Man, your lawn looks great. Nice and full. Not bunching fescue. that’s my nemesis

Thank you, I really appreciate it! Yeah, I can't stand the fescue clumps I got throughout my yard. You can't really see them in pictures, but they drive me nuts when I mow.haha

@@OutoftheWeeds My mission this year is to dig these out. I need to find good grass seed to plant first. I checked the last couple bags i used and i see a majority of it is the fescue type. DIdnt realize it was mixed like it is. Any suggestions on getting rid of clover?
@OutoftheWeeds
@OutoftheWeeds Год назад
@David Bartsch Yeah, digging them out is probably the easiest method. I just have so much it would take forever. I have been using Jonathan Green grass seed the last couple years and have really liked it. Most of their stuff is turf type tall fescue so it is thin, very similar to other cool season grasses. For clover, I would get speedzone. You pay a little more for it, but I typically know once I spray it, the weeds are done for.

@@OutoftheWeeds I appreciate it. I’ve recently subscribed to the Scott’s plan to have them send me the stuff when I need it. Not a big fan of having no pre emergent stuff. Going to try focus on getting a fuller grass to eliminate future weed potential. I’m going to check through your other videos and see what good tips you have on getting grass to grow! Thanks

Lots of good info here. It’s best to prevent weeds by promoting thick growth of the turf grass and using preemergent. But you’ll likely have at least a few weeds anyway. I like to switch up my weed killers and preemergents to prevent resistance. I have a Bermuda lawn, so I use prodiamine a lot…but I’m going to hire a company to put out some spectacle flo in the fall to switch up for a while.

I was going to try pre emergent this year but I still missed the window even though we have 29 degree nights still.....ugh! I'm not sure if its creeping charlie or what but theres this little round leaf weed that I can't get rid of. I've sprayed a couple different weed killers on them but they just turn yellow, it doesn't really get rid of them. This year its that little round weed, and weeds with purple flowers already growing. My neighbor has TONS of dandelions that inevitably get onto my lawn.
@OutoftheWeeds
@OutoftheWeeds 2 года назад
Thanks for watching! I'm not sure where you live but if you are getting nights that cold you are probably still in a good window to do your pre-emergent. The weed with the purple flowers is probably wild violet. Also if you spray weeds and they turn yellow, the weed control is probably working. Often times the weed won't go away but by killing it you are allowing your good grass to out compete it and take over the area where the weeds are. The other thing your doing by killing them is not allowing the weeds to go to seed and spread in your lawn. I like to look at weed control as a long term solution because the little steps I do now will payoff big time in the future. Hope this helps and keep at it. Soon your hard work will pay off!

Great video thank you for sharing it! I live in NW Iowa I just cut my lawn yesterday(May 5) & I’m going to lay Crab Grass Preventer down tmr (May 7) I’ve never used a pre-emergent before..Forecast says rain May 8 & 9. Would May 7 be a advantageous time to spread the Crab Grass Preventer since it will rain the next day or 2? Appreciate any feedback thank you!!
@OutoftheWeeds
@OutoftheWeeds 2 года назад
Hey thanks for watching. Yeah it would be a great time to get it down if rain is in the forecast afterwards! The crabgrass preventers need watered in to activate. They usually recommend at least 1/2in of rain within 14 days after the application but the closer the rain is to when you put it down the better!

@@OutoftheWeeds Great thanks a lot much appreciated!!😎 When should I spread the the weed & feed? A few weeks from now? I’d like to grow some patches of new grass too..Do I weed & feed first? Thanks again man!
@OutoftheWeeds
@OutoftheWeeds 2 года назад
You're welcome! You can do the weed and feed anytime since it is targeting completely different weeds. Just make sure you are either watering it in or there will be rain within a few days afterward to activate it. As far as seeding goes if you did crab grass preventor down over your whole yard you will have to wait to seed. The way the pre emergent works is it creates a vapor barrier that blocks seedlings from breaking through so it will kill any new seed you plant. Normally if I have any seeding to do I will avoid those spots with the pre emergent. You will however be able to seed in the fall once it wears off.

