First of all, thank you for showing honest videos without trying to cover your mistakes. I’ve been welding for over 25 years and I’m still learning. I notice you’re using fluxed core wire, usually we use that type of wire in smaller machines, but most of these machines can also take CO2+Argon mixes for steel, which you’ll get better results. For but welds, don’t forget to chamfer the pieces you’re going to connect. If you don’t want do get a sun tan (welding releases a lot of IR+UV wave lengths, which are not so good for people with a lot of skin spots/signs), you should always wear gloves, work overalls and welding boots (when I don’t have these, I use duct tape around my shoes and work overalls, so that weld nuggets don’t get inside the boots/shoes). Only on TIG welding you usually use both of your hands, on MIG you don’t have to use both of your hands, and it helps (if you have some nice protection gloves), to secure the piece with the free hand. By the way, thank you for helping me out with my wood projects with your great videos :)

Evolution power tools. From my experience their pro line of tools are ok for consumer use but their consumer grade tools aren't worth the money. I got a mitre saw of theirs and it is extremely inaccurate. I ended up having to take the rails off, create my own locking mechanism and re-calibrate the protractor thing.

...assuming the bead was laid by an experienced welder. It really won't matter for lawn trimmings and branches, though.

The metal at the edge of the weld is harder so if there is a lot of tension and different forces on it it wants to tear, but to put that kind of load on a trailer which is used on a Lawntractor... i don't think it will break. If he wants to reinforce it he can use a bit of the angle iron welded to the trailer and hole welded for the hitch that should be enough. FYI i have build trailers for 9 years which used 3mm rectangle iron for that (of course it was boltet through so you can change the hitch if it's worn out) and those could load 750 kg. Matthias if you have any questions regarding the trailer build you can write an e-mail in german. =)
@boots7859
@boots7859 3 года назад
@@matthiaswandel If the weld is truely a weld. Better would have been to take a piece of angle iron or flat steel and welded that to the cart, and then the other end to the tongue. Would have required turning the cart upside down. In reality, that cart is probably never going to fail with the light loads it'll encounter, however you might take off some day and be surprised to find no trailer at the end of the journey.

I'm looking to build one too, and who is the first to pop up?? ❤. I'm a DIY self welder, too. Mig. with flux core, no gas.😪. Got a 110v so can plug in anywhere one of my best investments. I have 3 grinders, cut off wheel, 40-60 flap disk, and a wire wheel. I don't use the reg. Grinding wheels. I don't get red because I'm a brown man. But you smell of burned pork 🐷 and it's not so good for the knuckles. gloves are good, at least for the supporting hand. Did much resurch on bed frame metal a time ago can’t find my write up on it. High carbon mostly train rail if good. But unpredictable, garbage for Welders. Don't trust it for stuff to support your body in high places, etc. I use it, and stock up when available at good will, etc. It will surprisingly break near the welds at times. I don't know if it's because of weakening with heat or crystalline frame vs. the heat and cooling process, and it takes time to level clean up them dodgy welds.. hard stuff. It was really tough for me to drill. But yes I think I'll use it for my build. Good man, keep Living LA Vida Loca 😂❤.

Matthias trailer you get a very good, but across the welding load axis is better to exclude from the experience, so the spacecraft is cherevato cliff in the most unfitting moment. Drawbar hitch welded to this method is not very reliable, of course I understand that the truck is needed, which would bring a bucket of apples from the garden. Yet the future consider this advice. I am not in any way trying to offend your work, I would say more than I admire your wood products, I always watch your video with pleasure. I wish you success in your work. Radiation burns are no fun. Even if it is hot, I would recommend wearing some dark clothing instead of exposing your bare skin to the radiation. Professionals wear leather protective gear, but it probably does not merit buying that for the occasional use. It was a very good idea to avoid the fumes from the Zinc plated metal and to weld in an adequately ventilated area. Many years ago I welded up a large trailer with the frame supported on stands to get it off the cement floor. The problem came when I bent over to do the welds. My pant legs rode up a bit on my legs and exposed about an inch of my legs to the radiation as I welded. I got a bad radiation burn from that. Lesson learned.

