Lawrence: What did Mrs. Alito mean when invoking being German to those who come after her? 

My heritage is German and I don't feel the way Ms. Alito feels. Her statement is insulting to German descendants.😮

I'm German, my family were War Refugees after WWII. Being German does NOT excuse her arrogance or her poor behavior.

As a German I am truly offended by this claim. She may have German heritage, however she is NOT German. Neither does she understand that modern Germans have changed and are very, very different from 'those' Germans back then. The wife of a supreme court justice who did something like this in Germany would get her husband under immediate and very detailed scrutiny. Especially when that supreme court justice has already influenced several rulings towards a more suppressive legal system. This is shameful. Mrs. Alito is a very scary individual . Evoking German heritage when talking about targeting a certain group of individuals is mind numbingly stupid or entitled arrogance. Either is despicable as you are evoking the atrocities Germans committed against the Jews and others during WW2. A code of ethics is a good place to start but term limits and restructuring of the Supreme Court should be next. Corruption and religious fervour are never a good mix.

Martha's maiden name is Bomgardner, but she was born in Kentucky. Threatening people with being German is an insult to those actually born and/or living in Germany. She would not be allowed to reside in that country for very long, being a total loon who makes flags in her mind.

4:20 Speaking of ethics, why are Supreme Court justices allowed to accept such large "gifts" like vacations on yachts? I've had government jobs and we weren't supposed to accept tips or gifts of any real value.

My last name is German. I am proud of my German heritage. Why? Because my family of German immigrants who came to America in the early 1800's fought against their own motherland to preserve the freedoms they had come to love and cherish in America. My grandfather and his brother, my great uncle, went to war in Europe to fight fascism and preserve democracy. My great uncle passed in 2001. I'm so grateful he never lived to see America as it is today. My grandfather, however, managed to survive until 2021. He HATED Trump with a passion, calling him the worst things you can imagine, and never disagreeing when I referred to Trump as a fascist. We have to stop this madness. Now and forever. The people who fear a global society are the enemies of humanity. We all have to learn to live together or we will all die. There is no other choice. UNITE OR DIE.

I am German and I am deeply dismayed and ashamed by Mrs. Alito's statement. I am 61 years old. All the years of my life that I have studied the historical guilt of Germans for all the suffering that Germans brought into the world during World War II, I have wondered how it could happen that a majority of Germans could vote for and then support a fascist system. Today, when I look to America, I have the impression that I can find answers to my questions there, but this frightens me deeply. I would therefore like to strongly disagree with Mrs. Alito! I think that the majority of Germans currently living in Germany would neither think nor identify with the phrase "if you come after me, I’m gonna give it back to you". However, the outcome of the European elections and the alarming performance of extreme right-wing parties has now made me at least doubt this assessment. That is why it is very important to me, especially as a German, to point out and remind everyone where the ideas contained in Mrs. Alito's statement took the world almost 100 years ago. Hitler had the idea of "Make Germany great again". Where this idea led Germany and the rest of the world is well known. My hope is that America realizes how great the American idea is and that this idea does not need to be make great again. The present Amerika is great! It doesn't have to be made great again!

I visited Berlin for the first time last fall and was almost shocked how much public space that is dedicated to what I interpreted as apologies for the holocaust and other war crimes. Parks, monuments, displays, museums, at least in the city center it was ever present. And I don't think it's just to inform tourists like me, it's there to constantly remind Germans of their past.

I am a German-American who had parents, who were German born and became American citizens in 1960. I have a German husband and live in Germany for over 40 years. I am proud of both my German and American heritage. Having said that, I can only express my absolute disgust in Mrs. Alito’s remarks. Her behavior has nothing to do with her German heritage, but rather with being morally corrupt! If that is how she acted when confronting her neighbors, then the name she was called, was probably justified. Yes, can’t understand normal thinking!

As a German, I am deeply offended by Mrs Alito's words. I'm ashamed of what the generations of my grandparents and parents did. And though I see no personal guilt as I was born 20 years after the end of WW2 I feel the responsibility to try to prevent any repetition of it. I see so many parallels between the politics of the Weimar Republic (1919-1933) and the US politics of recent years including a populist right-wing party leader that it is more than frightening. Remember, though Hitler wasn't elected with a majority of the popular vote he was appointed chancellor. Within months he used all of his rights as the chancellor to eliminate all opposition and was given even more rights because of the "disastrous situation of the country". Sounds familiar, right? And when President Hindenburg died Hitler assumed his position and unified President and Chancellor into "Führer" (leader). He let every military person swear loyalty to his person - not to Germany, not to the government, not to his position/title within the government - that's why the military was so reluctant to turn against him when the writing was on the wall. No democracy is safe without enough democrats (people who support the system of democracy which is not necessarily the same as being a member of the blue party) who fight for democracy. That's why I fear for you America.

I am German through both parents, born a few months before the end of WWII. My dad served in the Navy in WWII and was proud to serve his newly adopted country. My son and three of my four grandchildren proudly served our country with honor. The women in my family raised children who have no criminal, alcohol or drug issues. We are honored to be part of our society and repay our the invaluable freedoms we have by our ways of living. I am a retired civil litigator and was never impeded in Any way by regard for the law and the canons of ethics. The Alito family demonstrates the result when there is no ability in its members to respect the benefits given to them by the modest restraints of the law and the Canons of Ethics every other judge and lawyer mets.

Mrs alito needs a life and to get over her pathetic self. Alito should retire and get his wife some help.

I am a former American citizen and have been a proud German citizen since 2018 and I can assure you that Germans do not have more to be ashamed of than Americans. Germans are ashamed of and very conscious of their history, especially 1933-1945. They learn about this period very intensely during their school years and fully understand the dangers of ever allowing it to happen again. But Americans, remember I was born American and became a German citizen at the age of 52, Americans gloss over, white wash if you will, all of the atrocities committed against the Native Americans as well as African-Americans. As a German citizen, I am just as embarrassed about Mrs. Alito claiming to be German as I am about anything either country did in the past.

I love this so much; thank you for that commentary. I was born in the Netherlands in 1952 but my parents had to endure 5 years of german occupation. One uncle was sent to germany as a slave labour. He survived but many did not. My parents emigrated to Canada in 1953. Even today I find it very difficult to even hear spoken german because I was deprived of my heritage.

I think I know why Alito's wife chooses the Italian word for "shame", rather than the German one. The German word for "shame" is "Scham". So she probably does not want to raise a flag that says "Scham" over the Alito property. A pity. That would be a good flag to fly over the Supreme Court building.

James Madison, who was a founder and who assisted in formulating our Constitution wrote: "The separation of church and state is to keep forever from these shores the ceaseless strife that has soaked the soil of Europe for centuries". This is a major precept of our US nation and society. Mrs. Alito, Judge Alito don't seem to honor this most basic tenent of the Constitution.

I realized that the secret to making a million is saving for a better investment. I always tell myself you don't need that new Maserati or that vacation just yet.