@@OutoftheWeeds I thank you with every being of my soul. Goes to show you how much you read on a bottle, bag or container you have to ask someone who knows. You're very welcome! I've never worked with warm season grass and I think it would be cool to experience the differences. If you search for a university turfgrass extension site near where you live they usually offer a ton of articles about the grasses in the area. That's where I learned a lot of my information on cool season grass. So often people at hardware stores don't specialize in certain areas so I've found it much more beneficial to find info myself. Have a great day!

I am a complete newbie to Lawncare. Never really cared about my lawn before and still don't. But I would like to make it look a little better for cheap and no hassle. I have lots of weeds, dandelions, purple things, poppyseeds etc. It's a mess. Is there a one time thing I can spray on it to get rid of most of it? I really don't want to keep buying stuff and wasting time on it. I have a really small lawn filled with critters, insects, skunks, rabbits, etc that chew it up. My neighbors have nice lawns and don't seem to do any annual maintenance in terms of weeds. So can you treat it once and never again to get most of them out?
@OutoftheWeeds
@OutoftheWeeds 2 года назад
Thank you for watching. The only thing that you could put down to get rid of it all would be normal roundup that kills grass and weeds. I'm sure what percentage of your yard is good grass vs weeds but you can normally bring back a lawn even if it's 40% good grass. If it's less than that I honestly think killing it all would be less work. Then you would either sod (more cost, less maintenance) or seed (less cost more maintenance) starting with a clean slate. Unfortunately there isn't going to be just a one and done product to get rid of everything in your lawn. The products I list in this video will take out a lot of the weeds you have but not take out everything the first application. The most work your lawn will ever take is always the first year because you spend most of your time fighting off the stuff that shouldn't be there. Once you get good grass established it tends to keep most weeds from ever showing up and becomes way easier to manage. Hope this info helps. Let me know if you have any other questions!

@@OutoftheWeeds Wow, kill my entire lawn and start over. It makes sense but to a newbie like me, that seems like a lot of work. Okay how about just something I can use one time to kill most of the bad stuff but not the good grass
@OutoftheWeeds
@OutoftheWeeds 2 года назад
I'd recommend getting spectracide for lawns. It's the jug I show in the video that has the orange gun. That will work on most of your weeds but depending on how many you have will need multiple applications. You would just spray your weeds and wait 2-3 weeks and reapply to areas you think need it. You mentioned in the first comment about using something once and being done but that isn't really possible without killing everything. The weed control you pick up at a hardware store will kill hundreds of different weeds but it's unlikely to kill everything you may have. For example, the spectracide will do good killing what you see in the spring but may not be as effective for weeds that show up in the summer. I will continue to make videos as the season goes on talking about what weeds are showing up and the best ways to get rid of them but start with the ready to spray spectracide I show in this video (there are lots of other brands that will look the same, just make sure it says "for lawns or safe for lawns") and it will help get you started.

Usually whenever your soil temps get around 50-55° you are in a good window to put it down. If the soil temps are higher than that where you live don't worry about being slightly late. It's much better to be a little late than not do it at all.

The one I used this year was Lesco 0-0-7 Stonewall from Lowes. (It covers close to 15,000 sq ft) It was like $33. If that isn't available Menards has a very affordable crabgrass preventer. It is like $15 to cover 5000 Sq ft.

will weed killer harm shrubs if accidently get on them or around the base?
@OutoftheWeeds
@OutoftheWeeds 2 года назад
In general I would be very cautious around any shrubs or desirable plants. Definitely do some research regarding your specific shrubs with the specific ingredients of the herbicide. One thing I have seen recommended is to cover your plants if you are planning to spray close to them. If you Google herbicide drift there is a ton of articles about keeping your plants safe. Hope this helps and thank you for watching!