When welding constantly look at the molten metal puddle, this will show you when you are getting off track you can correct yourself by perhaps adjusting the angle of the mig gun, reducing wire feed, slower welding Manuel speed or perhaps faster speed Also constantly practice, get a solid length of mild steel 10x50x200 and run weld beads along the steel do this about 20-30 times, this helps you identify how you can improve your welding Zac

i think the biggest problem with the welding is the fact that all of the steel was zinc plated, that's allways difficult to weld.. And YES, those fumes are toxic.. you'll be getting nauseous within 10 minutes if you weld that stuff without ventilation
@matthiaswandel
@matthiaswandel 8 лет назад
what makes you think bed frames are zinc plated?
@JanBinnendijk
@JanBinnendijk 8 лет назад
the white "Residue" you see beside the welds is a "tell-tale"sign of zinc plating.. the cream-coloured residue could be from the flux-core wire you use, since i've seen the same sort of colour when welding with electrodes, which are basically the same as flux-core wire, but inside out.. Fluxcore is great for welding outdoors, because the core melts into a gas, and also a slag on top of the welds, protecting it from oxygen just after welding.. when the welds are cooled, it is best practice to remove the slag.. The Hitch is zinc plated for sure, i can tell from the colour of it.. you did good grinding the part before welding

Angle iron is CHEAP. Perhaps you are a long way from a supplier? I understand the desire to reuse materials, but learning to weld on previously painted or powder coated mystery metal is a headache waiting to happen. And it's more work anyway. For $20-30 you could have picked up enough steel for a couple of those little carts. I highly recommend investing in clean steel for fabrication.
@intjonmiller
@intjonmiller 8 лет назад
Because it eliminates the question of materials or skills causing the difficulty with the welds. And because, like I said, it's much less work and therefore faster (assuming you have a supplier reasonably close).

Your video started out a little slow; however, you did come up with a few good ideas later in the video. One suggestion, rather than making the entire cart bed, just go to your local home center and buy a large plastic wheel barrow tub and use that. I did and it saved a lot of time and best of all it will last a lot longer than plywood and metal.

Your resourcefulness is astonishing...my Dad grew up during the depression and was always making things from junk he found at the dump...I remember as a kid he would sometimes come back from the dump with more than he was taking there.

It looks like you're using flux core wire? From my experience with flux core instead of gas shielding. Flux core is much more messy and messy looking of a weld when done.

What kind of blade is that saw using? It looks like it has teeth but the sticker on the side of the saw says it's some kind of abrasive disc.

The sticker says one blade lasts as long as 20 abrasive disks. It's a carbide tipped metal saw.

Looks like you're doing most of it right, Matthias! Good weld prep, accurate cuts, lots of tacks before welding, and avoiding the galvanize fumes are all traits of being a pro welder. Nice design too by the way.

A little suggestion for the welding : grind a small bevel in the angles you're welding, this will create more space for the welds to hold on and you can fatten them up a bit , and after a bit of cleaning they will look better

What some of the other commenters have been trying to say is that what caused your "sunburn" was the ultraviolet light from the welding arc, which is *far* more intense than sunlight. It can be *very* dangerous to eyes and skin. (Never look directly at the arc, even from a distance!)
@matthiaswandel
@matthiaswandel 8 лет назад
yes, sufficiently obvious I figured It goes without saying. I guess I should have mentioned that I knew that nonthe less just to avoid those comments.
@purplealice
@purplealice 8 лет назад
Sorry! There *are* people who don't know how dangerous the UV can be - I guess it depends on who taught them to weld.

in which case, they'd jsut need to read one of a dozen or so comments that state that.

+Ace Lightning "Dude, why are you wearing long sleeves and jeans? It's 90 degrees!" "I don't wanna get irradiated!" To be fair, though, heavy clothing means you'll be uncomfortable for the duration you're outside instead of dealing with a sunburn for a week.

You're adorable, "sunburn", "A" , I think that's a weld-burn... a sunburn happens when you're are exposed to sun, like in Florida. OBTW, please come down to NW Florida and and teach :-) thank you for all your videos and tutorials none-the-less!! PH P.S> shorts on a Candie... ouch!

