David Lean's Masterpiece 'Lawrence of Arabia' will be re-released the year (2012), for it's 50th Anniversary presented in 4K. Starring Peter O'Toole, Alec Guinness & Omar Sharif I do not own any rights for this video.
I was a dedicated student in university and grad school, but the only time I played semi-hookey was the night Lawrence's 50th anniversary screening coincided with one of my evening classes. I went through half of the class and then excused myself in time to make it to the theater and get a good seat.
This sounds like something I would also do. Some things are worth seeing and I think you made a good decision. But that's probably just my personal take on films.
A movie that would cost almost a billion dollars to make, today.. With the lone exception of (maybe) 2001: A Space Odyssey, this is IMO the greatest film ever made..
Good bye Peter O'Toole. I'll watch Lawrence of Arabia one more time in your remembrance. You were one in a billion in that film Mr. O'Toole. That's how special you were. You were classy, morally good, and handsome as hell. This, in my opinion, is one of the best films of all time. The music, cinematography, and acting was supreme. But most of all Peter, I just want to see your blonde hair and blue eyes. Rest easy Mr. O'Toole. Rest easy.
Lawrence of Arabia is my all time favourite movie. I had the immense privilege of watching this master piece on the silver screen in May 2013 and I was totally blown away. I'm so deeply saddened by Sir Peter O'Toole's passing. RIP Peter. We'll never forget you.
Still the greatest.. True story, I took my much younger looking (yet older) sister to see it in 70mm, about a year ago.. I called her the next day to talk and when I asked he what was up, she said she was still trying to get the sand out of her shoes.. lol..
This film looks like it was made just yesterday. Even without the 4k resolution there's such a grand scale to this movie, and it's better that all of these sets are practical.
It's just so damn good... I watched it for the first time just a few days ago. On a VHS I bought from a charity shop for 10p. Even on that grainy video on a small screen... it just burst through. Life changing film, beautiful in every conceivable way that a movie can be. Can't wait to own this Blu Ray and show it to others. Awesome film and watching this trailer, nothing can prepare or explain how great the actual film is. Watch watch watch it! I want to watch it again now! :)
Lawrence did not give the saudi wahhabists "pride, country and honour". He did play an important role in the Arab Revolt and the establishment of the Hashemite dynasty in Trans-Jordan. But he never realized his vision of an independent Arab State. And there is no certain proof that Lawrence was gay.
Astronomical Eclips in Warfare: July 05, 1917 Thomas Edward Lawrence aka "Lawrence of Arabia" used his knowledge of astronomical phenomena to carry out a daring night raid under the darkness of a total eclipse of the Moon. While the defenders were preoccupied by the Lunar eclipse, T.E. Lawrence and his troop of fifty Bedouin successfully pressed home their attack on the city of Aqaba - Jordan. No wonder why he became such an icon of leadership.
Before there was Star Wars, Indiana Jones or Harry Potter there was Lawrence of Arabia! This was the movie that made me just stair into the big screen and dream of being a hero. This was the movie that put epic into EPIC Movies! I'm totally in line for this movie. When it comes out on blu-ray I'm in line for it. I have three copies of this movie one on VHS, DvD, and Lazer disc! I'm a fan and I am hopping it's a true blue restoration. I hope the sound will be restored as well.
africa93 It might have been fine back then, but not as cool by today’s standards. While I am willing to let Alec Guinness slide because well he’s Alec Guiness a lot of others in the past are just plain offensive like Mickey Rooney doing Asian-Face in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, or any kind of Blackface is not all cool, fun, or interesting it is just plain wrong!!
Most of the magnificent desert scenes we see on the screen were filmed in Wadi Rum which is not too far to the east and northeast of Aqaba in southern Jordan. Locate and watch the making of Lawrence of Arabia. It is probably included in the $64 dollar version of this Blu-ray release.
I don't care if a movie was presented in 6K, I would still go and see it in 35mm any day of the week, film is a beautiful thing and digital projection is just TV in a big room.
+brandon thompson Reminds me of Quentin Tarantino lol I wouldn't mind watching an 8K transfer of this film. Anything below that would be unacceptable for me personally.
That's one thing film has over digital projection. Heck I've seen Super 8 home movies that have been transfered to 4K. Seeing it in 70mm or even in 35mm projection is where you get the full experience.
