I get asked a lot about whether being a practicing attorney is like being a lawyer on TV. I love watching legal movies and courtroom dramas. It's one of the reasons I decided to become a lawyer. But sometimes they make me want to pull my hair out because they are ridiculous.
Today I'm taking a break from representing clients and teaching law students how to kick ass in law school to take on lawyers in the movies and on TV. While all legal movies and shows take dramatic license to make things more interesting (nobody wants to see hundreds of hours of brief writing), many of them have a grain of truth.

As the child of a lawyer... The jokes didn't lie. (Okay, but like on another note, my dad always got really upset if you called him a shark? He hated lawyers being called bloodsuckers, sharks, ect, like. He would argue to no end with you if you called him that. Assuming that that's the same for all lawyers, that's probably why lawyers only have lawyer friends. I've typed lawyer way too often, it does not have any meaning anymore.)

@@feelinghypothermic you cast fireball on a creature that's only 7ft away the spell sphere has a 40ft in diameter you're definitely in the fireball roll 8d6 for damage, also make a DEX save I'm gonna guess with disadvantage since you were surprised, take full damage on failed save and half on a success, likely a min DC of 14 (most people put at least 16 so a +4 into they're best stat plus the proficiency bonus of +2 and because it's the spell DC +8)

@@ninjeff It's actually her first time DMing. We all met over our exchange University's international program during quarantine and have gotten quite close since, so we decided to try all the things we've never done. Most of those things just so happen to involve various amounts of alcohol, but we're also learning regional cooking, each others' languages, and we play a bunch of (drinking)games. We started out online, but now we're mostly hanging in person. We all wanted to try D&D, but most were afraid of being laughed straight out of the room, so now we're excited to do it in a safe environment. Because life is just too short for stigma and shit. I think we've got two guys that have already dabbled with D&D in our group, and the rest of us are totally new to it. The girl who's DMing has played a bunch of campaigns wit her friends back home, and she's excited to create her own. So I'm confident it's going to be awesome, even if we all just straight up die right in the beginning.

We used to get doorstepped by Jehovah's Witlesses when I was at school. They opened a Kingdom Hall just down the road. Such a shame about the landmine ban. At least the Mormons when I met them looked more like MiB, which was way cooler. If they tried the same thing again they should realise my IBS has not just made my bowels irritable and I doubt my axe and their inability to accept blood transfusions would be a good mix. Really enjoyed this one. When Eve mentions being in an argument and then later coming up with that perfect come-back, there's a French term for it. It's called l'esprit de l'escalier, which basically translates to "staircase wit", as in coming up with that witty comment after you've already reached the bottom of the stairs. I'm kinda sad that French isn't used more often in legalese.

Pro tip: Even though that transition to the sponsor was smooth af and it was pretty obvious that it was a sponsor. This video could get banned in a country like Australia where it must be abundantly clear to the viewer when something is, or is not sponsored. Small text on the video or simply saying; "This episode was sponsored by; Mack Weldon." Would do. Or saying; "This video was sponsored by me." The ACCC in Australia is really strong on advertising law.

In the first four seconds of the video he says, "Thanks to Mack Weldon for keeping Legal Eagle in the air and helping me look fly." Is that not clearly saying that they are sponsoring the video? To me, that phrasing very clearly shows that they are sponsoring the video. Or do you specifically need to have text over the portion of the video that is an ad saying that it is?

Musical Mark Depends. He could just be saying thank you and then *separately* engage in the sponsorship without specifying it is one. Weird distinction though, and OP is right that it’s pretty obvious it’s a sponsorship to anyone watching. His transitions/segues are just so smooth that if you’re not paying enough attention it can definitely catch you off-guard.

@@baydiac Exactly; it must be clear to all viewers if something is a paid advertisement or not. If someone isn't paying full attention they might not notice that the ad began. Children watching may not notice and neither might people that skipped the start... There is no law saying that there needs to be a water mark or you need to say; "this video is sponsored." But it is good practice. Because in a country like Australia or the UK where consumer Law watchdogs are super strong they could attempt to put down videos that aren't abundantly clear if something's an ad. All that being said I'm pretty sure the worst that could happen is a video take down and the advertiser gets a strike. (It's the responsibility of the company that paid for the ad to make sure it's up to standards) In the UK their consumer watchdogs cracked down pretty hard on people selling British/EU products on RU-vid. And recently it in Australia there's been a little controversy over companies and influencers not fully disclosing if something is a paid ad. LinusTechTips holds the gold standard for a RU-vidr that can transition into an ad. If you want to see it done 100% perfectly I'd go to his channel and skip to the end of any video.

Yeah, the thing is, not all European countries have free tuition. Spain certainly doesn't. The difference is, our tuition fees aren't in the tens of thousands per year. Keep in mind, though, that living arrangements can be exorbitantly expensive and that our incomes are also significantly lower than in the US. There's always a trade-off.

11:00 I'm ashamed to say I think the trend started here in Australia. I remember our shelves being stripped bare for about a week or 2 before the first reports out of the US. Good thing is now we've got our infection rates under control all the hoarding has stopped - bad thing is it turns out the hoarding was the only thing consumers were spending on and now that it's stopped our economy has gone off the cliff.

Honestly, there may be some silver linings to the whole quarantine thing. Like you said about realizing where the price of lawyers comes from and now doing most of it online far cheaper; I'm a gamer and I've realized a dramatic shift in alot of gaming communities from memes and trash talking to actual legitimate socializing to make up for quarantine isolation. There may be other things too, it's like people are realizing the legitimate uses of various platforms and technology now and gaining a new appreciation for many things. Does it balance out the huge losses from the virus? Maybe not. But every cloud has a silver lining, and we may emerge from this as a better population overall.

About toilet paper shortage: it's not hoarders. It's people not using the bathroom at work, which used to account for almost half of all toilet paper used and now counts for basically 0%, leaving the domestic toilet paper factories to almost double their production from 60% to 100% of the total demand, which they can't do. Commercial toilet paper and domestic are very different products, with their own factories and whatnot.

This is how inelastic our supply chain has become. The plus side of a capitalistic economy is that it is elastic, quick to respond to disasters, but this makes it inefficient, wasteful. A planned economy is less wasteful but slower to respond to unexpected changes. Modern economies basically have capitalism for the consumer, but planned within the corporate supply lines, or basically the worst of both worlds for the average person.

In re: toilet paper shortages. I know a couple who are retired in southern Spain. They tell me that they are not experiencing any kind of toilet paper shortages or difficulties - but finding canned tomatoes and garlic is nearly impossible. Go figure.

during the 1st 5 weeks it was similar in Australia, shortages were for quite a few things toilet paper and hand sanitiser everyone has these i think, we also had weeks with no pasta, rice, canned tomatoes/pasta sauce on the shelves and limits of no more than 1 of any item on 1 list and no more than 2 of items on a different list depending on supply. we even ran out of supermarket home delivery space here multiple times with orders on a 6+day waiting list for delivery space as for garlic, it got around that garlict could help and so you couldn't find that on shelves also for quite a while