I made a wooden jig for welding, of course.... Pure Matthias, and besides the LOL, its a perfectly fine solution using scrap 2x's... So who's laughing now??? Although those 'welds' were pretty sorry. Not sure you got much penetration on them.

Matthias, one tip for welding... long extension cords can't supply the unit with all the power it needs to make a penetrating weld. Whenever I weld, I stick with a 15ft or shorter 10GA cord. Noticed a huge improvement!
@matthiaswandel
@matthiaswandel 8 лет назад
The cord I used is #14. Same size as the cable in the wall. So a straight line extension cord to the breaker box gives me more juice than plugging into a socket where the wire snakes around god knows where.

Nice video and I enjoyed it but the lack of safety at the beginning! No safety glasses with the chop saw or grinder, no welding gloves, wearing shorts(!), no leather boots.......ugh. SMH. I know things get hot but suck it up. When I weld, I do so in cotton overalls with very heavy leather gloves and boots. I don't even miter saw boards without eye protection......I know the pain of sawdust in my eyes, no way I want to experience that with a metal shaving. Your homemade gigs are very impressive. I love your use of old bed rails. And, after bashing you a bit in this comment, I "liked and subscribed. :-)

I feel like theres a lot of people who get revenue or perks for promoting some company's tools, and honestly, I think you're going about it a good way, you're using the tool, you're getting good footage of it's capabilities, and you're DEMONSTRATING not...ADVERTISING the tool. so it's not annoying to watch, or make you feel like you're reduced to some bilboard. besides you get a free tool out of it. so that's good. I give good feedback on your approach to this. I hope companies take note, and other youtubers, that this is a good "advertisement" just give somebody who makes things a new shiny tool, and only ask them to make sure they get footage of it being used. and at most say they gave it to you. nothing elaborate.

1st you didn't get sun burn, you got radiation burns. 2nd flux core welding is easiest described a welding with a caulk gun as it is as simple as that. Straight lines with the gun at a double 45° pushing not pulling. No welding patterns needed like with gas MIG. Where you move the gun in circles, half moons or V's. Also you are right about the short sleeves but you should also NEVER weld in sneakers. Besides these few things, your doing good! Keep it up

I just use the trailer I pull the mower to the jobsite on as the trailer I pull behind the mower. John Deere z920m with 6x12 single axle wood floor. I have no idea what the mower is rated to pull but it has never caused an issue. I have had overloading issues when I pull my cyclone rake bagger. It gets really heavy and the mower blades are running when I bag. Bent and broke pushrods. Engine was getting hot I think. But pulling loads of limbs or bush trimmings on the 6x12 has never been a problem. I do lawn work professionally. It helps that I can hook the trailer to the truck and go straight to the dump. On my old mower and trailer, I once pulled an actual ton of gravel. This was very difficult on an exmark lazer Z as 48" deck with a 5x8 utility trailer. When the hauling capacity of the mower was exceeded, it just lifted the front wheels off the ground which seemed to happen long before the engine was overloaded.

I'm a professional welder. What you are calling a sunburn is actually a radiation burn from the welding spark/flash. This is why we wear safety equipment like a welding helmet, buttoned up longsleeve shirt, welding gloves, etc... If you were to make longer welds you will end up with some really bad radiation burns.

yepp your awesome!! as always!! umm I know you have it in you to make my idea I feel would work great on that,. You should maybe build telescoping ramp that retracts in below the bed And between the wheels? Or even could double as a roof? also you could make a horse head and body with Saddle or motorcycle and attach it inside with padding as great entertainment for the young Ones in your family ? many respects my friend. I do believe you will make a fine welder/fabricator. your results may improve if you always brace your left elbow against something solid when welding. if you can brace your left hip against something solid at the same time as you brace your left elbow, better yet. or, if you can't brace your hip... then maybe your knee, or something else trying for as many ergonomic anchors as possible... then use your left wrist for a pivot. I'm sure you'll get the drift.
