Amazing story, however "On October 6, 1993, at the age of 44, Walters committed suicide by shooting himself in the heart in Angeles National Forest" Sorry, someone just had to say it. As I read his story, I wished for a happy ending. I was disappointed.

Sad, tragic man. But, he singlehandedly started a new sort of "sport", using relatively small helium balloons tied to a chair in order to fly. It's remarkable. And it's remarkable he got that high up and did not end up in the Pacific Ocean!

While growing up in LA, either my father or his father (I don't remember which) was one of the press photographers who "got to shoot this man with a 200-millimeter cannon" but in 1980's terminology.

Can I just say how funny your videos are, in sitting at home on a snow day, pop open RU-vid, and all of a sudden I’m watching a video a bout some fella who flew a lawn chair to 16000 FT in the air. Can I just say thank you for making these videos and bringing humor and knowledge into all of our lives.

I've known of this hero all my life, yet I never knew he actually survived! I always thought the Darwin Awards were began because of him.

And it went deeper into the story (12 minutes deeper, actually. And with audio of Larry's flight). Sorry, but he beat you, he beat you really bad. (Please forgive me. I'll keep suscribed for your next videos)

I remember when Disney/PIXAR's Up first came to theaters they advertised it on an episode of America's Funniest Home Videos by putting Tom Bergeron in a chair with helium balloons. Now I know what people actually mean when I say "have you seen Up that movie where the house lifts up by balloons?" and they say "Oh a chair!"

I actually did learn about this guy in school in a reading passage on a language arts test

"...he got to be on Late Night with David Letterman, in an ad for Timex, and eventually in a RU-vid video...." Oh, and he was also the subject of a tested myth on MythBusters. In one of the original pilot episodes, in fact.

Also worth noting - he took his own life not long after. I think he’d been that overwhelmed after the experience, we can only imagine what he went through.

Left off the ending. In 1993 he started telling friends his life felt empty after the flight. Then his 15 year relationship ended. Then, on October 6th, 1993, he hiked into the Angeles National Forest and shot himself in the heart. 😦
