MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell details the many “systemic failures” that a Texas House committee report finds contributed to the mass shooting in Uvalde, but he says the single “decisive factor in this mass murder” that prevented 376 heavily armed officers from confronting the gunman for 77 minutes was his AR-15 weapon.

This problem has so many facets. The mental health of the shooter. The awareness of their friends and family. The precautions and preparations of the school. The choices of the politicians. The policies of the gun store. The weapons available for purchase. If we don't address all these things, it will just keep happening. We have more school shootings each year than the other 9 top countries combined, with a mass shooting averaging every 10 days or so. There's a saying: "The criminal must have the means, motive and opportunity. Disrupt any of these, and the crime will not happen". Why are humans so violent? Why do we have so much apathy? Why do we have so much ego? The part of the brain responsible for self control is the hippocampus. This region does not fully develop until about age 25. Do we limit gun sales until 25 years old? If so, how can a black woman protect herself at night when she's walking to her car after work? God this is such a complicated problem. But 1 thing is crystal clear. Whether for self defense, hunting, or training your family how to handle a weapon, there's no reason to own an AR15. If you look at how much it would take to shoot a bear, for example, I've seen reports of up to 13 rounds. Which is a lot. So is there any reason to sell a magazine that can hold more than 16 or so bullets? Is there any reason to sell more than 16 bullets a year? Imagine how long it would have taken this shooter to save up enough bullets to do this attack. The problem is that to effect real change, the audience must not only care, but be on your side with what you propose. We need a comprehensive solution that not only works, but everyone involved (dems, reps, civilians, cops, etc) would be on board with. That not only protect life, but also protect freedoms. Short of that, we will see another shooting in the next couple weeks.

The crazy thing is that this was because they were all cops in Texas. If they had been ordinary citizens, at least a few of those would have been ' good guys with guns'. It seems, all Texas cops are 'bad guys with guns'. Insane! Even worse, one cop in the footage was using his cell phone with a 'punisher' logo on it. People were wondering why he was goofing on his phone rather than going forward and face off with the gunman. Mr Punisher and his colleagues did nothing for 45 or even 90 minutes. Later on, it turned out that Mr Punisher was frantically trying to call his girlfriend, who was a teacher in that very school. She was shot and died... His very own girlfriend was killed or being killed and he did nothing. Because. he was a cop following trash orders. If Mr Punisher had ignored his orders he may not have been able to save his GF, but at least some kids that were bleeding out. Anf afterwards, he was being ridiculed for being a coward, while he had to bury his GF. Insane! But that is Abbot's Texas for you in 2022.

If they didn't understand from the get-go that they could face this kind of threat then they're in the wrong line of work. Presumably they were all trained and had varying degrees of experience. But it's beyond infuriating that when it counted most, with all those young lives at stake, they choked. Where it's normal to establish a chain of command they had none. Orders were apparently given, and followed, but with no one now prepared to take responsibility. Chief Arredondo figured stepping away from the city council would get him off the hook but it's pretty clear that the citizens and, most particularly, the victims families won't be satisfied until he's stripped of any any position of authority in that town. And rightly so.

Not quite. The kid apparently had red flags all over him, but literally no one did anything. Why not? And how many fly under the radar like this? These issues need to be adressed too. I am pretty sure that in my nation the kid would have been flagged by teachers (parents probably too) to get him mental health care.

In Las Vegas years ago we had 2 cops killed while seated having lunch in a restaurant. The married couple then moved on to a Walmart where they shot repeated people and a good guy with the gun was set to take out the man. Unfortunately he didn't see that the wife had seen him and she shot him dead. I can't believe well... I guess I can believe, that they think that since this last situation worked out, that is something that can happen all the time. My son owns an AR15 and he has told me that he would gladly he turned it in if there's a buy back if they decided to ban the weapon. He says the people's lives are more important than him having those types of guns.

I know someone in my community who says he owns an AR15. Gets excited when he talks about target practice saying”IT’S FUN TO FIRE”. So someone can have “fun” Dangerous people with intent to cause mass murder have “access” to buy this weapon. It should be banned from public purchase. Our forefathers who wrote the second amendment could not have imagined what that amendment had done to the safety( or lack of) to these children.

Texas Law enforcement organizations need to get together and push for banning assault weapons. it's very obvious that all those cops were afraid to go in because they fear the carnage that those assault weapons will cause!!!!!

The reason you've never seen a coverup like this before is because it involves cops. Cops are always protected from accountability, aside from a few sacrificial lambs. There were 367 cops who stood by while children were murdered. Facing up to this is facing up to cop culture, which emphasizes officer safety over citizens' lives (and the Supreme Court backs them up on that). You seriously think anyone in this country--especially TEXAS?--is going to face the fact that what caused those cops to hang back while kids were slaughtered is their training and culture? And that training and culture is everywhere in this country? There will be no accountability, no acknowledgement of the truth, and no peace for that community. Or for any of us. The police have broken the trust we citizens placed in them again and again. They won't fix it. We have to. If we don't, this will happen again.

The shooter spent $5000 on weapons and ammo (more if you count 60 mags), no gun shop is going to stop that sale unless we can make gun shops/manufacturers liable. Today, they go about their business, selling the next rifle to the next killer because they face no consequences and the money is too good.

These news reports really make me want go up to heaven myself and pass away to see and hug these little children who could have been a high school graduate one day just like me graduating on June 3rd with the class of 2022 but I can’t really take my own life away to see these angels because I am only 19 and I still have many years ahead of me and a lot of people are proud of me right now for graduating at the top 50 of my class and going to college in August to study Computer Science.I would have had the courage to take down the gun man myself if I could that day instead of those corrupt officers.I feel like trash and it’s not fair I still get to be alive while these children didn’t get to grow.
