good thing you are still using your old one, I also tend to use things as long as they run and work, don't see a need of changing things out just for the sake of changing :)

We get a lot of acorns too on our lawn, it will pick up the smaller ones that are on top of the grass. If they have been pushed down into the lawn then it won't. So I wouldn't say it's the best at picking them up unfortunately.

Hey mate, good question, this particular one wouldn't be able to I think, it's just too weak, it struggled even taking upp debris after scarifying. But a sweeper with a brush might, that would be interesting to see actually.

@SamsLawn

hahaha great comment! I actually 100% agree with you, love being outdoors and especially in the lawn, it's just that raking and me don't go well together. I have actually even bought gloves with extra protection around those areas but still it chafes for some reason. Hi! What is the Swedish name for the lawn mower with mulching? Is it a separate attachment or a specific mower? Tnx for the demo :)
@SamsLawn
@SamsLawn 2 года назад

Hey John, probably could, but I imagine that it would be harder to get the leaves where you want them, or blowing up mulch from the beds, or even being able to blow away all the wet pine needles. But I've never tried it, think this is a great way and no power involved, also a good thing in my book.