One of the greatest films ever made - one of the most iconic performances ever. Never be anything to compare to Director Lean's Lawrence of Arabia and Peter O'Toole. How I love this film and him! The 1998-'89 restoration with all scenes restored was magical; how this will be I cannot imagine. I saw it as a young girl in Apr. '63 and have loved it & Peter since. Peter: There will never be another like you. You are as magnificent as the entire film itself is. Indelible perfection. I luv ya...
Michael Zaug Probably a bad idea Michael. "So, how is the war in Iraq going, George?" "We've taken Aqaba!" "Umm, the Jordanians are our allies, George!" "Whoops."
They have the military watch this film now. I don't know about then. They study T.E. Lawrence since a lot of the tactics he used during the Arab revolt set the groundwork for many modern tactics used in the middle east.

Well this is certainly good news! While I wait for this to hit the big screen here, I'll keep myself busy by watching a restored 65mm print at the local cinematheque tomorrow :)
Yeah, the problem I have with older films (1960s and below) is the sound restoration. I've seen some excellent picture restoration and resolution however the sound is always off. The music and sound effects will be perfect and the dialogue is hardly audible. Regardless, this film is a masterpiece and easily one of the top thirty greatest films ever made. Lean was one of cinema's great masters!!!
Yall are stupid or mistaken. This film isn't in 4K it's a regular 1080p Bluray. It was REMASTERED IN 4K meaning it used a new 4K transfer of the film elements. This allows a more detailed and accurate restoration before downscaling to 1080p. Also, this is a badass restoration of the film. It would be hard to find this film with similar visual and audio clarity in a 35mm or 70mm reel of film. Film ages, so picture and audio quality degrade over time. Color suffers especially badly on some prints, due to old manufacturing techniques and color methods. Even the best stored film in the best conditions will degrade eventually. Digital is forever, and this is a fine quality way to view the film even 1000 years from now. The color, fine detail, and visual depth are all superb. The original film grain is beautifully preserved, and the audio track is excellent, unlike some of the butchery jobs I've heard over the years. If you can criticize this Bluray after seeing it in person, you are blind.
"Before there was star wars, indiana jones or harry potter there was lawrence of arabia, gone with the wind and the good the bad and the ugly" would be a better those movies are the shit!
I was privilaged enough to see the digitally restored version on the big screen a couple of weeks ago and let me tell you, it was simply breathtaking! The picture quality is unbelievable, almost 3-dimensional: you can see every puff of dust under the camels' feet, the embroidery on the Bedouin costumes, the more subtle nuances of the acting that just can't be seen on TV. On the small screen Lawrence Of Arabia is merely a great film, on the big screen it's a miracle!
Regular people spoke with their disgusting pleb accents. These distinguished fellows trained themselves to speak very well. Most plebs back in the 60s had no way of recording their voices so we are left with practically only the best examples of spoken English from that era.
This was one of the movies that when I at last finally saw it I was for one wishing it was on the big screen instead of a tiny TV and made me feel like a little kid when I first saw movies: unbelieving of what I was seeing before me, as if I was seeing a magic trick that was impossible to accomplish
Okay so I've never seen this movie (I know, shoot me), but wow what a job on the restoration! Technology combined with Amazing people result's in some HOLY MOTHER OF CHRIST results.
At least make the trailer available in 4k as well if it's going to show off the new restoration. Defeats the purpose otherwise, imho. EDIT nvm, was uploaded on youtube before such a feat became possible.
Gives me chills just to watch this trailer. Looks so magnificent. I'm still kicking myself for not reading my brother's message to me properly. I thought he was sending a story to me only about the 50th anniversary making of the film. I didn't realize they were re-releasing it. I don't know if I'll be around in 2062 for the 100th. I'll be 95! :(
Desde que vi esta película supe que mi paradigma era ser como el Teniente Lawrence. ¿La razón? Demostrarle al mundo que sí es posible escapar del encasillamiento, pues "nada está escrito".
our contemporary to Lawrence is Charlie Wilson, who covertly obtained CIA money to arm the Afghan rebels with Stingers to defeat the mighty Soviet Union in the 1980s. The parallels between them are stunning. Read the book "Charlie Wilson's War" and also "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" by T.E. Lawrence. Lawrence was a very brilliant man and the book is great for its history and insights. Lawrence and Wilson both helped tribal people fight against organized armies, amazing stories.
So your a fan? LOL, first time I watched it I was flying over Saudi Arabia and I thought to my self it would be funny to watch this film while flying over the country. Turns out it was epic.
